My mind goes back to the Bristol city game where they pressed us high and with no Madine we didn't have an out ball and basically got out thought
For that reason I'd play mcburnie
He is going to have a big role to play for us this season.and needs to start asap

Tbh I saw the game differently. I thought we got away with it with Bournemouth. Think most teams would have beaten us comfortably with Us performing like we did pre changes . I was furious with how we played until Billy scored. First how we seemingly abandoned our philosophy and then when it showed we were ten times better when we played our way. I’m sure we would have beaten a poor Bournemouth had we started the way we finished. But I’m hoping it was just first match nerves, we will see against palace.

Against teams who are better at breaking down teams who defends deep, maybe we would have chosen different tactics, but Bournemouth are better at punishing teams who over-commit going forward.

After 12 minutes today Bournemouth had scored twice vs Villa. Villa allowed a through ball in behind their defence after 30 seconds, resulting in the keeper giving a pen away. A few minutes later they lost possession in their own half and had nobody to close down Wilson who scored with a screamer.

These were the things we wanted to avoid last week, therefore going for a bit more solid shape. We'll never know how we'd done if we'd picked a more attacking line up from the start, but like a few of our fans I also think Bournemouth would have preferred it if we'd done that.

Personally I don’t like giving the ball away so much. I think we have built a squad over 3 years to play a certain way, so let’s play it. We’re clearly better at it. Not everyone plays there best in there first game, they were definitely there for the taking.

BILL WILL LEAD THE TEAM OUT TO MOR ROW.

That is all.

Get a good nights sleep.

I would expect Morrison and Freeman to be in side since we are at home

2 - 3 home Eddie ?
Their number 9 bullied our defence all match, and was involved in all three of their goals.
Plus, not putting Stears on for JOC was a mistake.
And they are a bogey man to us!

Palace won 9 away games last season, including at Man City. They've been very good at keeping clean sheets and hitting teams on the break. Last weekend's tactics worked well for us against another team whose main strength is counter attacking. There's an argument for keeping similar tactics and let them show their limitations in possession.

Can't agree Bergen, not at Home against a team destined to be in the bottom half of the table this season. 3-4-1-2 against their 4-4-2 allows our 10 to get in between the two lines of four keeping their defence pushed back and having the bonus of two forwards in advance of the 10. Villa came with same formation as Palace last season and got destroyed in the first half because they couldn't handle Duffys movement. Hodgson is not known for changing his tactics.

3-5-1-1 allows Palace defence to push up and put more pressure on the flat 3. Consequently our out ball is limited and we are forced to resort to hoof. Reims in pre season was a good example of this. It also closes up the space the Centre backs can run into restricting Tuftyballs main weapon.

Howe changed their system at the start because he was fearful of 3-4-1-2. He must have been surprised when we didn't start with it. It was the first game away and we stopped Bournemouth playing and looked comfortable but were hardly in the ascendancy. When we went to our natural formation later on we looked more capable of causing teams at this level problems.

Palace had a good end of season but are said by their own fans to be slow starters. They also are worried about their defence as although they score a lot they concede a lot also.

We have to stop worrying about the opposition at Home unless its Liverpool and Man City. As the game progresses formations are tweaked throughout. We've pushed Basham many times into midfield and gone to a 4 at the back. Lets not start with a negative formation at Home we have to win these sort of games.

3-4-1-2 to start IMO is the right way.

One problem with the more cautious setup....

We can concede at any time against any opponent in this league. An early goal against throws our gameplan.

Going with the solid approach is a gamble.

Tbh I think too much is being made of Palace away form last season. Average points achieved away from home in premier League on average is approx 35%.

Palace got 60% of their points away last season. Previous 4 seasons combined they averaged a little over 5 wins away per season. Last year they were 1 win away from almost doubling that.

Rather than the trend continuing I see law of averages saying this comes back down this year.

I really don't know what the team will be tomorrow we can virtually pick two teams and they would both be competitive. I suppose it all comes down to fitness and how well they have done in training and I don't know either so will be happy enough whoever CW picks.

