I think that before '78 we finished no lower than 12th in what is now the championship?

That is correct, previous lowest position was 11th in 1934/35, 1951-52 (despite winning 7-3 and 3-1 against Wednesday who went up as champions) and 1976-77. The other seasons we finished lower than 6th in the 2nd tier were 9th in 1968-69, 8th in 1950-51 and 7th in 1936/37 and 1956/57

You could probably come up with similar stats for a lot of clubs and that the long terms trends are caused as much by the economic shifts as by actions or inactions of boards.

Actually I don't think KM would regard his tenure a success, and would rue how few bright spots there have been.

Rather than speculate exactly how much cash he has lost, let's just say he has given away half of whatever value he might have recovered even if we do ever return to the Prem, so he has lost tens of millions come what may I suppose that's one measure of failure. He is also despised by so many of our fans, not a warm feeling I'm sure.

Of all our series of owners over the years he's the one for whom I have the greatest respect and would die a happy man if only both he and I see us back in the top flight. Any such success would presumably be under total Saudi ownership, but it would be KM' s legacy and the man deserves it for trying so hard.

I think you are correct, KM would not regard his tenure as a success - although he and the club (ALL of the club) were badly let down by the Premier League. We may have got relegated the next season or the one after but McCabe and his manager Warnock should not have been relegated how we were. KM has tried and I am sure with hindsight would have done certain things differently. KM, unfortunately put others in charge and was badly let down. Yes, he takes his share of the blame, but there are extremely few who would have the balls to even take on the top job - forever there to be shot at.

Even though the post got a bit streaky, well done to all for not reverting to pathetic sarcasm and insults.

We all have differing opinions, and I know it's been said many times before "We're all Blades aren't we?"

As for the future? - we ARE going in the right direction, but Rome wasn't built in a day - you just need to hang around a bit longer!!
