IMO the current United team is an example of this and there are benefits. Critically, there are no outstanding performers likely to be snapped up by higher league clubs during the course of the season. Good business from Wilder getting rid of Adams (bad egg anyway) and Calvert Lewin early doors as well, to avoid disruption at a later stage. By comparison, think back to the Deane/Agana years when we won back to back promotions. That would never happen today because of the massive sums of money in both the PL and Championship. Come January, we would never have been able to refuse a ludicrously big money offer from a club fighting relegation from the PL (e.g. SAFC) or chasing promotion to it (e.g AVFC). Thank goodness the money madness hadn't started when Bassett was taking us up; or our history could have been so different. Football is a team sport and Wilder's recruitment and management personifies this approach. We must be cautious but so good to feel hopeful again.

Fair points but somewhere down the line a team with ambition has to stop selling its better young players and I its irritating that Everton Fans who have seen DCL are saying how on earth have we got him for a million !

They haven't seen him in front of a big crowd, under pressure yet.

I agree 100% but as an established league one outfit we have left ourselves little financial flexibility. Had we played hard ball and not sold we would have run the slim risk of his value depreciating and the greater/more likely one of him becoming an integral part of the team then having to sell when a larger offer is made. At least this way we manage disruption and continuity.

Neither Adams nor DCL was in the first team or likely to get into it under Wilder at least for the foreseeable future. Very good business. Will be quite different if Brooks, say, starts to get established in the first team and we go up. Would then be seen as a potential asset for us in the Championship.

Yes that's the acid test; what happens if we do go up. I just hope it's a problem we actually have to deal with next May.
