Strange quiet atmosphere yesterday

It's all very well us complaining about the lack of atmosphere, but who amongst us actually does anything about it? Not me, that's for sure. I sit in the SS, sing the GCB before each half and that's about it (apart from the occasional swear word littered rants at either the team/player for giving the ball away cheaply or the ref). Other than that I'm intently watching the game, very nervously at the moment, not singing.

I take my hat off to any of you who get the singing going on the kop.
That just about describes me but I do find it difficult to join in GCB when the bloke next door to me talks through it! At away games when I'm generally surrounded by chanters I do notice a lot of their time is spent on mobile phones and I think this may contribute to the lack of atmosphere.

I also think being the underdog creates more atmosphere and usually it tends to be away fans who create most of it. I take the chant with a pinch of salt but whatever game you watch on TV, the away fans are often heard chanting "football in a library". I know it's a micky take, but there's often a lot of truth in it.

One sure fire way of recognising a lack of atmosphere/chanting is when someone, in desperation, starts up the "Sheffield United, Sheffield United"chant - which happened several times yesterday.

I wish I could make this go away but the last season in the Prem took a lot out of me. I can't bear another season like that. I really dislike that league, var, diving, big 6 bias etc.
Knowing that the prize for success is having to play in a league where finishing 17th is the best we can hope for. I realise that promotion is an absolute must this season or I fear the return of the wilderness years.
I like us to be winning games, as we are now, but the thought of another year of batting for our lives fills me with dread. What a conundrum.
I know I'm not on my own here and I'm sure it contributes a bit part in the lack of atmosphere this time around.
I hope I am very wrong and we go up and more than hold our own.

Agreed and I suspect this sums up how a lot might feel.

I have said on another thread that I honestly couldn't give a fuck about the PL. It's far too sterile and every conceivable odd seems to be stacked against you from minute one. VAR also seems to have made matters worse. It's quite incredible what we did in the first season up there under Wilder, all things considered.

But I also accept that getting there a couple of times per decade is a necessary evil now, if we want to be a force in this league, where the football is more competitive and enjoyable. Even if we come straight back down, it has to be worth the pain, simply for the financial boost and the exposure for the club.

Of course there is also the very distinct possibility that we get there this time, with a new owner who has the means to truly transform us and turn us into a PL regular and maybe push for better things than simply avoiding relegation. If that happens, I wouldn't complain either.

Agreed but I genuinely think the lane is as quiet as it gets, on odd occasions its ok but mainly its appalling
What gets me is how quiet it were yesterday before and after match it were like a wake for a funeral.

I think people are not bothered about us going up to the prem and the ongoing kop bollox.

Something seems strange there nowadays and I think above two reasons are sad factors.

Interesting that you mention VAR. And I agree with you. I watched the Forest highlights. They couldn’t celebrate a goal until VAR intervened. It’s not the same. Makes me wonder, has anyone consulted the fans in England? I sure if there was a mass vote - VAR or no VAR it would be scrapped.

And half the stadium were on their way out at 2-1 up, just before the third goal. Nobody seems to care anymore

A few were, but I wouldn’t say half. Mind you I stayed behind to clap the players off after last time. Not many did. Disappointing again. Maybe it’s those that we need to point the finger at. Did you catch the early bus? Don’t like seeing us win? Don’t like nervy performances? Don’t want your tea to be cold or in the dog?

Not very many clubs make any home noise anymore. Leeds are probably the best

I think you are correct as I’m fed up of hearing the football in a library song on TV.

It was bad but I will say the atmosphere starts in the kop so if you kill it on there you kill it in the entire ground

First 10 mins of the second half was particularly grim atmosphere, I thought. You could probably have heard my teeth chattering from all 4 sides of the ground. Hood up, gloves on, coughing my guts up, and still freezing, on a not especially cold day. I'm getting old. Time to invest in some thermal leggings before the Hull game. Damart here I come!

I actually think it’s been better on G&H recently. Not quite as good yesterday, despite the ‘banter’ with the Stoke fans, but there’s often a fair bit of singing and better than it was a few years back. Shame the rest of the stand/BLUT doesn’t join in.

Barely hear the Kop nowadays, but that’s probably because nobody other than back few rows joins in and it won’t travel.

I actually hope the Kop being unavailable for match day tickets persuades some people who may like to get the atmosphere going to sit in G&H (although minimal space/nobody best sit in my seat! 😉 ). Having an atmosphere by the away fans is the way it’s going for most clubs nowadays, rather than at a traditional Kop end.

We’re it just me or was it very quiet atmosphere yesterday?.

Quite quiet at times. Although some of our fans found their voice to tell BIlly how shit they thought he was.

You, me and thousands of others. We love the noise when it happens, but our nature( and perhaps age) negate joining in.

I'm 63 and join in all the songs. Get on your feet and sing Blades. Away atmosphere is better. You have 2-3 thousand fans who stand and really want to be there.

Maybe it's the general below par performances, even though we win. With the Premier League beconing we need to be one hell of a better team to avoid another dismal, disaster of a season that we had last time.

Quietest stadium in the league without a doubt. Gradually got worse and worse over the years.
Do you travel away? The lane is miles louder than other places. Exceptions such as Blackpool, Coventry, Stoke for a while. They were nice and loud at times this season. I didn’t go to Watford.

Have a look at some of the championship vloggers too. Most have BDTBL up there in the top few for atmosphere

I completely agree that it’s flat, but some of the places we go are silent.

Boring idiots aren’t they. At one point I could hear talking in the kop areas from tc stand

WTF To quiet

All football teams are the same at home, it is just sometimes a casual experience for fans.
The Stoke match for example wasn't a very entertaining match to watch despite the amount of goals in the game, so I wasn't surprised the atmosphere was quiet.
There needs to be entertainment to get fans excited, we want to see players running down the line and a driving crossing in, we want to see plenty of shots, strong tackles and positive plays ect.
The club could help improve the atmosphere by introducing singing areas. turning the music down ect.
I think some people are making a too much of a big deal about it and have unrealistic expectations of what to expect at football matches.

The atmosphere is what the police, stewards, Sheffield City Council and the safety executive have dreamed of for years

The fans sat quietly, in smaller numbers than they should be and the full sheet of tick boxes can be completed every week to justify their existence

This is true. Most places you visit these days has a block or two of fans that stand by the away fans and create an atmosphere. We haven’t had that since the G&H blocks were reopened.

Most of Roy’s View From’s include comments about how quiet the Lane is.

Majority of the noise we do make is just random chants
that don't make sense

Yesterday ... we're not going to Wembleyyyy - (despite being in the 4th round of the cup to a non league side)

or shit on the bastards below (wtf is that)

Can someone put the lyrics on here for the songs we make up
as I have no clue what they are singing (apologies I am getting old)

we need someone like Paul Heaton to make some songs up
- bit tricky with Ahmedhodzic / Bogle / Fodeingham etc

Up the Blades

There's this thread, although it doesn't seem to have caught on yet.

There's nothing strange about it. It's the end result of 30 years of deliberately attempting to gentrify football paying off.

That and the fact that every other cunt can't seem to watch a football match unless it's vicariously through a phone camera these days.
