"will be the largest football stand in the country covered by a single cantilever roof"

I like the sound of that.... shame we won't fill it!

This idea of having to 'fill' a stadium crops up all the time. Many clubs operate on substantially less than full capacity. The question is 'can you fill enough seats, often enough, to make it worthwhile'

If and when [Blackwell Out] we return to the Premiership the answer would be a resounding Yes. Our crowds were excellent last time and would be better still again thanks to building from a higher base. More away fans could be accomodated too.

I think that capacity would be reached on a number of occasions. Let's not undersell ourselves.

The application also includes reconfigured car parking and a new area of public space where statues of Club greats will be displayed.

Let the debate commence!

My choice would be Neil Shipperley, but this would probably reduce the capacity of the car park a little too much.

HMS Ships!

I'll go for John Gannon and his perm

33,000 in our last foray in the PL, now 25,000 average, wheres the evidence that clubs put an extra 19,000 on their attendances by going up and staying up?

How many away teams sold out the away end when we were up there?

I don't think its underselling, I think 44,000 is an unrealistic regular target

The latest permission will offer enhanced corporate facilities, media suites, TV facilities and a new multi-use hall which can be used for conferences and indoor sports such as basketball.

What?
No Classroom?
Shoddy!!! :D

Not sure i'm reading correctly? We obviously can't up it by 19,000 as we don't have that many seats. If we did have the seats and were in the prem year in year out then i think we would.

Don't forget all the little boys and girls in Sheffield now want to support United over Wednesday cos their mates at school support them so by the time its built all of their children will support us because we're still the best and then gone will be the days that anyone will even contemplate supporting wednesday as they're not even in the league and they now play in the worlds largest 2 sided stadium as the other 2 sides have been made into an extension of the Hillsborough college AND by which time we'll be finishing top 6 every season and 44,000 isn't enough anymore and so we need 50,000 and Kelly Brook is now Mrs Bianco and i have the best looking kids in Sheffield (who support United by the way) and i also star in Bianco does america, a x rated movie that shouldn't be seen by minors (but it pays the bills) and our Kelly loves it cos it paid for my manhood extension of which has "the Brut" tattooed on it...............

allready wasted enough money on that statue that played up front satdi alongside creswell

Thats some bloody good home brew (or grown) you got there Matt !!

:thumbup::thumbup:

Matt we average 25k (ish) at the moment, when all improvements are done the ground will hold 44k. Thats 19k extra fans to find on a regular basis.

I'm sure for big games we'll fill it, but i just don't see how we'll consistently get 40k plus

I'm normally pretty positive, but I just can't see where the extra fans will come from, even with success. Its pretty huge ambition and its just been done for 2 weeks in 2018.

Besides, the pigs will be getting 300k by 2018, all sat paying a quid to sit in their classroom style stands watching games on the internet... I think thats what Strapon said

30,000 per game is a realistic target but I agree no way would we attract 40,000 plus to the ground.

True the south stand needs a good make over but increasing its size really would be pointless.

Potential 44,000 stadium fillers

Manure
Liverpool
Newcastle
Arsenal
Chelsea

40,000 maybe

Pigs
Leeds
Everton
Citeh

Just my thoughts and largely based on the fact that we could accomodate away fans in both tiers of the Lane End and the fact that some of the above teams would attract people who just wanted to see Manure, Arse etc

I would definately give the whole away end to the away fans should we grace the top flight again, all the above teams would fill it. Pigs are always grunting for more tickets every year. To the above add Sunderland,Villa, Dingles (on their uppers) and forest etc etc. Quite alot of teams over the years have brought massive followings to the lane dependant on position and form.

The point of the expansion of the south stand isn't just about SUFC capacity, its a pre-requisite of world cup ground status.

Additionally, the project provides for increase conferencing facilities, retail outlets, office lets, and other income generating opportunities within the extended building. So whilst we probably wouldnt fill it week in week out it would still produce income for years to come which is not all footbal related and continues the work already done to other parts of SUFC ( see the comments of Ron Reid on the cnn report about the academy and the office and resource rentals).

Lets not also forget that having a set number of seats is one thing - how many are actually available after netting off for segregation, the extended exec seating which ties in with the expansion of corporate facilities and other sponsors getting access.

The development may also bring us more representative matches - again increasing our club profile to the wider world and spectators some of whom will then become 'blades'.

In short I dont think we'll sell it out every week - but the overall project would be beneficial to SUFC.

I wonder what the net benefit would be if we didn't bother with any expansion, or borrow to fund it, and just spent money on the team?

spent what on the team ?

banks wont borrow football clubs money to buy players

I know that, and I didn't suggest it. It's naive to think that borrowing to build will have no effect on the playing side of the budget. If you doubt that, I suggest you see what happened after we borrowed to build the South Stand in the first place.

In those days we were a football club pure and simple and I think we had very little in the way of other income streams so the South Stand would have been funded from and for the football alone presumably.

The criteria used to lend money on capital projects is alot different now compared to when the South Stand was built.

McCabe has been very shrude in ensuring that any projects such as this, the academy and the office block corner all come with additional income generating opportunities within the build project which attracts lenders, increases the business asset base and therefore has minimal - if any - effect on playing budgets.

Unless those opportunities do not bear fruit, of course, in which case there is no income except from the football side but still non football related debt to service. I'm prepared to be proved wrong, but my understanding is that the debt is not ring-fenced.

And I keep hearing about other sources of funding - can someone show me the net benefit that non footballing activities have brought? Is there money from, say, the hotel or the office block that has been spent on the playing staff? (this is a genuine question, not sarcasm - I don't know the answer).

I think we all ought to realise that whilst Mr McB is a Blade, he is first and foremost a business man.

We, the fans, think of property investments, buying foreign clubs and renting out offices in the clubs property portfolio, etc, as income streams to support the club whereas the truth IMHO is that the football club to Mr McB may well be just another income stream amongst many, albeit one intertwined with all the other income streams to provide a massive income stream which is his main ambition.

Would add Spurs and Sunderland to that list. Depending on what league we were in, Forest and Derby would also be maybes?
