Cahill might not even make the bench.

I was sticking to the 'players I'd seen' and Hodgy was just a bit before my time, with the only other keeper I could recall who won loads was Andy Goram. I contemplated Cahill for Houston, but Houston was really a full-back. Couldn't think of a prominent player we had on loan at full-back apart from Paul Parker. As for the bench, apart from those mentioned above; Bruce Rioch, Ken McNaught deserve a place.

McGrath won only 3 medals... the FA Cup in 1985 with Man U and twice for Villa in League Cup. McNaught has the league champions medal in 1981, the European Cup in 1982 and the Super Cup for 1982-83 so McNaughts has the better medals

Agreed, SB. The deciding factor there was ability, at his peak he was the best of the four. If you want to argue for McNaught to be included rather than big nose I'm willing to discuss that.

wasn't brave enough to pick 11 so I thought of the best I'd seen overall and combined into "perfect players" where I could..... some not quite in position, but hey they'd be so good that wouldn't matter.

Interesting comment about Dave Powell, Silent. I did'nt realise he won 11 welsh caps and was Blades player of the season in 1969.
To be fair, I only started going regularly to the Lane halfway through the 70-71 promotion season, so I would only have seen him play a few times. (I suppose the same can be said of my 'keeper choice of Hodgy, but he was a legend, and I did'nt want to pick John Hope!)
Don't forget that Flynn played over 200 games for the Blades, the majority in the top flight, making a formidable partnership with Eddie Colquhoun at the centre of the defence. How we could do with such a duo now!

Powell was my first hero at BDTBL - I was young too when he was there and didn't see him that many times, - I started the with the odd game in 69-70 and was a regular for the 70-71 season.... but for some reason he stood out to me - partly as an imposing, shiny, athletic blonde figure, partly as an actual footballer.

I liked Flynn too, but my old man thought he was a bit lightweight compared with Colquhoun - I probably developed a "sympathy" on that basis and was always keen to spot good performances and point 'em out to Dad.

I started going regularly in January 1970 and at that time Powell was one of our top players along with Woody, Badger and TC (who had only played one England u23 match so far). Hodgy was still a popular and reliable keeper. Flynn was Arthur Rowley's last signing and during the 1969-70 season he was a reserve defender and played when Powell was injured. He played in the 1st game of the 1970-71 season (we lost 3-1 at Orient) and for the next game he was dropped along with Addison (reason for dropping Addison was that he had an argument with coach John Short). Flynn played only once (2-1 home win against Leicester on Boxing Day) for the first team in the next 8 months (even after Powell was ruled out for the rest of the season after the injury at QPR, Flynn wasnt brought back into the team until the 0-0 draw at Leicester on Easter Saturday). He did ok in the last 7 games of that season. He was good in the air and his positioning was good but didnt have much confidence in playing the ball to an outfield player , and irritated the crowd for often playing the safe option by backpassing to the keeper. He wasnt bad in the 1st half of the 1971-72 season before being dropped atfer the 2-2 home draw against Wolves (the previous week we lost 5-1 at Palace). Had Powell not been injured at QPR in March 1971 I am certain he would have been a 1st team regular for the next few years.

Hodgy had a poor game in the 3-3 home draw in Sept 1970 but after that was ok until the winter months when he started to let in soft goals and got more indecisive when coming out for crosses. Hope was a good signing and, apart from the 5-0 defeat at West Ham in Nov, played well for the rest of the 1971 year (got called up to the England u23 squad twice) but had a mare in the 5-0 defeat to Arsenal in Jan 1972 and then his confidence deteriorated

Always remember one game where he stuck the ball up the back of his shirt and none of the officials knew where it was. Ref called for a new ball and John cheekily slid it from up his shirt and rolled it off the pitch!
As you say, he later lost confidence and was never the same 'keeper again.

Pulled off the best save I've ever seen a keeper make in any game - against Birmingham City in the 70-71 season. It clearly intimidated the Brum strikers as they missed a penalty and and barely got a shot in after that... they probably thought they'd simply no chance of scoring past Hope.

It's a pity what happened to him because for a while he was the only keeper we've ever had that made me think "doesn't matter who/where we are playing, we're completely safe with John Hope in the net".

He had something which looked like a gonk that he put inside the goal for every game

I remember them getting the penalty not long after the incredible save and my Dad elbowing me: "Don't worry lad, they'll miss this!" I vaguely remember it being ballooned over the bar and my Dad elbowing me again: "Told you. That's cos of John Hope, they don't think they can get it past him".

As he made the incredible save earlier he sort of arc'ed back down from a horizontal mid-air flight to the ground, landing "ball and hands" first - it was just like an exaggerated drawing from Roy of the Rovers type comic strips with a "long curved body at full (bent) stretch".

Like the description of that save. Phil Summerhill missed the penalty but afraid I still dont remember it despite your description of the miss. I remember Reece's both goals but dont remember Woody's goal. I remember the crowd's reaction when the pavillion scoreboard revealed that Watford were winning 1-0 at Cardiff. There was a lot of cheering and I was looking at the players reactions despite that the game wasnt finished yet. Even Birmingham's Bob Latchford pointed at the direction of the scoreboard (probably Flynn or Colquhoun were wondering why there were some cheering)
