When back fours came to the fore in the early’60’s , they were almost always used with a single holding midfielder in a 4 -1-2 - 3 or 4- 1 -3 -2 line up .

This formation brought a great deal of success to a number of teams including those of England in the ‘66 World Cup and the best ever Blades team of the early ‘70s .

Granted , this formation asks a lot of the 1 and in Nobby Styles in England’s case and Trevor Hockey in ours ,both teams had outstanding exponents of this role .

This formation allows for five creative / attack minded players to be on the pitch at the same time and it surprises me that very few teams use it , particularly when at home against weaker opposition .

There were any number of games last year when I believe such a system could and should have been deployed and would have resulted in a much better outcome both in terms of the result and the entertainment value .

that great early 70s side under john harris mainly played 424 with a 442 set up when we hadnt got the ball hockey won the ball looked for tc then it was switched to either woody or salmons then in to the box for dearden and reece will never forget the 2 victories we had against leeds in 70 and 71 completely ripped em apart in both games

That was what we resorted to in the 0-3 to Selles' Hull at the Lane. Couldn't cope with the press so just started hoofing it.

4-3-3 would be my preferred line up every day of the week.

So does this mean that playing this way only works if the opposition are too proud to revert to long ball football?

Genuinely curious about this.

We also don't have the quickest full backs at the moment so if we did this, surely we will just get picked off by those teams who play to win rather than wedded to an attractive style of football?

He changed the formation to drop another midfielder in the middle, which solved it. He seems quite good at adapting to the circumstances.

From what I've seen/read about Selles since his appointment, he seems to favour closing down teams quickly to win the ball back or enforce errors under pressure. On the flip side he then either wants the team to play quick passes to get around teams closing them down in the same manner, or hold onto the ball and drive forward with it if no one is closing them down (Hallelujah, I've been asking for this for years. No more static subbuteo football.

I'll be interested how Campbell will cope with this. If he could only manage 60-65 minutes under Wilder playing his style of football, there's no way he'll last the same playing Selles' way. On the other hand O'Hare should thrive in this system as this is exactly how he likes to play.

Track back and tackle ✅️
Quick passes under pressure ✅️
Keep the ball and dribble with it ✅️

It seems like it has the potential to be a really exciting (successful is a different matter) season on this basis.

Its always the difficulty isn't it, new ideas, which players can make it and which can't.

You would like to think Campbell has been brought back to general fitness with a season of being well managed. With a good pre season, will he get fitter or is 60 minutes the best he can do?

I am looking forward to seeing more of O'hare. Would suit Anel if we can keep him and Seriki and Burrows.

It does seem like someone who requires a high level of fitness is taking over a squad which I wouldn't personally list fitness as a core strength...

Apparently a previous player under Selles described matches in his team as like basketball games - end to end.

Funnily enough Burrows, Anel, Seriki and O'Hare were the same players who I immediately thought of when it came to who would most likely suit this system. Arblaster and Hamer would fit in well too, but we're only likely to see two of O'Hare, Hamer and Arblaster in any match if Selles is true to his word of not playing people out of position.

Makes the bench look strong if one of those 3 is there.

Obviously depends if Hamer is still here too.

I have watched the U21s a few times on youtube but do they tend to play the same style of football as the first team?

Few names in there who will be interesting to see how they develop to a new style of football too. Marsh, seems to be someone who although on the slighter side, has a bit of an engine and skill to work into this style of play?
 
if selles likes the attacking overlapping full backs seriki and burrows will suit his system perfectly one of our main problems last season was that both rak-saki and hamer had to come back inside to get crosses in under this set up both players can whip early crosses in from the outside im quite optimistic with selles dont think wilders system suited.a lot of them
 
Opened this thread and thought it was probably about a 70's film probably starring Robert Redford probably wearing a kipper tie and sunglasses indoors.
 
4-2-2-2 is the gold standard mythical formation for any manager who is influenced by the German counter-pressing style and it rarely works in practice. Would be a red flag if he tried to embed it in pre season because he’ll inevitably have to switch to the more conventional 4-3-3 that he’s used more often.
 
I would have Peck at the side of souza

Arblaster and Hamer in the 2 attacking positions.

Peck is better defensively, Arblaster better offensively

Peck would need to cover the full backs when they're overlapped so i think it'd be a perfect fit
 
Looking at the Squad he's taken to Spain it will be interesting to see what formation he plans to install (he may plan multiple approaches).

Both the formations he has apparently used in the past 4231 and 4222 have issues with our current squad. Based on what he has taken:

- Too many Strikers for 1 up front: Campbell, Cannon, Moore, One, Marsh . Thats a lot to compete for one spot. If he is trying to maximize this squad I think he may have to look towards 2 strikers.

- Lack of Wingers: Both formations utilize wingers. We'll see if Hamer continues in a wide position. Brooks too is a player who is was asked to adapt to wide play under Wilder. I have no idea how close the Ukaki, Nwakchukwu (apparently a long way off) and Caceres are.

- O'Hare: Only really works as a number 10. If you want to play him then 4231 is the formation, but then is Hamer wide, or is O'Hare his backup. Apparently Hampson can play that role too.

- CM: Apparently his CM needs to do a lot of work. Blaster, Davies (both with inury questions) and Peck are the ones you would look to start. Maybe Brooks too if he wants to move him into that role, and Shakleton too I suppose.

- RB: He has 3 Seriki, Shackleton, Curtis. As we all know (and the club apparently) RB is a key area for a new starter this year. It will be interesting to see what he makes or Seriki in that role.

- CB: As it stands Anel and Bindon would start, and would be a great pair. Robbo is decent back-up to Bindon. I don't know how close Sasnaukas is to being a starter, but he would Anels back-up to start the season I assume (well he would probably play Robbo and Bindon first I assume). We need a new CB, potentially 2 if Anel leaves.

I think Baptiste may be slightly ahead of Sasnaukas, but otherwise I agree with all of this.

Yeah this was based on a list of players in Spain. Don't know if he's there and that was incorrect, or if he's injured/on his way out and we don't know about. He's 21 so if he doesn't impact the 1st team this year he'll probably be gone.

I think this sums it up brilliantly, and also pinpoints why I'm trying to fight the urge to get flouncy. We have a shit load of work to do.

Some that we need to move on, weak in quality and numbers at CB, CM, and I'd say CF in terms of quality, no natural wide players. We have a lot of players without depth, quality or experience in several positions. It's just the risk of moving from one manager to the next and amid several loans returning.

Interesting you say CF, what are you thinking there?

We have:

2 to get in behind: Campbell/One
2 finishers: Cannon/Marsh
1 target man - Moore (I don't know if One can be moulded this way - he has the size)
A few options at AM - O'Hare/Hamer/Brooks/Peck/Caceres.
