The Great Tony Currie

The reason he only got 17 caps is the same reason that Rodney Marsh only got 9 caps, Matt le Tissier only got 8 caps, Stanley Bowles only got 5 caps and Alan Hudson only got 2 caps.

They were flair players.

Oh and don't forget TC still works for the Blades so we won't move on until he does, thank you ;)

...Peter Osgood 4 caps, Frank Worthington 8 caps, Charlie George 1 cap.......

There's a moral in the story somewhere, it was a badge of honour in those days if you didn't play for England much.

I need a couple more drawings to finish off a pic I’m doing... it’s a work in progress...

Anyone any ideas about what to pop in the last two panels?

Was talking about a pick in an England shirt? But want to make sure it’s from when he was with us and not Leeds if so. Any thoughts on the other space?

You need him stood with his hands on his hips just like he often stood or blowing kisses with both hands to the Kop.

when he ran down the wing with the ball blowing kisses to the crowd
when you meet people of a certain generation and the subject turns to football, as it invariably does the conversation is usually along the lines of ‘who do you support.. sheffield united.. tony currie’

He did that against Watford when we clinched promotion, Bert can still see him now doing that.

Remember him doing that on the left side attacking the kop in the 2-0 win against Stoke in April 1975

....and I'm in my 50s.

Will very old blades be talking about Kyle Walker in 50 years time?
A player with more England caps.

What's England caps to do with it.

In 50 years time do you think 'old Blades' will be reminiscing about the magic moments Kyle Walker gave us.

I'm struggling to think of any now so never mind 50 years time.

Even in one of the yesterday's Points of View from Roy's Brentford selection TC gets a mention.

Looks good. The only bit I am not convinced by is the 'quality goal' - he caressed the ball, rather than hitting it hard, which your picture implies. I can see there would be problems in representing that in cartoon style, though.

Yeah... to be fair the south stand was in the process of being built in the pictureso technically should just be a load of concrete :) so I calling it artistic license :)

How about the avatar of Yellarbellyblade , for TC and Woody together? Or the one of ucandomagic , for a characteristic shaping of his body? There were also decent pictures of him with Pele, after retirement, but still representing the Blades.

how about a montage style thing with TC Worthington and Hudson.. the rebels :)

The only two who came close to TC in that era IMO, especially Hudson who was a very fine player although as I have mentioned elsewhere, I saw them have two 'shootouts', one at Stoke and the other at the Lane where they were both clearly trying to show who was the better player and TC came out on top both times.

As for the others of his generation, I fail to understand why some Blades keep comparing Lord Currie with Rodney Marsh and Stan Bowles. He was miles better than both of them and, in respect of the former, had the advantage of not being a complete cunt.

Played for England in Russia as a Blade. Played one of his trademark long passes ( textbook body shape left foot pointing to where ball is going,
left arm doing similar. Eyes on the ball, perfectly weighted just bounces into path of team mate) to one of the dirties who shall remain nameless, but his initials are Alan Clarke.
Also against Chelsea at the Bramall lane end, he gave the runaround to what looked like six of their team on the right hand edge of the box. They couldn't get near him he ran rings and then got a cross in.

That game at Russia. Papers were saying that he was our Gunter Netzer

The first time I saw Netzer,i thought straight off that he was very similar to TC...similar position and role in the team, similar build and from a distance on tv,looked similar...Netzer the German TC.

Right last few questions...

A) and I know it sounds odd... but for the picture does anyone know of any quotes fromTC regarding what he was thinking when he kissed Alan Birchenall? If not I’m
Thinking of just adding something along BT the lines of ‘they’re never going to let us forget about this’ based on the fact everybody gets them to recreate?

B) has anyone read anything/ chatted to TC about HIS favourite SUFC moment as a player?

C) has anyone read anything/ chatted to TC about HIS favourite England moment/ game? (That he played in).

Muchos appreciated x

Think his favourite England game was the 7-0 win against Austria in Sept 1973. He scored with a lovely volley and assisted some of the goals. You can view them in WalthamstowBlade 's 1973-74 video

So I need to add one last picture... and it’s going to be with Woodward and a Barrel of money.

Would it be too cheesy (or totally weird) to draw them in that Morecambe and Wise jumping pose? I’m not young but not old enough to really connect things from that era... that said I seem to thing there is a connection? And feels like there might be a good picture in there somewhere?

They used to do the side-by-side song with a cane and hat type routine, not the jumping pose, I think. And we ain't got a barrel of money, so technically speaking, there should not be one. None of this matters, of course, and there is indeed a link to Morecambe and Wise.
