I thought it might be worth laying out what has happened between the last ball being kicked from last season and this season:

G 0
In - Grbic (29)
Out - Grbic (29)

RB -1
In - Polendakov (18)
Out - Clarke (24), Gilchrist (21)

CD -1 (given RH replaced HS)
In - Bindon (20)
Out - Anhemdhodzic (26), Holding (29)/Souttar (26)

DM -1
In - Soumaré (22)
Out - Souza (26), Choudhury (27)

RW 0
In - Ukaki (20)
Out - Rak-Sakyi (22)

LW 0
In - Barry (22)
Out - Brereton-Diaz (26)

CF -2
In -
Out - Moore (32), Brewster (25)

Numbers, down 5 players.
Fees, up £20m
Wages, down 120k on perm departures

So we are down at RB, CB, DM and CFx2.

Reading between the lines we might be intending to see Seol (RB), Godfrey (CB), Iroegbunam (DM), and then I’m not convinced we sign any CF.

We could well lose Robinson and Norrington-Davies putting us 7 down before additions and replace with only Zätterström, so net down 3.

If the above takes place then I feel we still need one more defender as insurance.

Realistically how many do we see being added?

Should probably just make it clear you've estimated fees and wages.

Good to lay out the players like that, thanks.

I think attack is the least of our worries. We need 3 defenders and a right back since robbo is probably going. Selles is clearly pissed sounds like he's been shafted. Hamer will probably go as well and be replaced on a shoestring. The owners look to be hiding behind a "for the future" plan which roughly translates to "money in our pockets now"

I have the receipts form Argos 🤣

FWIW the fees are taken from transfermarkt and the wages from c apology. You can criticise either or both but reasonable enough in terms of there or thereabouts. If they say Kieffer was on 25k per week for instance, it’s not likely we’ll find out later he was only on 10k or we were paying him 50k.

Annoying thing is, we don’t need an incredible defence, just a competent one.

Give a base for Hamer and O’Hare to create and you also have Campbell and Barry who are excellent finishers.

It wouldn’t take much but it will take more than a guy who has been injured for almost 2 years playing in the wrong position and a kid aged 20 playing the level for the first time. It isn’t a bit ask.

'So we are down at RB, CB, DM and CFx2.' ...and even this is too simplistic, as those whom we have replaced are not like-for-like e.g. it is unlikely Ukaki will provide a similar return to JRS.

Then, across the board we are down a shed load in terms of league appearances and experience, leaders. Our highest profile signings so far (lol) are Barry and Bindon, who have huge promise but whom are just trying to establish themselves in the Championship for the first time.

One or two rumours on the board that the Poker Player affiliated with COH is calling the shots. If that’s the case (and full caveats apply), you would hope that Helmy comes to his senses, gives him the boot and gets a football transfer operator with pedigree involved. The performance to date has been absolutely rank.

Looking at the ins and outs on transfermarkt, and I get younger players are underrated at times, but the indicative value of incomings was 7m and the value of outgoings 70m+!

Half assumed they'd be the sources. Capology has some wild wild guesses on it though. Hence my desperate uncontrollable need to caveat for you 😄👍

I don't know who found Soumare, but on his first outing he looked like a good find.

It's been a joke so far, were much more likely to get relegated than promoted as it currently stands. We need at least two good experienced championship standard centre backs and no outgoings to be in and around the playoffs

I suspect hamer will be sold, we will fill the gaps with cheap or loan signings and be in a relegation scrap

Selles sacked by January, even though its not really his fault

We had a competent, experienced championship defender lined up in Dunne at QPR
He would have added much needed height to the back line as well as cover at RB, I can only think the massive QPR offered him more than us

Good to see it laid out like this.

At the moment, the only area I would say we have "improved" from last year is LW with Barry showing, so far, a bit more than BBD did last season.

I wonder if we are just waiting for PL to start and we will then pile in for a good number of loans. A lot of those we have lost were loan signings after all.

I wouldn't mind too much us taking a chance with our CFs we have. Campbell is the only proven player but If we are only playing one in that position, Cannon, One and even Marsh maybe should be enough if they can take there chances.

big couple of weeks, I will judge once window closes.

Signing Dunne wouldn't have made anyone look clever though

So basically, it’s what Selles said, we need 5 players.

Thanks Champers.

I don't suppose you'd be able/willing to do a comparative chronology of signings last summer against this summer to see if we're as far behind as it feels?
(I'm not being lazy BTW — I've got two young kids demanding attention 🙁)

Can't afford to lose Campbell, Hamer, O'Hare, Cooper and to a certain extent Burrows (I know his early form has been iffy but two senior commanding CBs should give him more confidence).

Add in Barry and Soumare and there's 7 certain starters.

Ukaki and Bindon look too young, too lightweight and too inexperienced to be starters but could be good bench options.

Need at a minimum:
LCB
RCB
RB
RW

And even then we're fairly light on depth.

You have not mentioned any of the young players who are breaking into the squad. Whilst I agree that some experience at the back is needed we may not need as many as 5.

We only have two loan places left so permanent signings will need to outnumber loans from this point

It seams COH are learning on the job or at least I hope they are .
New to football and their 1st proper transfer window with a new manager was always going to be tough and its transpired to probably be tougher than expected.

Bettis is a competent CEO but cant do it all , whatever process they have in place for has left us short with the clock ticking.
I'm not so sure its a lack of money or ambition but selles and bettis need help .

Let's just hope the penny has dropped for future windows and hope that somehow by necessity rather than design leaving it late provides some opportunities.

Looks to be a very busy couple of weeks ahead 🙏

The absolute bare minimum is 5 , for a good first team and a back up squad more like 9- the youngsters are not ready at all.

Plus the CB's need to be top quality, and ideally 6ft 4" and built to cope. Every time Birmingham got a corner, could barely watch we were just so lightweight.

Faffing about looking for cheap fixes from abroad, which inevitably takes longer. If money is tight need to look at 2 CB's and RB 'the best of' from League 1.

Defence needs players that are tall/ strong and good headers - we have enough players with skill in their feet - right now we need steel at the back.

I don't disagree.

I don't mind the cheap development player experiment but that's what it is , something that may give returns in a year or two.

We need a few finished articles for the 1st team , it'll cost as clubs will be unwilling to let players go with the season already underway .
However good players will find themselves surplus to requirements over the next week or 2 and perhaps that's where the opportunity lies .
