I appreciate this is being posted following a defeat to Crewe - but it's pretty staggering how the feel good feeling that seemed to be around in July/August has all but gone. I expected a few 2-0/3-0 away wins, players playing with a smile on their face, a bit more swagger about the team and a genuine title challenge but I can't believe how little things have changed. I guess Adkins has to take a share of the blame but ultimately the players we have are absolute crap. This is not breaking news - but what the hell is going on?

Surely the time has arrived to simply drop some players for good. This doesn't need to be done like Clough did with Collins but some players need dropping permanently and some maybe for a month IMO merely to bring their hunger back. It's all a bit easy for everyone at the club at the minute (bar the fans). Us mugs turn up, hand over the cash and that's where it ends. Turn up, pass it sideways, don't take a chance, go home and all is forgotten. It's time for Adkins to wake these morons up because it is absolutely criminal that this squad have not recorded a win against Crewe, Oldham, Port Vale, Colchester etc.

It's quite feasible that in a couple of weeks we could be 15th/16th/17th and like someone mentioned in another post, we could lose best manager we've recruited for a while.

I am sick of these players. They should be ashamed but won't be obviously. I just wish we could somehow start afresh and let these losers go and steadily work their way down the leagues

I posted weeks ago I would only keep about five of the current first team squad if I could, it's down to about four now.

The manager however will get the blame and will almost certainly be sacked if we lose to Worcester in the cup next week.

The funny thing is I remember thinking the exact same thing this time last year.

Fucking groundhog day every season.

post of the day. agree totally. we ve been shite since the day collins joined

Surely he wouldn't be sacked!!

If we go out of the cup at Home to a none league side he will be in jeopdy... I don't want it to happen as I don't believe their is anyone better...but...

I am sure the players will be out down town again tonight and getting some serious thinking in. :)

only pay the players when we win bet that would sort the wankers out .cant believe some are on 6/7/8k a week and turn that dross out week in and out . id list the fucking lot

Won't work though because someone else will pay them.

Apart from Brayford we probabley fielded our strongest team squad today, who would you per innately drop?

And people shot me down in July when I wasn't over the moon with the changes...

To be fair to the board in that instance, they appointed a manager who had taken two teams out of this league and taken one of them to the PL and arguably created the foundations that allowed them to go from strength to strength. What was there not to be over the moon about for little old SUFC to be able to bring a manager like that to the club at a time when we are absolutely desperate to get out of this league?

Subsequently, the players (as we all knew/know) are awful. Letting us and Adkins down massively. Their contracts are in place and sadly nobody can do anything about it apart from wait for them to expire and trust Adkins to build a squad capable of promotion.

It's about more than just replacing the manager.

He ain't going to get that long, this is the modern game no one gets that time, it's instant success or on yer bike.

But this is SUFC, we generally reward not achieving!

I remember in the Summer the claims from some quarters that we only needed two or three new players, not a complete overhaul.

Oh how I laughed.

There has been one ever present consistent during our demise and that is Mr McCabe and his board colleagues.

The annual sale of our best player combined with the regular sacking of managers has bought us to this point.

There needs to be some consistency and backing.

Wilson inherits Adam's signings, best players sold in August and Jan, Wilson gets sacked.
Weir inherits Wilson's squad, key player sold in August, Weir sacked.
Clough inherits Weirs Squad, some good loans, optimism all around. Best player sold in August and not replaced. Clough spends in Jan sacked in June.
Adkins inherits Clough's bloated and unbalanced squad, best player sold as the window slams, Adkins brings in 5 questionable signings and heads for the sack.

We have to break the sequence and give a manager time to build and complete a squad even if it means accepting a season of rebuilding.

I agree but you referred to the changes in July - that mainly being the manager.

Yes, sorry you missed my point. The problems we've had for 5 years have always been blamed on the manager, hence 7 managers / caretakers between Blackwell and Adkins.

So for me, the manager was not the problem, regardless of bringing in a man with a track record and good cv at Southampton, we're not addressing the root cause.

Phipps, McCabe, Baki and Brannigan all sitting around with Adkins talking up promotion as if they've now solved the problem in July was always going to end with a stark realisation that their arrogance is as much to blame as any failings last season.

However the failure since July to even attempt to tackle the defensive and midfield issues with any permanent signings has been almost criminal in.

We may have the prettiest white away kit to wear and most durable pitch on which to count our jamie Murphy money, but when you have Howard, Collins and JCR back as your most experienced players the players we're heading nowhere fast.

In fairness it's not an overhaul, we needed two central midfielders, two centre halves and a striker.

We got a winger, a striker and a loan striker during preseason.... Then resorted to emergency loans for an unfit centre mid plodder and an injury prone centre half... Oh and we sold our best asset

I'm just glad that bringing Adkins in allowed us to tie up the Diego deal! Phew!

The come down started when Gillingham banged in their fourth.

Well indeed, it might not be a lot of players but what you've listed in basically the spine of the side (excluding the Goalkeeper, whom I'd also have liked to have seen replaced). I said all Summer that the spine was not good enough but plenty reckoned we just needed a couple of players and we'd be flying.

Even now, there's a large section of fans that think there's easily enough talent in the squad to go up, but I'm really not sure what this is based on.

We have plenty of talent, but it's the flair players, with 3-4 players more in the key positions, as well as some hard bastard captain, we'll get much more out of the other players.

Sadly, I think it's time to look elsewhere for a keeper, we need a big character in goal to pull strips off the defenders
