Tanganga

I think the problem with Robinson is that we made him club captain.

He's back in the side because Souttar got injured. He's not done much wrong since Holding has joined (Sunderland game is the last big mistake i think). However, I do feel if he wasn't club captain, Holding would have his place now.

There's a difference in "Not doing much wrong" and just playing a much better player.

I agree with him that it was a major mistake, but not with the "Wilder must go" stuff which is total nonsense.

Holding has barely played (predictable) and his loan is almost half-up.
Cannon has contributed OK in patches, but it stands to reason that it wasn't a good allocation of that level of resource.

We had long enough to source a replacement for Souttar.
If we do miss out on automatics, I think it will be the above mis-hap that will have been our major undoing (after the -2).
I'm just being a smart arse.
My main point is, Tanganga may have never been an option. The Cannon money wasn't guaranteed to get him, let alone whether he wanted to move up North or whether Millwall are willing to sell.
We obviously wanted Dunne, and reportedly we put in a £2m offer and they wanted £3m. We didn't up our offer because someone at the club didn't think he was worth the extra million. The ex Everton RB wanted to come, he even told the press he wanted to, but when his club demended more money we said no. Clubs still have some power.
Chris might have called Millwall an hour after Souttar's injury, but if the club or player doesn't want the move, it's not happening. I'm not saying that's the case but for people to think Wilders missed a trick, forgotten about Tanganga as an option or picked a striker over a CB replacement is crazy. We have no idea about the ins and outs of things. Every weekend people pick Wilders team sheets to pieces having absolutely no idea what's happened with illness, fitness or training all week. Transfers are the same.
What I will say though, is that we've got Holding and before the start of the season a lot of Blades would have chosen him over Souttar.

Whilst I don't disagree with anything you're saying, we had 6 weeks to replace Souttar and didn't get it right.
It seems like we prioritised areas of less need.

Our options shouldn't have been limited to Tanganga (expensive) or Dunne (a right back) and we didn't seem to explore even those two until the final days.
Feels a lot like bad planning.

Dunne should have been a target from day 1 of the window. It appears he wasn't. That was a mistake. If we opened talks for him straightaway, he'd be here now

Won't be a mistake if we end up promoted

Harder to sign players during the JTW than in the summer window

Agreed, and I still think the Cannon work was done in the summer. We just ran out of time or money. It's like this one was always a goer.
I COMPLETELY understand people wanting a Souttar replacement, but if Cannon fires us up (pun intended) and Holding does a job, we'll all be happy.
And I stand by, there was no like for like Souttar replacement available in January.

Looked like CW was tapping up Dune after the game at QPR ,So don't be surprised to see him in a blades shirt next season

Not sure any of the options from the Championship would have been amazing at CB. Maybe Dunne at RB instead of Clarke but at CB? If you look at the best defense in Burnley they have an ex Man City youth and a foreign transfer which cost them £10m as CBs which probably tells you where to look and what you have to pay.

I would like to have seen Gilchrist be given a chance at CB as that's his proper position and he's as tall as Egan Riley at Burnley and taller than Robbo for those into their height. But that's unlikely to happen given we signed Clarke on loan instead of a permanent deal for Dunne or the lad playing in Germany.

Callum Doyle from City is one to look at if we go up. He’s had three good loans now at Championship level with Cov, Leicester and Norwich but is unlikely to breakthrough for City now at 21. He’d represent a decent investment for us though we’d give him that opportunity to step up a level and start building his career away from City and we’d get a good assets that’s likely to only increase in value as a ball playing left footed CB.

He's a lefty too isn't he?

Yeah I think he’s an obvious target for us if we go up at a position of need. Norwich won’t be competition for his signature he’s a good age with a great development background and you’d assume he’s someone we’re well aware of and that he knows plenty of lads from his City days who’ll sell the club to him.

I think us and Burnley are likely suitors for him this summer whichever one of us goes up or both if one manages it through the playoffs.

Is Tanganga having a good season compared to others CB's? Or is he another Aden Flint, Jake Cooper? Just because they've done well against us we've overhyped them.

Rather than an x amount in the pot I think it was a decision based on potential return. Cannon young English goal scorer vs a good defender.

To be fair, we were never going to outright ‘replace’ Souttar. Whoever came in would have been an ok replacement at best. Souttar fit our system perfectly and was an ideal partner for Ahmedhodzic - you can’t just replicate that. We struck gold with him.

I was personally hoping Tanganga would have been the replacement - alas not to be. There could well have been a few names banded about that weren’t in the public & we ended up plumping for Holding as the best option available. Robinson is a fine back up defender when needed, but we really don’t want him in the starting 11 every week. I hope Holding turns out to be an inspired signing for us.

Agree with all that you say above.

But the simple fact of it is that HS got the shirt off JR and RH has, as of now at least, not managed to displace JR.

Tanganga would have. IMHO.

Good job he's Irish then.
Well he's their "adopted cockney".
Once players get a taste for the London life ...
And career security , with so many clubs around at various levels , they can put roots down and know they'll get a club within commuting distance , whether they're developing or regressing

I agree some what. The London life will be a huge factor for any sidewards transfers. However we wouldn’t be sidewards for him it would be a big step up. Even if we didn’t go up this season it would be a big step up.

But it would always come down to money but we seem to be well backed which is the positive.

And if we are serious about having a good go at staying up in the EPL we will need to set our recruitment standards a lot higher than Jimmy Dunne.

I appreciate what you're saying, but we're not going to sign a dozen PL quality players.
The reality is, we'll need to future-proof the squad in the likely event of a relegation and Jimmy Dunne helps with that.
