The World Cup

A lot of players turned up today. Gordon played well - which i didnt expect. Bellingham was running show. Even konsa and pickford had decent games.

The subs came on when down to 10 did well. I think the world media buzz around mexico and the record (which is only against shit teams) and the altitude, along side people wanting mexico to win had spured out players on.

Expected the worse when we shifted to back 5 and decided to just defend from 75th min. Brave move bur it worked out, if we conceded we would have ended up losing.

I thought he may have put someone like watkins on for kane when tactics changed, bit of pace for any out balls or pace to close them down but credit where credit is due.

Mate I'm just reading some of the comments and am baffled.

He's left us, played consistently for a top half premier league team and is in World Cup quarter final - yet gets sniped at for essentially being good on the ball and retaining possession. Utterly bizarre. Best midfielder we've had in decades and we wasted him.
Not once did he give the ball away for them to break quickly. Played to instructions,he can knock it 30 yards to feet no problem, but that’s not good enough for our ‘gerrit forward’ numbskulls.

Di
These lucky bastards will win it, won't they, with all the top teams going out? Will be the most boring side to so since France in 98, if they do.
Disagree...You need more than luck to win a world cup...top teams are still there..France Spain Argentina.

your making a reight fool of thi sen the blokes a top player and we never appreciated it or used him correctly
The Norwegian manager was correct when he advised him that we were the wrong club
Sander just orchestrated a quality team performance and deservedly dumped Brazil
I never said he wasn't a top player, and I enjoyed watching him when he was with us. I was just commenting on the fact he stopped every time he received the ball ( obviously under tactical instruction), seems a bit of a waste of his talents

Imagine if they'd equalised and we'd taken Kane off for ET and pens. Gutsy move that

Best England game and result since the Owen/Beckham era and the wins against Germany and Argentina. It had everything, there's a generation of kids that will remember that their whole lives, stayed up late, battled, in game penalties, quality goals, red card, the Azteca, the delay, the atmosphere, it had the lot. Phenomenal stuff.

I think this is one of our greatest strengths, this time. Tuchell has the skill and confidence to change things, in-game, to tactically effect the game and swing things in our favour.

Wonder if starmer will call infantino and tell him quansah should have his red card suspended or call trump and get him to tell him.
only one man can influence Trump; time to do his bit for the country:

I don't think we win that under southgate
Think the same personally, we’d have crumbled after the sending off. When people mention an elite manager making decisions to influence games, last night is a prime example. Get in front, change the formation and see the game out. Quality result.

Excellent battling performance under dire circumstances. It reminded me of the crucial 0-0 in Rome. Very clinical on the counter. Can remember five excellent counters. Scored two, decent chance for Gordon. Won a penalty. Hit the post. Good going really.

Just caught up with the highlights, some win! Bellingham looked like he was outstanding.

Fantastic result.

We’d managed the game well 1st half but looked ropey on set pieces and got punished.

Quansah was a red and a stupid challenge.

Penalty just emphasised why I hate VAR. By the most stringent interpretation of the rules it’s probably a foul but when I go to play 5 aside tonight that will be literally every other challenge.

Crucially it’s also not gonna be given as a free kick anywhere else on the pitch, it’s so innocuous. The role of VAR here seems to be “can we possibly give something here to justify its existence and inject some false jeopardy”.

Even if you agree it’s a foul then there is still the inconsistency of how it’s applied. The ref saw the incident and waved play on. It does not meet the threshold for “clear and obvious” in any way. It’s at the whim of the VAR team and whoever else gives them their orders as to what gets overturned.

Fantastic backs to the wall performance to see it out. I can’t think of a braver England performance in my lifetime. Mexico are a middling team but that was some situation England walked into and they handled it superbly.

Norway will be a stern test but those players have shown they are capable. I think we can get to the final but Spain or France will probably have too much for us…..but get there and who knows….maybe we’ll get a VAR stitch up go our way for once.

Woke up at 6:30 to watch it on catch up with the kids…..who were unfortunately not that interested. Should have just gone to the boozer when I had the chance.

Watched it all live... i cant remember an England game with that much happening in it...it had me shouting screaming cursing and at the end relieved it had finished.

Absolutely, I had a feeling that it would be a good game, given the conditions etc. I had it as 50/50, but I didn't think it's be so eventful. Brilliant and really, what the World Cup is all about. You hope for games that rise above and become a spectacle and that one had everything.

And the moral is... Always go to the boozer when you have the chance!
In terms of reaching the final, there's also the small hurdle of (probably) Argentina to get over.

According to the after match discussion on the BBC coverage, that wording is no longer in use. I don't know what that means, but for some reason, it's not used anymore.

They've had an easier WC than us so far. Messi is incredible, but they're not the team they once were. Much like Brazil, they're not to be feared IMO.

It had a siege mentality about it from the first minute. England managing the crowd, drawing fouls to break any momentum. Smash and grab two goals. Mexico getting one back quickly before half time.
The red card changed the game, but somehow we got a pen on the break.

Mexico getting their pen could’ve been cause for England to collapse, but we absolutely defended like our lives depended on it. Every clearance or Pickford save cheered on.

It reminded me of Englands qualifier for France 98. 0-0 in Rome against Italy in 97. Paul Ince bloodied.

I agree with most of your comments and I think Quansah's challenge was stupid but in my eyes more a reddish yellow which was made to look red in a slow motion replay. I think the reviews should be done primarily with replays at normal speed - however I do find it surprising how many toes are stamped on without it being obvious at normal speed

I thought both players were trying to kick the ball and actually kicked each other and if it had to be a foul it could have been given either way.

I'm glad I watched the game live. It must have been a challenge to watch the full match replay or highlights without inadvertently hearing the result. I went to bed after the squeaky Harry Kane interview and looking through the curtains thought I'd left my outside light on - then realised it was dawn breaking. Can't remember the last time I went to bed so late 😀

What do they use now then? It’s never really been used properly as they just recheck and make a decision with fresh eyes

Thought Quansah was a tad unlucky as his foot came up off the top of the ball.

I'm not sure, it was said by the host as a correction to Rooney/Richards/Hart saying 'it's not clear annd obvious', the host then said 'that's not in the wording anymore' or words to that effect.
