Our current one is better.

The only 2 players you would want from that squad is McDonald and Maguire.

Looking at that squad I am surprised we got the play offs.

What about Murphy and Doyle? Would you take Collins over McEverley? For his faults on high balls and distribution, Long could stop a shot that came from outside the box and Davies is quickly turning into Porter MKii but without the cult status.

We have evolved so little in 2 years. We've replaced bang average players with more bang average players and expecting them to perform better.

I meant they are two players I would want to have back if it were possible.

Clough probably won't start him, because he prefers strikers with poorer scoring records, but if we get knocked out tonight and McNulty does not appear again I will not be best pleased.

---------------------Howard
Freeman--Brayford--McEveley--Harris
Murphy----Basham--Doyle---Done
------------S Davies---Mcnulty

Brayford if fit
If not, Basham CB, Coutts CDM

Davies was brilliant in the first half and McNulty is one of our best goalscorers despite playing very little, he also gets the tap ins and goals that count like Southampton.
Second half put Done as a striker and take Davies off depending on the score, I would like to fit Baxter in their somewhere but think we need two defensive minded midfielders if we play two up front, which I doubt we will

Howard is the best we've got.......but needs replacing for next season. I would get Paddy back for a couple of seasons.

When was the last game Collins played, with the magnitude of this game will he be up for it, is he match fit?
Remember Collins first game for the blades, when he came on loan, at Hillsborough, sure he can manage this one.

If Clough doesn't play him, and makes do, and we lose, he is loading the gun against his stubborn crust

I'd go for
Howard
Brayford Alcock McEveley Harris
Basham Coutts
Flynn Murphy Done
Davies

Switch Freeman in for Brayford if he's not fit enough and Adams for Done if he can't manage a full game. Then bring Done on for 2nd half/last 20 mins.

Murphy in the middle supporting Davies for me. He's already shown he can go past people and can finish, let's get him doing it where he can hurt the opposition.

I'm unsure about Alcock, could he last a full game? If not get Collins in.

Alcock, Done, McNulty all start.

Howard,
Freeman, Alcock, McEveley, Harris
Flynn, Coutts, Basham, Murphy
McNulty, Done

Above is a guess, but given players out there 3 in middle of midfield looks unlikely - unless Flynn moved there.

The key on Monday will be winning MF and dealing with their WB's. Swindon attacking is a different propostion from Swindon defending. They over-ran us in both areas at the Lane after the first 20 mins and they won't change that system - maybe 352 or 3511. In my view there is a risk wherever you play Basham and personally I would opt for taking the chance at the back by playing Basham MF in the hope we can win MF and thus reduce the pressure on the defence.

Their No 8 is a class act and we need to deal with him. Doyle hasn't really got the pace and would concede too many freekicks, Coutts is a bit dodgy tackiling wise so I would be tempted to try Freeman and he has scored more than either of them. We need a genuine Nobby Styles there for this one (Is he out of contract? :p).

I would go 3 at the back - McEveley on the left, Brayford or Alcock on the right and Alcock or MaGahey /Collins in middle. Kennedy is a huge loss. Should allow us to get forward more and help defending set pieces.

WB's playing a higher line would be Flynn and Harris to take out the WB threat and push them back.WB's drop back to protect the FB channels and shut down their WB's space (with 4 at the back the FB's didn't know who to mark and their WB's had a field day)

Pace and space is important in attack so I would have Murphy (right) and Adams (left) pushing on in the AM channels. When their WB's go forward there is space in these channels so we attack down the flanks with WB's and AM's - diagonal balls into the channel (ok its hoofball lol) to stretch their back 3 and hopefully give 1 on 1's in attack.

I would start with Done in the front striker position for his 20 mins and then replace him with McNulty. Davies on the bench and hopefully not needed.

A kind of 361 but more of 3 4 2 1 formation - reverting to 5 4 1 when defending. If we go behind or are still chasing Baxter on for one of the 3 central defenders making it a 2 5 2 1 formation. Risky yes but the key for me is make Swindon defend because its not their strong suit and if we lose 5-1 its the same outcome as 2-1.

CV already submitted to JP :D

To be fair that's the best team we could have gone with from the players available - the most attacking at any rate

the most attacking at any rate

Definitely. However, have to say that I think the Alcock-McEveley pairing is an enormous gamble. Is this the first time they've been paired together? I can't see us keeping a clean sheet. But I can see us potentially scoring a couple.

Has to be done. Need Bash in the middle for this and he can cover any aerial threat from there too.
There's a whisper about Brayford's injury being worse than first feared :(

I'm guessing that tonight was an example of why Clough might have slightly resisted putting the Alcock-McEveley partnership in action.

Still, put two actually decent central defenders into the middle of defence in tonight's lineup and we might actually do quite well next season. Revolutionary thinking I know...
