The Mark Duffy appreciation thread

I'm a big fan of Duffy's, he's almost unplayable in that role between their defence and midfield. Always available even when under pressure, not scared to lose it and keeps trying stuff, picks up loads of second balls so the opposition at times are penned in their own half. Personally, I thought his best game was against Derby, but everyone certainly seems to be noticing him much more since THAT GOAL.

I honestly thought he would be phased out for Carruthers this season but Duffy has just gone up a level to retain his place.

He is a vital player for us, I just can’t believe it’s taken until he is 31 to be recognised as a very good Championship player. Although Wilder and dare I say it, Clough before him at Burton have brought his game on leaps and bounds by playing him centrally.

Who thought he was surplus to requirements?
At the pre-season friendly at Matlock (think he'd missed one or two first-team friendlies because of the birth of a child), I thought it looked as if he was going to struggle this season. Maybe he wasn't fully focussed, or, more likely, he thrives from having more intelligent players around him, and players who are familiar with what he wants them to do in terms of movement and return balls. As I also thought Brooks was poor that night (playing just in front of the back 4), I decided I ought to come clean before my lad comes on here to undermine my credibility even further...:(

Classic example of our formation/set-up getting the absolute maximum out of these players. He's perfect for that roaming role in midfield, picking up pockets of space all over the pitch - out of everyone he has surprised me the most by excelling at this level. What a great player. Remember when he left the Ipswich left back on his arse at some point in the 2nd half yesterday, right in front of the Kop?

Best player on the pitch by an absolute mile yesterday , how has he been deemed surplus to requirements regularly at championship level?

I mean he's as good a midfielder as you'll see at this level. Makes the 'superior la liga' midfielders look like chumps.

Joy to watch this man skipping past players.

31, he's playing like he's 21.

Simply loveleh

He’s one of those that people were saying “never really done it at Championship level” before the season started.

Well, he’s doing it now!

And so are many others in this fabulous United team.

I’m in, I always have been and I spent half of last season trying to convince his distractors how good he really is. Some couldn’t seem to grasp the concept that he’s always going to make more mistakes than other players because he’s constantly trying to make something happen and not just taking the simple pass.

It’s not rocket science...you know who you are! :)

Was delighted when he signed. One of the only opposition players I've ever seen at the Lane get a standing ovation from the home crowd when he was subbed. (scored winner at Lane for scunthorpe)

A fantastic player who has been my favourite to watch since he signed. So skilful, very canny and he seems to have got quicker & stronger since last season.

Carruthers is going to struggle to get back in at this rate.

Hard to pick a favourite from this bunch, as they are all quality, but I've been singing Duffy's praises since early last season. I was genuinely surprised a player of his quality was turning out for us last season, and TBH, I still am. He deserves to be playing at the highest level.

Absolute class every time I've seen him play. I've been singing his praises to anyone who would listen (and many who wouldn't) since he first joined.

CW can spot them can't he?

I always liked the Duff. His workrate, his vision and he can pass a ball. He just seems to get better and better. I spent all last season arguing with my mate, yesterday he finally accepted that I was right and Duffy is integral to this squad.

On an aside I met his agent whilst waiting for a train ( friend of a friend) a few years ago, when Duffy was moving from Scunny. He took great delight in taking the piss out of United saying we were on our arses financially and couldn't afford Duffy. So I am savouring this even more. The agent was Ben Mansford who went on to be dingles and Leeds MD (says it all really).

Barring injuries, Carruthers isn't going to struggle to get back in, he's simply just not going to get back in. Two years ago, we'd have sold our souls for a player of Carruthers's quality and he's still easily good enough to hold his own in this league, but both Duffy and Brooks are light years ahead of him right now. And that's no criticism, they are just proving to be so good.

Absolutely, but as you say it may come down to injuries or even fatigue later in the season. Either way to have 3 quality options for the CAM role is a good place to be.

I can't add much more praise or comment than what I have read on this thread. He is always looking forward always looking to make a 'positive' pass. After watching England play sideways football against poor opposition it is great to see how he always gives us that forward momentum. We are a better team with Mark Duffy in he us an integral part of the way we play.

How many of the comments on this thread are relevant to other stars for United this season?
A good player but will he have the ability to SHINE in the Championship etc ? Perhaps it is down to the Tufty crew working their magic as much as the recharged skills &a motivation of Duffy, Coutts etc

How many more Premiership managers would love to see their starlets getting supercharged by a loan spell here? It may actually be too late for them as we don't desperately need anyone in the January loan window nowadays.

and as we've seen....the agents, not the clubs determine if they come on loan or not.

He's not just absolute quality but he's consisitant with its too, which is usually unheard of at this level.