Personally, I hold the belief that, contrary to what many, I suspect, aim to achieve by publishing their recommended team sheets on this forum, our manager, indeed, our leader, our messiah, will not be influenced as he is - thankfully - very much his own man and in a position of great strength from which to carefully consider, select and name his starting team, based on all resources available to him - resources of course, which aren't available to us, the supporters. It goes without saying, or at least it should, to anyone with a modicum of intellect, that we should unanimously defer to him on these matters, rendering threads like this rather inappropriate - and some would say disrespectful. While many can't resist and are sure they know best, despite never having achieved multiple promotions in professional football, I am utterly content to sit back, relax, and await with great anticipation the confirmation of our manager's selection decisions come Sunday, the day we match up against Crystal Palace Football Club, while leaving you this educational message to ponder.
Someone’s been reading itsinyerblood’s thesaurus.

Don’t forget, if this is an attempt at humour you must use a smiley at the end of it to clarify the tone of the post.

It’s the same as last week barring any late injuries
Repost, despite what anyone ‘wants’. I’m fairly confident in my source again. Same as last week I was told yesterday afternoon. I don’t know the subs.

Lundstrum Norwood Fleck will be the 3 in midfield, bet my bollocks on it.

I don’t agree with it though, this is a game we should go for and I hope we don’t adopted the fear of losing prior to the focus of winning.

If we play a flat and very negative midfield 3 tomorrow I will be surprised. That is just asking for trouble, especially at home against a poor side.

If Lunny starts at home v Palace Wilder has lost his bottle. Sure this won't happen.

Personally I don't have much confidence in my own ability of predicting results. It's so difficult! I think there's a chance we could win playing either formation, but we could also lose. I read on here fans saying that we'd lose by four goals at Bournemouth if Lundstram started. Such confidence in one's own ability to predict football results amazes me. It turned out that those predictions weren't right after all, and consequently I'd expect the confidence of said fans to have taken a knock, but instead I read "Lundstram wasn't "good" he was "ok"!" Fans being "furious" at our performance.

What I saw last week was an away side that managed to dictate the pattern of the game. We knew what their strengths were and made sure they were unable to make effective use of them. We knew what they didn't do well and were pretty comfortable dealing with their efforts at that. Although they scored from that set piece we had made sure that a lot of their attacking players were having off days i.e. we actively caused them to have off days, individually and as a team. We had gained confidence and belief during the match and did very well when we went for it for the last third of the game. I felt Wilder got things spot on.

At home to Crystal Palace was a game I'd expected us to play 3-4-1-2. But that was before I learned a bit more about their team and stats from last season. I wasn't aware that they were so good away, and how they'd played to achieve that. Beating Man City, narrowly losing to Liverpool, 0-0 at Old Trafford - whatever they do when they travel must work well for them, and reading "Roy's View from", their fans seem to agree that they counter attack well away. At home - when it's generally accepted that they will be expected to attack more - they struggled. Only Huddersfield scored fewer home goals last season. So there seems to be a scenario they do well in, and a scenario that often sees them struggling.

Which gives Wilder a real dilemma. He has to predict how the pattern of the game will be, and how he can dictate and affect it in a way that gives us the best chance of a win. For successive matches, the opposition team seem to share a few similar strengths and weaknesses. Should we keep last week's tactics, looking at them as good way to approach teams like that? Maybe we'd be playing into their hands if we go 3-4-1-2 and try to penetrate patiently? Maybe they'd be happy to let us do that while they punish us on the break? At some point I would like to see us make use of our new attacking weapons and go with our "usual" formation, but will tomorrow be ideal? I don't know! I'm not confident at all! Neither in my own ability to predict outcomes, nor (with respect) other forum members!

Hopefully Freeman for Lunny but how do you fit Didsy/Billy/Robinson and McBurnie into a front two?
Glad I don't have to decide!!!

I think for all Wilders public bluster about doing what we did to get us here, he is still settling us in gently and waiting for the new players to bed in and get used to the systems.
Hence the caution and keeping things tight with no risks.

By September we usually start setting into it and really starting to play, and I suspect that will be the case again.
I see the team in a months time being a little different to the one starting now.

Henderson
Basham Egan O'Connell
Baldock Norwood Fleck Enda
Robinson
McGoldrick Sharp

Subs- Moore, Jagielka, Osborne, Lundstram, Ravel, Freeman, McBurnie

Palace are not a poor side. Average premiership side yes, poor no. Especially decent away from home.

If we start with the same 11 as at Bournemouth I think it will be too negative.

Freeman and McBurnie should start for me.

UTB !!

Personally think it will be same side, maybe McBurnie for Didzy.
Saw an interesting stat yesterday, only Man City scored more away goals last season than Palace.
