The case for George Long.

What if some club offered us £700k?

No for two reasons;

a) hes a young well rated English keeper so hes worth more than that ( although it would fit in with our strategy of discount sales )
b) the money would disappear like smoke and not be invested in the first team ( as happened with the proceeds of the last several player sales )

I agree about the fee which I pitched at that amount as I'm interested about other views, including those who don't rate him.

I'd also be interested to know what we all feel he is worth at this moment in time i.e. what we would get.

I'd say £1m but could be worth 3x that in 12 months time.

At the time I wrote the O.P. he was worth nothing.

George Long transfer fee price would be around £400k and that's being generous . I cannot see any championship side being that interested . I know he is not the finished article , but if the blades want promotion next season , then a new goalkeeper is required ( especially if Howard is on his way ) . Long needs healthy competition , or he will stagnate . He may do that next season sat on the bench anyway .

He is not the best goalkeeper in league 1 and there is a ongoing debate , he ain't the best goalkeeper at the lane.

New goalkeeper for me next season who can save us 12 points even with a good back 3 / or 4

And just because we had a clean sheet today , it makes no difference to what's required .

Previous question - would you take £700k then?

Woody , if we get a quality goalkeeper and had another competent goalkeeper coming through the pathway , I would bite anybodies hand off above £500k.

The name of the game would be to keep Long as cover , but needs must sometimes.

Also I don't actually rate him .

UTB.

He's under 23 and has over 100 appearances for the club... We'd get a decent amount of Compensation.

Also the Star is reporting he's close to a new deal (or something to that ilk)
The kid deserves a new contract.
Pulled his game together showed some real guts coming back having looked finished at the Lane

He may be close to a new deal , but we still need a top quality goalkeeper . I still harp on that we need somebody who will save us 12 points .

Good luck to George Long , but bear in mind he is in the same boat as Jay Mc, Flynn and any other who finish making the numbers up . Adkins shout , and with him being a ex goalkeeper he will know better than anyone if Long is the short term , long term answer . Bear in mind it's not stability in league 1 were after , its promotion , be all end all .

I personally think Goalkeeper is one position we don't need to worry about for the immediate future.
Long is growing in confidence in every game and i think most will agree he is a fantastic shot stopper.

Long will make a top class keeper sorry but we aren't wanting in that department.
Like a solid CB , creative midfielder and a proven striker

Was going like this until you said send him out on loan. I think that Long is plenty good enough for this league and perhaps the one above.

To be fair to Long , playing behind our back 3 / 4 which included Collins , would have made Lev Yashin indecisive and look a poor goalkeeper . Whether it's Long or another in the net next season , it will be Adkins shout .

Wouldn't surprise me if Kelvin Davies didn't arrive at the lane in some capacity .

Yea hopefully as goalkeeping coach

Hope Long does make it and becomes no1 for a long time . Just cannot see it . Depends who Adkins brings in when Howard goes . Will it be a new no1 or a seasoned pro to help George , but also be good enough to play at league 1 level . Wigan made a good shout with there goalkeeper , but again it will be down to priorities and finance that dictates what we do .

I know he hasn't conceded in the last 3 games, but he's scored no goals, got no assists and not even had a shot on target. Get rid.

Pity a season isn't just for 3 games . If we want promotion or to stop in this shit league , Adkins has to be ruthless with all players . If they are out of contract or get a new deal and stay , so be it .

Long is not the finished article . Let's hope a more quality back 3 or 4 , helps to make him a better goalkeeper .

Trouble is at the lane a player has more than one good game , and he boosts everybody , after the shit we have put up with for the last 2 seasons . If he was that good some fucker would have bought him , and as usual we would have cashed in.

I'd snap anyones hand off who offered over 500k, I'd even take the day off work to personally drive him there myself.

Good luck to the lad, but his future is L1 or below imho. He doesn't command his box, he flaps at crosses, his kicking, which I thought used to be decent (far better than Howards) has gone downhill in recent weeks, you don't see him communicate with his defence, and ffs he can't/won't even set up a wall!

It's one of the positions I would personally address straight away. A good goalkeeper can win you points, just look at De Gea at manure - and no I'm not comparing the two.

I must be watching a different game.

Were you there today Moosie?

I imagine not judging by your ill informed comments.....o_O

Yes I was there, and yes he did claim a few crosses but none of them was he put under pressure, bread and butter stuff for any goalkeeper. He had one "shot" to save in the second half from what I can remember as Chesterfield offered little in the way of an attack all game.

And yet again... Sharp was setting up his wall for him.

He came for a ball that was never his and took McEverly out on the edge of the penalty area flapping for it.

Absolutely Moosie, that's his (Sharp's) job.

Dead right ST. Good to see McEverly dishing out a captainly bollocking but then praising Long a couple of minutes later. Something we would have never seen from Collins (apart from the bollocking bit of course!).......:)

I had forgotten the compensation thing - I stand corrected.

I don't think Long is the finished article but he's the only player who's out of contract that I would offer a new deal to. He does some things well and he might get better as he gets older.
