Throwing points away in injury time

It cheers me up no end that people are arguing about fitness levels and squad depth and injuries.
It means the fan base still cares, despite the many shit-shows this season!
The root of the problems of struggling for the last 20 mins of games especially when we are leading all comes down to squad depth and injuries.
We need significantly more "athletic" bodies to pick from on the bench if we ever get back up. That needs to be the learning from this season.
Graft and a sprinkling of ability this season has got us to the end game with something to protect on many occasions. Having to utilise a massively inferior bench has been our downfall.

Whilst fitness is an issue, it’s not that simple though is it.

It’s an injury hit squad playing 100+ minutes chasing shadows, every single week.

We’ve also bobbins options from the bench, so even when we sun a flagging player, the quality coming on is just not there. This compounds the matter.

Elite level fitness isn’t something that can be changed overnight either. So blaming Wilder is a nonsense.
We should only be playing players that are ex-SAS/SBS

A few teams were wanting shorter games not long back. Was it 30 or 40 each way? Keep up with this amount of injury time and I reckon more teams will want them too.

Time for clocks like rugby.

At least then there's no question marks.

How many times do you see the referee blow up at odd times (ie 95 mins and 37 seconds).

Through in a former PL ref saying continuing to play after time if a team looks like scoring is the right thing to do!

Mentality too big part. Also the reaction of our fans when hearing the 14 minutes (understandable) was a boo/moan which is a negative reaction and the players hear it…Fulham’s too, who’s fans were no doubt - come on let’s have em!

I don't disagree with you on that one, but I'm sure there'd still be some who would have a cry at yesterday's game saying "it's been 45 minutes since kick off and the clock says 75:xx it's not fair and rigged against dem blayuhds

The game ends when it goes out of play in rugby if it's gone past 80 on the clock.

the more i think the more i think its the defense thats cost us this season. because despite everything we've looked ok going forward against the teams weve needed to, but weve chucked away so points from the defence switching off or falling apart. you think of luton 2-1 Bournemouth 2-0 Fulham 3-1 & all of a sudden we are where luton are level on pts with forest

Long term Injuries to Bash, Eags, RND, Lowe, Baldock, have ravaged our defence all season.

Yep, this is a case of where our injuries have played a big part in our season. We managed to ride it out last season but you can't do that in the PL.

I am puzzled that two independent investigations have not unearthed anything. Even getting a desso pitch at the training ground has made fuck all difference.

Think we have to look at a few things.

But mainly we aren’t fit enough for this division and don’t seem to have any leaders. When we concede one we look like we will concede in the next few attacks on our goal.

We don’t keep possession well enough to slow the game down properly and end up camped in our own half.

Things that can be fixed.

Bettis intimated in his interview on RS that the Desso being harder than natural grass pitches has likely contributed to injuries, and will do until players "get used" to how to play on it... I think there's truth in this but it's like the emperor's new clothes. Nobody dare say it!

It is strange just how many injuries all teams are having this season there’s always 1 or 2 teams with injuries every year. But the whole league has been full of them.

Yet the old normal pitch was too fucked and caused injuries.

We're horrible to watch at the back. No organisation, nobody attacking the ball, nobody closing down, Purley hoping that the bloke shooting at goal misses.

They just seem to grow roots and freeze

Not sure whether there's some sort of hangover from Hudson's methods or whether any new ones have come their way that aren't working either because if this team had ANY sort of idea how to defend, we wouldn't be in the mess we're in, we'd be right in the mix for survival.

That added to the wasted money on the likes of Larouci, Thomas and Trusty who has flattered to deceive at this level.

Huge shame because attack-wise we have some decent players who are being let down by the clowns at the back as well as Souza and Norwood.

Any normal football team with anything about it should be able to close a game out with a 2 goal lead against the more average teams at this level. 2 points dropped against Fulham, 2 points dropped against Bournemouth, 3 points dropped at home to Luton from a winning position, same at Spurs earlier in the season.

We could easily be 10 points better off if this lot had it mentally between their ears not to panic, to be organised and communicate.

The experiment of appointing mardy arse as captain didn’t help. Not exactly Mr Personality and more Corporal Jones than Captain Mainwaring. Never thought I’d miss John “It’s over me” Egan.

With our transfer budget being so low we needed every signing to work out and have a lot of luck with injuries. We got neither.

When you put it like that, it’s almost our first choice back 5 other than Bash. No wonder it’s been loose.

There isn’t competition for places that much as a result either.

The keeper situation is a bit odd but it seems Wes has made his bed so it’s Grbic all the way now.

Osborn cares and as a result you know he tried his best. No chance Larouci gets picked on merit.

Baldock is having a bad period with injuries so come rain or shine, Bogle will get a game.

Regardless of how bad Anel has been, Trusty looks low on confidence so he’ll play regardless as will Holgate. Obviously no issue with Robbo.

Hamer will nearly always play because he’s one of few who can take dead balls and score from midfield.

Souza is the only one with any size about him so realistically he’s getting picked most games.

There has been a bit of competition for the third option though I can see Arblaster with perhaps Brooks getting a bit of game time and Norwood the odd minutes with Davies out for a bit but it’s largely Arblaster’s shirt.

If fit, McBurnie starts. It’s only if he’s not fit that he won’t and Brewster, Archer and co can’t get fit so little change there and Osula is way off being a regular starter at this level.

Maybe McAtee might have rivaled Brereton-Diaz at one point but his goal scoring has been phenomenal and I can’t see us playing 3-4-3 with just two central Midfielders any time soon.

So all in all, you’ve got perhaps one spot in midfield that Arblaster is about to nail and the rest all walk in right now because their understudies are so far off it.

Not a particularly healthy scenario to be in really.

How many points have we chucked away this season in the last 5 mins of of normal time and then the added time.....................answer TOO FUCKIN MANY.

It's down to the players why we can't hold out, nothing to do with added time, Saturday we were 3-1 up shouldn't have needed the 4th goal, even though it proved vital in the end, poor coaching is a factor ,but they are experienced enough to be able to handle it, or just not good enough

Christ how long were you thinking about this?
now ive got time to give a serious answer. in that everyone wrote this season off in august & with somewhat good reason & we had some humiliating defeats. but despite all thats happened on & off the pitch. it didnt take much, bit more game management, bit more solidity, & we couldve survived relegation here

as someone else pointed out for all the tonkings we've taken. we hold out at 2-0 & 3-1 in the last 2 games. we are 3pts off safety. & that doesnt include spurs villa luton palace. points we have thrown away even if we take 7pts not 1 pt out of them 4. we are up in 16th 4pts clear of the drop for all our hammerings

If we're limiting the opposition to shots at goal from the length Fulham scored their second from, that's generally a good result?

People seem to forget they add time on for goal celebrations (7) and substitutions (8) and then there was VAR (2) plus injury times. Someone on the forum calculated that the VARs took 8 minutes. So maybe 14 minutes was a bit short!
Gillingham away facup 3rd round 2nd half 2 goals 5 different subs, 4 mins et 🤷🤷

In many foreign leagues that would be blown for full time dead on ninety minutes as the result is decided. It is likely the referee gave as little as he could do without doing exactly that
