The case for George Long.

Saw him four or five times for Motherwell on BT last season and he's improved quite a lot. Not that surprising as he's developed physically and benefitted from the experience.
In terms of commanding his box he still tends to err on the side of caution.
I'd say L1 and the SPL are of a similar standard.
I'd be surprised if he was our first choice but wouldn't have any objection to him being back up, nor would I mind if he went out on loan again to continue to benefit from first team experience.
I'm fairly confident Adkins knows a bit more than I do about keepers so I'm happy with whatever he decides is best for the club.

Did you hear Howards interview last week ? He did as thought play through injury at the end of the season which impaired his agility and confidence ,I can see why he played ,because the back up was so poor but this should have been addressed and is unfair to judge Howard on it as he was probably the best keeper in the division before Xmas.

I did hear it. Injuries may well have played their part certainly. And here is another issue with Howard - he is the type that picks up too many of these injuries. His body doesn't seem to be able to cope with the demands of a full season - Clough I think said it was the most he'd played in years last season, and the effects were clear.

Interesting discussion. I've never been a big fan of Long but saw both Scottish play off games on TV and he was immense. He's bulked up a bit too. I'd like to see him and Howard both fit and fighting for the goalie's jersey. If we were to bring a new keeper in I'd probably favour getting rid of Howard, as Long has more potential.

People tend to forget his 21 clean sheets 2012-2013, a lot of which were while still a teenager. He ballsed up a few times, but so does every keeper, and hopefully he's ironed out a few of those issues.

He'll benefit massively from a solid defence, so once that is sorted it's worth giving him a run in the team. He's proved he can do it as this level.

Howard is ten times the keeper that Long is or ever will be ,he might be 21 but he has the presence of a 10 year old ,not good enough for Sheff Utd that is a certainty.

That's an opinion and it's yours Sitwell, fair enough but a sweeping statement though.

Turn your mind to the fact that Howard had only 66 first team games by the time he joined us at the age of 25 and 53 of those were in Scotland. Long has vital experience already at the age of 21 and he is an International.

Opinions count of course, but so do facts and Long has over 70 first team games already.

Long made mistakes when he played for us but he was only 19 years old and he also had plenty of good games. Yes he lost some confidence by the time he was dropped and Howard brought some composure to the team, however Long has another 7 years or so to reach his peak as a keeper and he's nearly two years older than when you last watched him in our first team.

He's a committed lad and knows where he has to improve. Time will tell whether he will play in the Premier League one day, but we shouldn't rule it out just yet, not for a few years in fact..

Long is a mute. He doesn't speak to his defence so should not be a goalkeeper.Might as well have a blind driving instructor.

Perhaps Long stopped talking to his back 4 defence , when he played in goal .

Why , - because they never listened to him , because they were in sixes and sevens themselves .

Whether or not either Long or Howard , are actually good enough is open to opinion.

However , to give them , or indeed any other goalkeeper a fighting chance , we have to have a settled , consistent , commanding back 4

If a defence are not listening to their goalkeeper he should shout louder, not shut up.

Is there evidence to suggest the 21 year old has developed vocal chords?

How old are you Jehova?

Do you remember being 19 years old. Did you have full voice at work amongst older and more experienced people?

Don't you remember how much you grew up by the time you were 21 years old?

Then think about when you were 28 when it is reckoned any goalkeeper reaches his peak.

Im 35 and I remember being 19 yes. I hate this default age argument. He is a professional keeper ffs. I have heard 17 year old keepers in sunday league command the defence better than him. If hes too young to speak then dont put him in net.

Why do managers keep putting him in the net? I wonder if they know more than we do?

Why did Barraclough want him back at Motherwell this season? Why hasn't Adkins let him go back to Motherwell? Why did Clough re-sign him. I'm afraid it's all a bit beyond me.

Can't we farm him out to your Sunday league team where he belongs. Mind you he probably wouldn't get in the side.

Wy did he get dropped for the blades?

Why did he get slagged off repeatedly onhere for costing us points?

I would not have him in a sunday league team, as he does not speak and the defence would not know what was going on.

Watch his recent interview on BP or YouTube and compare it to the last one he did about 18 months ago. The lad's grown up.

Lol, yeh you're probably right. Let's face it what do bloody managers know.

Mind you Adkins does seem a decent manager so no doubt is preparing to sack the lad as we speak!

Keep up the banter Jehovah.........

Listen mate, if we just accepted what managers decided there would never be any debates on forums like this, its only my opinion. I do exist and I know what you've been doing. Keep it up and I'll smite you with hairy palms ;)

Careful, you'll be counting the hairs on my head next!

Of course it's only a forum, and your opinion is that Long is not good enough for Sunday league. That's great, there's not much point discussing further!......

By the way, it's good to know I've risen to 'mate' status! ;)

I've seen Jehovah play on the hallowed turf and can categorically confirm that he must have always been a gobby twat and that it is highly likely that he would have been the same at 17, 18, 19, .....

He only needs one chance, that Jehovah only needs one chance (from the spot that is ;))

Since most are deciding whether Long is good enough from his last few games played for us, it is only fair that we judge Howard on his last few games played as well. On that basis, I don't want either playing first team for us. We also don't really know how either are looking in pre season, surely give them a few friendlies each first!

Based even on comments on here, I think it is fair to say that our new manager has a decision to make re Howard v Long in goal.

If the manager is full of self confidence and has confidence in the Board, I would not blame him for thinking longer term than Howard and giving Long a big chance.

That all depends on what he sees in training and in friendlies.

What have I seen? A genuinely great shot stopper in his own "arc", not prepared to venture beyond his own "arc". Quiet, hesitant, but technically superb for his age within his limited areas.

He has to dominate to the penalty spot, he has to venture outside his own "arc" or comfort zone and pull off some saves which sre unexpected; Long does the "expected" easily as routine but he never excites anybody with the unexpected. Also he has to talk to his defence, big time.

BTW Sitwell and anybody else, I've not watched him since he was 19 years old and I would imagine he's a man now and a lot different.!!

If we're thinking of keeping him long term he deserves a good run in at the deep end. All goalkeepers have a mistake in them but if he can learn to deal with it and regain his confidence, his mistakes will become fewer and he'll be a reyt goalie. Hopefully the action will be all up at the other end.
Perhaps we should drop down a division too, just to make sure he's up to it?

Rather than just ignore that post, would you mind if I say on this occasion that it is a waste of space on here and would be more appropriate elsewhere, not that you are wasting your time on here, not at all.
