I didn't know of this thread before as I only recently joined here, but it has been fabulous reading everyone's memories of what was the best English footballer I have ever seen. There are too many moments to pick out just one or two, I could go on all night about the things this man could do with a football so I won't, but I remember Tony being a guest of Bobby Charlton when he had a weekly show on Sky some years back, & a clip of a goal scored by Tony when he was a Dirty Leeds player, at Highbury against Arsenal, who had Pat Jennings in goal. TC got the ball out on the right touchline, just a few yards up from the corner flag, he looked up, saw no-one in the 'box & hit a superb shot with the outside of his right foot. It looked like a hard cross at first, but as it arrowed across the front post it curled into the opposite top corner, leaving Jennings flapping at fresh air. Bobby turned to Tony & said "well, I have never seen that goal before, I can tell you meant to do it as there was no Leeds player in the 'box, & I can also tell you it is one of the best goals I have ever seen in my life!"
I had the pleasure of meeting TC when he had his testimonial year, maybe '86/7/8 time, & had his picture taken with the team I played for, with him in our kit, & one of just the two of us, they are my most treasured possessions. Incidentally, you can clearly see the state of his knees on those pictures, they were not pretty & I had been aware of the rumour that they troubled him at United & that many times he had physio rather than trained, something he confirmed when I asked if it were true. The mind boggles at the thought he could have been even better!
