So, it looks like we've finally served our time in League One, and we have suffered some dark days, bad players and worse managers - but what is the worse XI since being down here.

4-4-2

GK

RB
LB
CB
CB

LW - Martyn Woolford
RW
CM - Dean Hammond
CM

ST - Conor Sammon
ST

Manager:

Ive took the liberty of completing three absolute shoe-ins.

Lets start by discussing the keeper...Long? Simmonsen? Howard? Any keeper that isn't Moore?

Long or Simmo - I guess Simmo produced more notable howlers but Long's overall game was probably worse. At least Simmo had something about him to get a gig at Everton, can't see Long getting anywhere near.

True. Although we are yet to see Long take a penalty.

There is stiff competition for the other forward role:

Poleon
Forte
Ironside
Paynter
Beattie
O'Halloran

And that's without thinking about it.

In fact, as terrible as Sammon was, you can make a good case to leave him out, as he outscored that lot on his own - Forte was the only one who managed a goal.

And it's forgotten now, but Johnny Ertl did make the odd appearance in our first season down here, so he could go in midfield somewhere.

A tricky one to answer this!

GK - Simmonsen
RB - Westlake
CB - Alcock
CB - McEveley
LB - Williams
RW - Brandy
CM - Lappin
CM - Hammond

FW - Higdon
FW - Sammon

It makes me a bit ill, looking at that XI.
Williams is a great call.

Higdon was terrible but was he Forte/Ironside terrible?

That's true, however you've got to consider goals to game time. Sammon got considerably more time than Forte and was presumably on a much bigger wage. For that reason, he made my XI.

Similarly with Ironside, Poleon and O'Halloran - as they were all young there wasn't so much expectation. So whilst they weren't great, miss out for that reason.

Agree 100% on Williams and Higdon. He scored 2 league goals and the winners in 2 rounds of the league cup. Ironside did nothing.

Simonsen

Westlake
Higginbotham
McGinty
Williams

Brandy
Hammond
McAllister
McFadzean

Forte
Paynter

There were undoubtedly some other horrors that have missed out, some certainly worse than this 11 who weren't on the pitch long enough to make a lasting impression such as Jasper Johns' awful cameo, and Marlon King's short but effortless spell in the same season.

There's probably plenty of others I've missed too who've been worse, but these were the first that sprung to mind in each position.

Fair points.

There's so much choice when we talk about crap forwards!

Oooh good thread. Don't think we'll have a problem filling any position somehow.

To make it fair I'll only consider anyone who played more than just the odd game.

How about this absolute eyesore?

Simonsen

Westlake McCarthy McEveley Williams

McGinn Hammond Lappin

Sammon Higdon Paynter

That team would create a lot of chances.

What a team. That really is the stuff of nightmares.

The only way you could make it worse is do a Clough and play another bad full back at centre back instead of McCarthy.

Christ I forgot about McGinn, great shout. Stick him in my midfield too next to Hammond.

I didn't think McGinn was that bad. There, I said it. Admittedly at the time he didn't have much competition.

Steven McGinn played 37 games for us in 2013-14. I find this staggering. Did anyone notice him?

He wasn't so much terrible as almost completely anonymous, like, say, early Jamie Hoyland or the all time champion Paul Thirlwell.

Lyle Taylor?

You could easily make a case for all of the team coming from players signed in the Jan 2013 and Summer 2013 transfer windows (plus Hammond).

I've just had a look back on Wiki at the Squad Weir had along with the dross Wilson brought in after his team got sold from under him and there's some absolute horrors in those two transfer windows.

GK - Simmonsen - Last seen at Pune FC in the Indian league. Presumed retired.
RB - Westlake - Playing his trade in the West Midlands with the mighty Stourbridge
CB - Alcock - At Doncaster Rovers
CB - McEveley - Setting the Scottish league alight with Ross County.
LB - Williams - At non-league Guiseley. Doesn't seem to have featured.
RW - Brandy - In the Thai league with Ubon UMT United... Let's hope they have a Nando's there to keep him happy.
CM - Lappin - In York's FA Cup final squad. Sorry FA trophy.
CM - Hammond - Without club
LW - Woolford - At Fleetwood, surprisingly. Though unsurprisingly, has only played a handful of times this season.
FW - Higdon - Spearheading Welsh footballing giant's, Bangor City's forward line
FW - Sammon - On loan at Kilmarnock. Tipped for an Irish call upo_O

It makes me a bit ill, looking at that XI.
Added a 'where they are now' as I've got ten minutes on my hands to look it up.

Some memories are worth keeping. looking back at some of the truly awful footballers who were signed to play for our club need to be forgotten about. Easy to see why we stayed here so long. Thank God for Chrissie Wilder. Not the Players fault they were signed and badly managed. Hopefully we've learned and moved on . I felt sick looking at these teams of disgrace.
