Tell you what, any kit manufacturer would play an absolute blinder and would endear themselves to the fans if they did a 'build your own' vote, especially with the home kit. Yeah, it's nuanced and there'd be preferences here and there, but they could get something that works for the majority:
  • Striped back or not
  • Width of stripes
  • Number of stripes on front
  • Shade of red
  • Stripes over shoulders or not
  • Stripes on sleeves or not
  • Black stripes or not
  • Red stripe in centre or not
  • Collar type
  • Colour of socks

Ignore the old style baggy tailoring. But i'm gonna go against the grain here. Stripey sleeves aren't always better.

I'd say of the "modern" kits e.g. last 30 years. These are two of the best style sleeves we've had:

As Muttley (Dick Dastardly's dog not the poster on here) and Eternal used to say... "YEAH, YEAH, YEAH, YEAH..!"
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think it's great to be honest.

Like the red socks (I remember counting all the seasons of red/black/white socks, and I can't remember the numbers but I don't think red wasn't last, so it's fine)

Like the stripes on the front, like the cuffs, like the collar, just need the back to have stripes.

Some of you lot ought to just stop looking and buy a Shoreham Street Magnifique replica I think and save the pain.

The photo is washed out, it'll be more red irl, it's taken with a proper camera so it gets colour graded in lightroom or whatever.

I think it’s redeemable if it’s stripes on the back. Even if not it’s not disastrous, though I think it’s a step down from this season’s reasonable kit.
I'm hopeful there are stripes on the back looking at the red stripe under Didsy's arm that looks to be more towards the back

Problem is that you’d then get fans complaining that every kit is the same year after year.

That's it for me, mate - too much white across the the top. It looks awful. Chuck that together with red socks, and we're Southampton. Drop the white across the top, replace it with continued stripes and it's oreyt.

Otherwise, we're this:

Your profile picture has too much white across the top 😉

Very true, don't disagree - I was thinking of a one year only kinda thing.

I seem to remember the 96/97 home kit was put to a vote and that is probably one of the few universally rated kits of the past 25 years so there is definitely something in the idea.

The thing is some “classic” shirts need to be a bit outside the box. I wonder what the initial reaction to the 89 luminous shirt was?

Remember walking up the Moor and seeing someone wearing it on a sunny day in late July or August and been blown away and heading to Suggs not long after.
Though in the brochure sent out by the club the pictures were taken in the shade of the South Stand and it looked just like a normal yellow shirt.
