An indication today both of how prices are appreciating and the potential gains you can make if you pick the right up and coming striker is how much Brentford want for Ollie Watkins. A player a number in here thought we should have been in for.

They signed him for £1.8m 12 months ago and he scored 11 goals last season in all competitions. The Evening Standard are reporting both Palace and Bournemouth are after him and Brentfords asking price is £15m.

This is why I'm hoping we either buy Gallagher or Marriott as the potential upside is huge with, admittedly, risks involved.

Im hoping prices will drop towards the end of the window. Clubs want to sell players and they'll panic just as much as the club's who want to buy players.

Off the top of my head, Brentford have received £9m for Andre Gray, £12m for Scott Hogan and £6m for Jota, making big profits in recent seasons. Looks like Watkins will be the next. Fair play to them for not dropping their pants when it comes to selling their best players.

They seem to buy well from abroad as well as the lower leagues. We should envy them at how good they are in the transfer market.

You have to speculate to accumulate. There are a lot of examples of players being signed for less than 3 million and being sold on for 8 figure sums. Problem is, we wont even stump up a 7 figure sum for any players. We are being left behind, and I’m sick to death of fans defending it by claiming they don’t want to ‘spunk moneh’ away.
Bore off, it’s the way things are done for success now!

Yeah ask Villa.

Precisely the kind of ignorant attitude people have to modern football.

Are we going to ignore the fact that Wolves, Cardiff and Fulham spent huge money on wages and transfers to get promoted? You realise only 3 can go up, right?

The reality is we won’t be spending big anytime soon. No point dwelling too much on that.

And you realise only 3 can go up Swansea,West Brom and Stoke is the counter argument, right ?

I don't think they are going to be short of a bob or two for the next 3 years. Pigs, Villa & Boro' are the counter argument.

It’s only because we can’t spend big money that people claim they don’t want to spend money. A way of attempting to save face because Wednesday have a bigger budget than us for the first time since the 90s.

Fuck what they are doing focus on United, we need to spend to improve, Wilder can’t keep shopping in League One and Two if we want to keep progressing and ultimately win promotion.

Yes Blade, he should do some of his shopping in Division One because the likes of Marriott could be the next big thing. But maybe we can't even afford the best players in Division One anymore ! This next 2 week's will tell us won't it ?

I don’t think many people would object to an owner injecting £12m a year for the next few seasons. I think what most people have an issue with is breaching FFP or having debts that are secured against the club. Because then it’s easy to get into a situation where if you don’t go up, you’re in big trouble. I’ve seen enough of the third division to last me a lifetime.

The problem is, neither of our owners seem to have that kind of money. And until this dispute is settled, nothing’s going to change.

How much did we pay for Billy this time round???, cos just going on last season, Jordon Rhodes was £10m(excuse me a second, it still makes my sides hurt as I laugh, when typing that!!), which would mean, our Bill must be worth £12-15m easily, wouldn't everyone agree??

All down to Matthew Benham. Clever (and now very rich) man.

Why don't we save these threads for the end of the transfer window when we know for sure that we lack ambition (aka money)?

What's a thread on striker price inflation for to do with 'lack of ambition ?

Apologies, I shouldn't have said thread: I was reffering to the string of comments after the OP.

I liked your observations on Ollie Watkins - signed from L2. I found it funny that 10 posts later we're told:

Wilder can’t keep shopping in League One and Two if we want to keep progressing and ultimately win promotion.

Think Sunderland.

Speculate to accumulate, I'm off to buy a million pound house this afternoon, the only way is up.

Can anyone lend me a million pounds as I seem to be a little short ? It's a guaranteed investment.

If you went to some I don’t sufc do’s Alan Knill states they wanted Ollie Watkins but couldn’t compete with Brentford at the time.

Brentford are a proper club though, they're not obliged to drop their pants when the big dogs like Bournemouth come calling.

If Brooks was at Brentford, they wouldn't have even considered what we accepted for him. They won't even consider the same amount for Chris Mepham. He'd still be their player and they'd have £20m+ to look forward to next summer. But us.... we'll take a scattered £12m thank you very much, despite Bournemouth having 57 MILLION to spend on a couple of World Cup players.

One advantage Brentford have of course is lacking an inherently small time pathetic ownership and boardroom.

Are people like Matthew Benham impossibilities for us? Aren't we overdue a bit of competence?

£15m is utterly absurd for Watkins by the way but you have to get with the times and ask for this sort of money, whether you want to keep the player or sell him.

The crazy inflation level should encourage us to spend. It has to be a well researched, targeted numbers game. You can spend £6m on three players and often it'll only take one of them to do well to be sat on more in asset value than the amount you spent.

I agree but this is the curse of SUFC. When have we ever had a boardroom that wasn't small time? Its obvious from the Court transcript that Brooks had to be sold to ensure the club was financed for the next 6 months. The owners tactically don't want to put their money in whilst the dispute is ongoing. What I can't my head around is why people continue to think that either of them is the solution moving forward.

KM isn't and doesn't want to be, as for PA, I can only assume he has wealthy friends, family, contacts, backers, who he thinks he can bring in.

I still don't understand why he bought into the Belgian club.

Where is the queue for 'ambitious' owners to take over the club ?

There is only room in the Prem. for so many clubs, the only ones to make a profit, though only if well managed and with good luck - think Sunderland.

If you think your business model is so good, get your bid in.

The figures below sound extreme, remember we are just one division below Liverpool, with a successful season we'd be competing with them next year, look what they're spending.

Liverpool spending in 2018:
Van Dijk: £75m
Keita: £53m
Fabinho: £40m
Alisson (soon confirmed): £66m
Total: £235m

Shit runs downhill, the market is full of over rated average players who are supposed to be worth £5-10m, the football world has gone mad!

That's not really a fair comparison though. They are trying to consolidate a place in the 'big 4' which means they have to spend big.

IF we got up, we'd be spending like Burnley, Uddersfield or (whisper it quietly) Bournemouth.

Say somewhere between £15m - £30m in total, taken from our new TV deal giving us an extra £100m.

We could always look abroad to find a decent value for money striker....oh wait

Everton want 18m from Liepzig for Lookman.

A player that hardly played for them after costing 7m.

Wonder how much they'd want for DCL?!

Yeah but they didn’t do such a great job when they sold us JOC for £300k
