What lasted longer, our gap over 3rd place or Liz Truss as PM?

In 1995/96, I think that Newcastle were 12 points clear in December. In January, with 13 games left, they were 8 clear with a game in hand. During February and March they won twice in eight games (sound familiar?). They ended up 4 points behind Man Utd at the end of the season. So a 16 point swing.

The only other right royal fuck up I can think of which is comparable to the one that I’m currently watching is Real Madrid in 2003/04 in La Liga. They had a 12 point lead over 2nd place with 12 games to go and finished 4th, ending up 7 points behind the winners. So a 19 point swing, which I think is the record in the decent leagues.

I’ll make the bold prediction that we’ll better that 19 point swing this season with Boro, and I’ll also predict that we’ll finish outside of the play offs.

If that does happen, I don’t want any of the current playing staff to ever, and I mean ever put on a Blades shirt again. I want every single one of them out of the club. The shit ones can go and the better ones be sold to fund the rebuild. I’d also want the management staff & coaches gone as well.

This shit happens at United because it’s accepted and people know they can away with it.

Can you remember anyone being 14 points clear with two thirds of a season played, and then blow it.

I suppose it's just another of those extraordinary, unbelievable fuck ups specially reserved for the fans of Sheffield United
In 1995 Millwall were top at Christmas and got relegated.

Heads have completely gone, the turning point was sharps interview followed by heckys assault of the subs board and now sharp again punching Tom Lockyer yesterday. We are on a hiding to nothing.
I saw that. How did he get away with that..?..

One thing is for sure if we find ourselves in the Championship next season with Hecky and McCall we won't have 22,000 ST holders and football in Sheffield will have turned full circle with the Pigs back as the dominant force.

Its an ugly prospect. Offer me only one defeat to them next season and I'd take it

At the start of the season if you'd have said we'd finish say 5th and not win the play offs, plus reach the QF or SF of the FA Cup, and the manager deserved sacking, it would seem harsh indeed.

However, if we don't get promoted now, then his position will be seen as untenable to many. The only way he survives is if the Prince is still owner.

Just have to hope he can produce a turnaround in performances and we can find enough results. The fans need to stick with the team until its all over one way or another. Yesterday has made me lose a lot of confidence tbh but the fans need to keep behind them as much as possible because there's more chance of that assisting better performances than getting on backs.

Don't waste your breath mate

Some of our fans are as gullible as fuck

Anybody with two braincells could see this coming three months ago, the few of us that highlighted it and expressed concern about our slow, boring, shit style of football was slagged off left, right and centre and called allsorts.

But most knew, even if they didn't say it, but this forum has a click of gullible clappers that can't see anything wrong and to mention or express concern is sacrilege
Exactly spot on post

I listened to Not the top 20 a few months ago, after 26 games there had never been a bigger gap between 2nd and 3rd at that stage of the season. Ever. Typically Sheff Utd to blow it from that position.

Despite the dreadful performances (can't remember us playing well since we beat Burnley) we are still 2nd with a 4 point advantage. Cant help but feel we're gonna absolutely fuck it from here though

He might not get away with it, if the elf take a look at it and the ref says he didn’t see it then they could retrospectively give him a red card, or add it to his incoming ban for calling the same ref a cheat.

It was a big anomaly to have such a big gap between the top 2 and the rest so early in the season

That anomaly is now correcting itself

Trust Sheffield United to be the victims of that correction

The sad fact , in all reality is that by January we were in a bit of a false position. we had a very comfortable run of fixtures before Xmas and were winning without playing particularly well. Now since the end of Jan we have been up against the better teams in the top 8 and been found out .

Specially reserved for Sheffield United fans these sort of failures.

I've said it for years that the change that needs to happen is in the clubs pysche and mentality.

It needs to change its loser mentality, and its "Second is good" attitude "Play offs is good" attitude.
"Avoiding relegation is good" attitude.

It's never about winning or succeeding. It's always about something of a lower standard being "good enough for shitty old us"

It's the reason why we'll fail this year, it's down to the "Second is good enough" attitude that we've heard all season long, and doing the absolute minimum requirement as always.

Keeping Burnley firmly in our sights should have been the objective to keep the team focused, but of course the "We're doing well, second is good enough" attitude shone through as usual, leaving a monumental disaster behind when they fail.

Oh, and 30,000 fans that demand success instead of the "play offs would be good" apologists that we've got for fans would be useful as well.

I agree with a lot of this, JJ.

While our fans are fantastically loyal, I think this works against us at times. For example, the attitude of 'we love the Blades and will go regardless, we love our club and wouldnt have it any other way, we love away days at sh1tty L1 grounds like Fleetwood' means the club can constantly fail, without any real consequence. It's akin to a business constantly failing to deliver a service or product but the customer keeps coming back again every year. We also celebrate failure too often. Case in point losing to Forest in play offs last season, lots of fans were saying they 'couldnt have been prouder' because we nearly turned it around in the second leg. Proud of losing really isnt the foundation for success.

At some point in my lifetime, I want some sustained success at this club. I dont think it is too much to ask for for a club our size. I don't accept the attitude that 'yer' at the one club for success, pal'. This club is big enough to get into the PL and stay there. Look at what Leicester did. I dont feel something like that is beyond us. It doesnt make me less of a Blade for wanting success. Is someone less of a parent, for example, for wanting their child to be successful in life? No.

And if we do end up not being promoted after having a 14 point lead, it is another one of the mother of all f*ck ups to the portfolio (Ched season, Tevez season, Ipswich season, black Thursday, Burnley, Wolves finals etc). Actually it might top these given what is at stake.

I'm not giving up on this season yet, we are still second and if we can find the form we had earlier in the season, we can still make it. But my hopes have taken a battering after Millwall, Blackburn and yesterday's results.

Regardless of what we do, I think it's weird some fans seem to think Wednesday would be a force in the Championship. They've just outspent the rest of League 1 this season - there's nothing to suggest they'll even avoid relegation in the Championship next season.

I think the 'dominant force' comment is relative to us, and the 11 that we'll be fielding next season.

We're still in automatic spot, 4pts clear of 3rd place.

Why not save your meltdowns for IF we don't get promoted.
I can’t work out if we’ll be worse of if we are promoted or if we lose int playoffs, if we’re sold or stay with Prince. Anyone clarify?

If we get promoted, 6 or 7 players will leave and we'll sign about 10 superior (top Champ/Prem players). So we might get relegated, but we'll improve next season... We really need to go up. And we definitely can despite our form and the naysayers.

COYB.
