The case for Lundstram

Lundstrum In until Jan. We may have to carry him for a bit but he'll be a better player.

We can then loan a perm player til the end of the season and we will have an improved player as back up.

Because of our league position, I think people understandably are forgetting this season was a lot about development to start with anyway.

You never know, next season coutts maybe his back up. Never doubt Chrissy Wilders ability to improve a player.

The problem Lundstram will have now is that people will compare him with Coutts and that's unfair, we don't have another Coutts is the harsh reality. Give Lundy a chance for who he is.

Is Lundstram a squad filler? Wilder doesn't really do squad fillers they have to be able to do a job if required. He signed him because he thinks he's capable. No two players are the same, so trying to identify someone to do what Coutts has done is a futile exercise and not one that I'm sure Wilder and Knill even contemplate. It may require a different set-up, a tweak to the tactics, others doing things slightly differently, but that's the art of management. Team did OK against Ipswich without Coutts and I expect Lundstram to be put into the team.

Wilder may well change his priorities for the window now, the position we're in maybe changing it anyway. What happens between now and then might change it again.

The last two goals we have conceded have happened because we did not close down an opponent in a central area. Our holy trinity have been superb and Coutts will obviously be missed but maybe Lundstrom will make us more solid?.

Just watching the highlights from last night shows that our creativity comes from all over the pitch, not just Coutts. He will be missed, without a doubt, as he brings a calmness on the ball which seems to transfer to the other players and he seems to always have time which is something good players have. However, on the upside, Jake Wright, CCV, JOC and both wing backs have got a killer pass in them let lone Duffy and Fleck and the time that Coutts has been in the team has allowed the confidence of the others to grow and that won't just evaporate. CW and AK won't allow it!

Watching the deadline day video we got a glimpse of a chart with the whole squad listed in position, indicating primary position and extra cover, and it appeared every position had two players (plus extra forwards). I believe Lundstram has always been intended as Coutts’ understudy, and with Coutts playing so well we’ve only seen Lundstram in cameos just adding an extra body in midfield to see games out.

We’ve already seen against Ipswich that Lundstram is first choice to fill Coutts’ role, and also that he can do a good job of it. The important thing for us as fans is to get behind the lad and not expect him to be a replica of Coutts. He will do things differently, he will not protect the ball as well and he will give it away more, but that would be true of anyone trying to fill Coutts’ boots. Hopefully a run in the side now will help him settle into a role and develop.

Another thing to keep in mind is how every set back seems to be an opportunity for Wilder and Knill to tweak things and improve on what we already have. Maybe a few weeks from now we’ll have evolved our style into something even better.

Good post from the OP.

I'm one who has been quite critical of Lundstram. I thought he was poor against QPR and poor again after he came on last night. Last night I decided to watch him quite closely, as I reckoned there was a chance he was about to get a run in the team. He tried to play the Coutts role, dropping deep to receive the ball from the back three and then looking to link with the attack via Fleck/Duffy/the wingbacks or a long pass into the channels. He looked tentative and a bit sloppy, and made one really shocking error that led to a decent chance for Burton. As I said in another thread, I had the impression by the end of the match that the defenders were looking long themselves rather than instinctively looking for a short pass to Lundy, the way they would if Coutts was in that position. To me that was ominous.

But, plenty of Blades in this thread and elsewhere have made the point that he needs game time, that he's replacing a hugely popular and influential player (would make anyone a bit nervous), and needs our support as he tries to make the role his own. I'm persuaded by that argument, I reckon we stay off his back and give the lad a chance to succeed. If he's not doing it by the JTW we need to spend some money.

IMO, of course we should stay off his back and give him a chance. We're supposed to be supporters. The clue's in the name. If we don't get behind him we don't, as fans, deserve promotion.

In the one game where Lundstrom started, Ipswich, ccv and Duffy both increased their time on the ball and JL played a different but effective game. I guess that is plan A for Tuesday. Only 3 days to find out

Given a run of games I think Lundstrum will prove an adequate deputy for Coutts, reckon we will sign somebody on loan in January everybody we want permanent will now go up in value as clubs now know we are short in that area......I wonder if short term we may look to the youth of Harvey Gilmour or Regan Slater as cover on the bench or drafted into the squad in case any January targets get priced out of a possible move by their clubs??
