Forgot to mention the Jack in the Box at Hackenthorpe. Lots of Blades got moved out there from Attercliffe in the 60s. My Uncle Jack liked this pub on a match day, partly because of the name which he believed was some sort of sign that he should drink there. My Uncle Fred (the one who was a mate of Blades legend Fred Furniss) still lives in Hackenthorpe but the Jack pub, like my Uncle Jack, is sadly no longer with us.

As stated jack closed at the end of Feb but the last 7 years run by a pig but stopped all the nonsense and was quite inviting to everyone

I didn't even know it had shut. In my mind, Sheffield is just like it was when I left in the early 90s. Of course, it isn't and I don't recognise most of it anymore. Had two cars sound their horns at me last time I drove from the parkway through town as I kept looking around thinking 'not seen that before' when I should have been concentrating on driving.

I moved away in 2006 and when I went back last year I was shocked by just how much had changed, and like you say you have an image forever imprinted from when you left that is Sheffield, so when you see the changes it really hits you.

Went to the Railway for the first time ever yesterday for a couple of pre game pints. Was supposed to pick up tix and then Ken Jnr from station but it took me over 2.5 hours to get from Stratford so Ken Jnr had to walk to the Lane and get the tix and get in the queue for the beers.

Usually go to the Cremorne cos I like my Kelham Best treat before a game.

Thought the beer wasn't too great in the Railway. Had a Lynch Pin and a Crystal Gold. Neither seemed to be kept that well.

Will be back to the Cremorne pre Cov

That was a bit further down Prince, the road below Fairleigh. Elm Tree at the very end of City Road just before it becomes Mansfield Road just below Manor Top. Woodthorpe lower down on same side as Elm Tree, been demolished a good ten years.

Green Room has a great atmosphere that's not totally ruined by it being a filthy shithole with the worst toilets in town.

This is very true. Also a very good cheapo cooked breakfast and a decent pint of Guinness! (use the disabled toilet btw, everyone else does!).

I have loved reading this thread. For the last 10 years I have lived out of town so have to drive to the match. As such its just a swift one in the cricks before the game. Its true also that the advent of real ale has improved some of the pubs a lot. I remember the old crown for a great atmosphere on match days but one of the worst pints of tetleys going. Although I was a frequenter of the White Lion which in my view had the best pint of Tetleys in Sheffield. Was also gutted last week to notice that the Matilda was closed always had a couple in there on the way back to the bus station.

When I lived in Sheffield I used to enjoy having a swift pint in a pub near the Lane and be able to chat to fellow Blades fans on a non-match day. Lots of these pubs have now closed down, but some Blades pubs survive – and they need our trade, especially on non-match days.So get supping!

Anyway here’s a list of traditional Blades pubs near the Lane that are still open. Some of them have been there before the Blades existed. Many of these pubs will have hosted Blades fans for over a century, returning from seeing us winning the cup final or becoming champions of England. These pubs are a piece of Blades history and need our support.

The Cricketers, Bramall Lane

After the sad demise of the Sportsman this is probably the Bladiest Blades pub of them all. Closest pub to the ground and run by a Blade. Interesting Blades memorabilia on the walls

The Railway, Bramall Lane

Ditto, always been there. Used to run coaches to away games. At one point it was so popular on match days that you needed a “Railway card” to get in (I had one). Recently had a bit of a facelift. Small and cozy with a popular beer yard.

The Old Crown, London Rd

I’ve been down to the Old Crown a couple of times recently and it's much better than it was - great live music, good pool table, nice beer garden, interesting Sheffield-related pictures and album covers on the wall. There’s a big Blades crest in the main room

The Sheaf, Bramall Lane

Not been in here for ages but it’s always packed on match days. I once saw a drunken Vinnie Jones stand on the bar and get his knob out in here. Maybe there ought to be a plaque.

The Standard, St Mary’s Gate

Not been in her for ages either, but a traditional watering hole for those who walk to the Lane from the train station

The Clubhouse, London Rd

Originally a staunch Blades pub known as the Hermitage, more recently the Scholar. It used to be packed on match days, along with the now-vanished Lansdowne opposite. Decent pub. Last I heard it was run by a Canadian, who faced major protests when he tried to put up some kind of pig symbol on the wall.

Cremourne, London Rd

Traditionally a Blades pub, this now appeals to a more student / alternative crowd but still gets busy on match days. Used to be my local when I lived on Woodhead Rd in the 80’s – it was a very rough place back then.

Golden Lion, Alderson Rd

Decent enough pub, with a new beer garden. Gets packed after home matches. I slipped on their wet wooden decking after the Charlton game and managed to cut my hand open but still managed not to spill my pint

Lord Nelson aka Fanny’s Arundel St (off Arundel Gate)

Great little place full of characters. If you’re a certain age you might encounter some familiar Blades characters from the past in here. Good place to be on the piss all day.



There are others that deserve an honorary mention. Barry’s on London Rd used to be a Blades pub (forget the name) and some Blades still sup in there. Likewise the Beer Engine on Cemetery Rd. There’s the Albion and the Barrel on London Rd too, but I’m not sure if either of those are open these days.

Maybe I’ve missed some out, I dunno. There are also other traditional Blades pubs further away from the Lane, like the Penny Black. New places have sprung up too, like the bars at the Copthorne and in the JSS, and the Sentinel on Shoreham St which gets full of Blades on match days. Any others?

Any one else remember Gary and Carol Mason from Fannys? Carol was great often cooked us a breakfast when an after bird session turned into an all nighter / sleep in the darts room downstairs

I've no idea where the Hornblower was I'm afraid and in Sheffield terms, there isn't a hill, more of a slight incline.

I have been living in North Lincs for the last 10 years so my Sheffield Calves have largely withered away. anything more than a step is now something akin to Everest. Hornblower was just off West Street near that Indian restaurant what was it called? Nirmals oh bloody hell this is getting ridiculous

The question is... is it age that is making me forget the name of every establishment in Sheffield or the amount of ale I supped in them??

Used to go in Sunday's, if he was in the mood he told some great stories.

It was Karaoke later in the afternoon and there was a young girl on who sounded just like Whitney Houston, she couldn't sing anything else but her stuff though.

That happened at the Cremorne and Jason lost his licence as the SYP had been round all the pubs warning them not to open. The Cross Guns went in his wife's name after that. Did that get raided as well?

Lived on Fentonville St at that time and remember that well. Used the Crossed Guns very sparingly and that came to an end one Saturday post match when after a particularly vicious tear up between 2 regulars and just before the arrival of South Yorkshires finest the victor was congratulated by the then landlord with words that have never left me,towit..

"Tha danced on is eard kid. Tha danced on is eard".

I decided that there really is too much of a good thing where "local colour" comes in.

The old concrete flats as you walked from Dev Green towards Broomspring Lane, over the dual carriageway? I lived in Broomhall in the late eighties and used to walk past them into town most days. I remember then being boarded up and then flattened. Used to be a bit scary walking past late at night when they were empty. Always used to get tapped up by tramps for '10p for a cup of tea'.

Don't think I ever went in the Domino but I may have a couple of times. Mesters just down from the Square had a few characters in it. Used to go to CJs a bit but it was quite scary so tended to go to Sonny's on Brunswick Street as it was mainly old blokes playing dominoes and cussing a lot.

Before it was The Hornblower it was The Raven - notable for me as it was where I had my first drink on licensed premises on April 5th 1980, the day before my 15th birthday.
I had 3 pints of warm Whitbreads that I pretended to like and was absolutely bongoed.
