THing is, we tend to go way too direct with Madine on the pitch, however we looked more likely scoring that way than passing because that was abysmal for the best part.

Wanted us to start with McGoldrick behind Sharp and Madine.

We looked more of a threat when that change was made. Going long to Madine was pretty much our only way of going down the middle, due to Birmingham's stifling setup.

McGoldrick is by far the most in form of our options to play that position. There is every reason to start him there and no reason not to.

He's in the best physical condition. In the best form. The biggest goal threat. The biggest physical presence. Pops up in all the right positions, and contributes defensively. He splits the midfield and striker roles beautifully.

He allows us to get a third striker on the pitch at next to no cost.

Duffy is without doubt my favourite player of the Wilder era so far but I see what you are saying. He isn't playing nearly as much now and there must be a reason in Chris' mind for that. Obviously competition has increased with McG and Dowell both featuring behind a front 2 but whatever the reason he seems to be dropping out of favour a bit.

I trust the management team implicitly but I will always think that a fully fit Duffy betters anyone else we have in that position. Beans and Blades Analytics also confirmed just recently that he is the only player in the league who comes close to Pablo Hernandez as a creative force.

I agree somewhat though, and think Duffy has been poor last 2 games, but so has Dowell, and for that, Madine or Hogan would be better up top with Sharp.
The thing that gets me, as soon as Madine comes on, we end up playing the hoof more and nothing really comes of it.
Mcgoldrick looks desperate to score and although he's playing really well, he is sometimes better placed to set someone up.
We need JOC fit for the final run, and Enda needs to shoot more, cos last night's goal proves he has it in him, why couldn't he have hit the one at Preston like that, the fucking roof would've come off!

I think whoever plays needs to be braver and take more responsibility than we have shown in recent games. Nobody seems willing to take an opponent on at the moment and we have resorted to the easy option too many times. We should be trying to dominate teams but we seem really cautious and nervy.

Although it's a stock phrase on here sometimes I just trust CW implicitly on this. He has the experience of handling these run ins under pressure at the top of the league. Not just our memorable promotion season but the one he engineered the year before at Northampton as well.

As the situation gets tighter, players will get nervous and not want to make mistakes. Madine on from the start gives everyone the option of hitting it long which we might convince ourselves is a solid strategy but we didn’t get to where we are by playing that way. There is no doubt in my mind that keeping it on the deck, pressing hard and going at teams will get us up. Everyone, especially Tufty, needs to keep the faith. If we resort to hoof ball, we will concede possession cheaply, the defence will come under pressure and we will leak goals against teams who otherwise wouldn’t bother us.

Duffy did play the one-two for the goal but I can’t say it really made a goal scoring opportunity. For me he looked to be seriously lacking confidence and unable to beat anyone one on one.

When Madine came on I think we looked better purely because McG could play wherever he wanted and we generally had two central strikers. Beans podcast may well prove this to be incorrect from a stats point of view, but we did appear to be more of a threat.

I wasn’t that pissed watching it either (I don’t think) and i’m not so sure we did start going long when Madine came on, again Beans will probably cover this. More direct maybe but certainly not long high balls looking for a flick on.

We didn't start going long when Madine came on ,we played the same number of 'long' balls before ,its just an easy and lazy label to hang on him because he actually wins them. Certain other players ie Sharp and Fleck improved markedly when Madine came on ,whether that was down to Madine or Duffy ,not really sure.

What I'd really like to know, is, and this is not a recent thing, why is it we can't use the big man upfront properly.
We constantly play with width, getting out wide, overlapping wing backs and centre backs, and constantly putting crosses in.

Then we bring a giant centre forward on to presumably get on the end of some of these crosses, and we immediately stop doing it, preferring instead to launch it at his head from 60 yards down the pitch.

More freedom from now on. Thing Wilder set us up tight for a tricky run of fixtures which has worked quite well. Shackles will come off now we play before Leeds on several games so need to heap the pressure on them plus two winnable home games.

I can see where you are coming from with this. Not convinced about Madine up top, but what we have to have is two players at the top of the pitch.

McG drops too deep at times leaving Billy exposed on his own.

Sharp and Clarke played more of a two, and at the business end of the season it's about scoring goals - and we need to score goals in what could be tense matches against difficult opposition.
