Yeah but they didn’t do such a great job when they sold us JOC for £300k

Indeed, not the first mistake they've made with a CB either, they let Mawson go for nothing. Also sold Tarkowski. They're quite a centre half factory, so that bodes well with Egan.

Some people are very quick to go on about how we undersold Brooks but then handily ignore the fact that Matty Phillips is valued at £15 million and Shaqiri went for £13 million.

Forgot Tarkowski was there. I completely agree with you on their scouting, all credit to them. For a supposedly small and less fashionable club they have had some excellent players. It’s not like there’s no competition down there for good young players either.

Think Sunderland.

Speculate to accumulate, I'm off to buy a million pound house this afternoon, the only way is up.

Can anyone lend me a million pounds as I seem to be a little short ? It's a guaranteed investment.

Every time, without fail, beyond doubt, with absolute unassailable copper-bottomed certainty, every last fucking time, bar none, without exception, you hear the phrase ‘speculate to accumulate’ you are listening to someone who wants to spend somebody else’s money...

Precisely the kind of ignorant attitude people have to modern football.

Are we going to ignore the fact that Wolves, Cardiff and Fulham spent huge money on wages and transfers to get promoted? You realise only 3 can go up, right?

Thats why you don't seem to realise 3 can go up. Yeah it works for 3 out of 24 in 3 tiers of the football league 62 teams out of 72 are disappointed every season, but look at villa if they got promoted the high risk wouldve worked. But they failed & nearly went of out business. Along with villa you have Middlesbrough, Derby, Sheffield Wed, QPR, Bolton, Sunderland, Norwich & Leeds. Who have all in recent years chased the jackpot only to suffer the consequences

I agree but this is the curse of SUFC. When have we ever had a boardroom that wasn't small time? Its obvious from the Court transcript that Brooks had to be sold to ensure the club was financed for the next 6 months. The owners tactically don't want to put their money in whilst the dispute is ongoing. What I can't my head around is why people continue to think that either of them is the solution moving forward.

I can help.

There is presently no other solution moving in any direction whasoever unless that queue of billionaires is snaking round the car park or the S2 financial gurus fancy a bit of ‘speculate to accumulate’. Well, there’s oblivion, of course...

Where is the queue for 'ambitious' owners to take over the club ?

There is only room in the Prem. for so many clubs, the only ones to make a profit, though only if well managed and with good luck - think Sunderland.

If you think your business model is so good, get your bid in.

The Sunderland example is poor. They are a big club and had a long established run in the Prem and are paying for guess what? Boardroom mismanagement, sound familiar. I will place a wager with you that Sunderland are back in the Prem before we are.

Shaqiri went for £13 million.

Again, relegation release clause.

And £15m is a lot for Phillips. He should cost less than Brooks. He's 27 now and looks to be stepping down to the Championship.

KM isn't and doesn't want to be, as for PA, I can only assume he has wealthy friends, family, contacts, backers, who he thinks he can bring in.

I still don't understand why he bought into the Belgian club.

Whether or not we’d be the end destination, or whether another club would be bought above us, owning a Belgian club is a way of getting non eu players into the eu. Predominantly Africans without international appearances, but also South Americans & south East Asians. Qatar own a club. After a couple of seasons, they can then be moved on, probably to us and then probably onwards again for profit. Similar to what red bull are doing, with Liefering, Salzburg & Liepzig. Everyone’s looking for the next naby keita.

Phillips is a 27 year old who has played over 300 games including being one of the better attacking midfielders in the Premier League two seasons ago. He's played in the Championship and starred. He's played for us and was far superior to Brooks.

You honestly believe that he's worth less than a lad who has only ever started a handful of games and mostly used as a sub in a decent Championship team?

Top draw idiocy.

Haha.

Why do you think Phillips is linked with a move to the Championship then, genius?

The only PL club strongly linked is Cardiff, who funnily enough also think £15m is far too much.

You seem blind to Brooks' talent, age and potential.

We'll see who's worth more in 12 months. Then we'll see who the idiot is, won't we.

It’s only because we can’t spend big money that people claim they don’t want to spend money. A way of attempting to save face because Wednesday have a bigger budget than us for the first time since the 90s.

Fuck what they are doing focus on United, we need to spend to improve, Wilder can’t keep shopping in League One and Two if we want to keep progressing and ultimately win promotion.

Actually, people say we don't spend big money because we don't have it. Not even the biggest McCabist would say they don't want to spend it. They may say they don't want the club to be in a financial mess but it's nothing to do with S6.

Another forum fallacy I'm afraid.

It seems toe that no one thinks that. Opinions are about who should come out on top now, with virtually everyone hoping whichever one does "win" they move us on to someone with real money ASAP .

I thought we were the only club who suffered mismanagement at board level.

Embarrassing listening to them
The club has done a right number on them lowering their expectations, and then every 15-20 years or so a "FAN" becomes manager and instills a bit of spirit into extremely ordinary players who then manage mid table respectability in the Second Division.
They then think they've won the World Cup and it's only natural for our best players to leave

Completely devoid of any ambition whatsoever and a dream supporter base for whichever idiot is running the club

And that means what?

A humble acceptance of how great Sunderland are. One can only be impressed with their progress in the last two seasons. Quite remarkable. I’m not sure whether they or Brentford are the best of the bestest so I’ll bow the knee to both.

Also sold Tarkowski.

Why is that a mistake?

It's hard to get proper transfer fees these days as everything is "undisclosed" but it's fair to assume they paid less than 100k and sold him for anything between 3.5 and 6 million. That's exactly what their business model is - buy undervalued players and sell as soon as they're overvalued. They've made some ridiculous profits on players in recent years, even if it's been detrimental to the team (because they can, in theory, replace with another cheap player with potential, who will also be sold when they become overvalued).

I can't think of any other club that is doing a better job in this sphere than Brentford and it's down to Benham's belief in, and talent for stats, as well as a degree of bravery in playing moneyball when everyone else would laugh at the idea.

Agreed. Scott Hogan - in for £750k, out for £12m. Jota - in for £1.1m, out for £6.5m. André Gray - in for £500k, out for £9m. Ryan Woods - in on a free, now valued at £5m+. Ollie Watkins - in for £1.8m, now valued at £8m+.

Even they don't always get it right though. They let Mawson go to Barnsley on a free and sold O'Connell to us for £250k while some of their bigger (relatively) signings haven't worked out (eg Bjelland £1.8m, Hofmann £1.2m)

No one always gets it right though. Never have and never will. It’s about getting the bulk of decisions right.
