Below shows how the table would look if only results since the appointment of PH were included:

I think it's mildly interesting that the top four teams are the current play-off teams and in the same order.

Which proves Hecky is tactically clueless.

46 points from 25 games works out at 1.84 points per game - or 84 over a full season.

That’s 5 less points than we got under Wilders premier league promotion season. It’s a decent effort & far from ‘proves’ that Heckingbottom is clueless.

Show's that he's done pretty well results wise especially considering the injury list.
And yet if we don't secure top 6 (promotion or not) it would be a disappointing finish still.

Something to consider though is that a change in manager does sometimes give a squad a fresh bounce and I think we got that more so this time due to our squad and the familiarity of reverting back to how they are used to playing.
I'm not suggesting that the players were reluctant to play a different way. However because Slav did want to play a different formation and style he was putting too many players in incorrect positions or roles that don't play to their strengths. Had Slav been given more players in the positions he wanted I'm quite confident he would have done better.

This is where whatever we all think of the Prince/board it was a big error in judgement.
The board felt good about appointing SJ but expected him to get the best out of a squad used to playing a certain way and so they were reluctant to free up more funds.
They didn't really give him the tools he required, more so suggested these players you have should be good enough.

They perhaps recognized/decided that under PH they may already have the answer to not only not needing more signings in January but to also see us improve form and results which is the best of both worlds.

Do I think if PH was appointed last summer we would be higher..... yes I do. We may even be in the top two.
But I guess what I'm getting at is it also might not have quite panned out that way either...

Hecky's done okay, much better than I thought he would, not because of him particularly but considering the shyte that had been going on leading up to Slav leaving.

Still can't help but think he's been given the job because he won't make waves and will just get on with it, which is very Kevin Blackwell, Dave Bassett and Danny Wilson of him, and well, pretty much everybody else that has the job for longer than six months and hasn't walked out before that.

Dave Bassett not one for making waves ? :) :) :D :D :D 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣

If a new manager means a win, why dont we appoint a new one every match next season, we'll be promoted by pancake day.

Sack him. No track record (apart from the one we'll conveniently ignore)

With Heckingbottom (or Wilder) there from the start of the season instead of Slav, and even just an average injury list, we'd have been going back up automatically wouldn't we?
PH's points per game is 1.84 - that would've given us 80.96 after 44 games and put us in 2nd in the table...2pts in front of Bournemouth (who'd have a game in hand) and 6pts behind Fulham on 87pts.
That's pretty impressive given that the points per game average includes the Omicron covid backlog and subsequent injury crisis.

(* Caveat: The above is of course a very crude calculation ignoring a lot of factors and variables)

The only thing I can take from all that, is we are a better side than Fulham

1.84 points per game is a brilliant return. I don’t understand the negativity towards PH. We’ve been shafted by the postponements around the festive season and a subsequent plethora of injuries. My major gripe would be that we are overplaying in the final third. Sometimes in this division an agricultural long ball that keeps turning the defenders reaps its rewards. As soon as we went route one out of desperation against Reading we scored almost immediately.

New manager change seems to have done wonders for WBA, they’ve already announced he is staying according to local TV in the midlands last week.

What if we factor in the 2 games before hecky came in where Slav decided to do the 3/5 at the back?

I'm a fan of PH and have backed him since his appointment. However I can understand why fans have been perplexed by some of the recent team lineups (even with the injury issues) and substitutions/tactical changes (ineffectual or conservative in approach).

I s'pose it shows it's about right then really doesn't it- over a full season it averages out about fair. If we get in the playoffs we deserve it, if we don't, we don't.

He's done well overall that's for certain.

I still question his long term suitability for the role as he is going to need to oversee the rebuild of this team - he has no track record of rebuilding a squad and his only managerial success has come when stepping in as a caretaker and being made permanent when at Barnsley. If we don't go up this season the job in the summer is huge and if we get it wrong then we could find ourselves slipping down the league.

That pretty much fully month without a match really fucked us over. I wouldn't be surprised if that exacerbated our injury problems as well.
