Still in the hunt

United's search to strengthen the midfield and striker areas of the field continues although Kevin Blackwell reckons that he doesn't expect anything to happen in the next few days:
"I am fairly happy with what we've still got at the moment, but I still want a bit more competition up front
"We have one or two irons in the fire for a striker role but I want to make sure that anyone we do bring in is the right one - better than what we have -and that is never easy."
The United boss is aware of the clamour to bring in reinforcements following James Beattie's move to Stoke City but insists that it does not affect him adversely:
"I don't feel under pressure to do it but if I find the right one, we will definitely sign him. If I can't find him I will keep looking.
"I am not close to it at the moment but with Leigh Bromby coming in I have hopefully solved the centre-back problem that arose when Ugo Ehiogu was injured.
"We have some names of players we are interested in and I would like to prise one for each of the two areas if possible.
"Yes, I appreciate that I might have to spend big to get the right one but we bid for Leroy Lita even before James Beattie was sold which showed our ambition."

the lita/beattie comment at the end is to try and save some face

It is also a completely ridiculous statement given that we ended up selling Beattie when the deal to bring in Lita had hit the skids; which showed our lack of ambition (if applying the inverse to the statement).

I honestly wish that we would just say that we will not be commenting on any potential transfers until a deal is done.

Surely he is having a senior moment, we now have the least potent attack in the division

Sharp, Henderson and Webber, not going to have defenders quaking in their boots is it?

I hope I am wrong but I really do think a lack of goals is going to cost us

mmmmmmmmmm...........i try to believe everything that comes out of BDTBL but its hard !

I'm keeping mi gob shut until the 2nd Feb before i make judgement.
Until then no quips from me about lack of ambition, cheap as chips, same owd, never knowingly undersold, our terry the Blades Way e.t.c.

Even if Blackwell does think that the three which you have mentioned will fire enough goals to keep us in the play-off positions, Hendo and Webber are so injury prone that it would be a massive gamble to assume they will stay fit for the rest of the season.

I agree with him that there is no rush to bring anyone in but he does need at least one more striker in before the window closes in my opinion.

Yeah i thought the same when reading it too!

The same applies for outgoing deals too.

Nothing could have prevented the uproar caused be selling our best player in January for a meagre amount when we are in a strong position in the league.

We made a volitile situation into a roaring inferno by the statements and interviews conducted around BTDBL leading up to the sale of James Beattie.

I hope that we have learned a lesson from this fiasco and will conduct our business away from the public domain from here on in.

Its hard to see how we're going to persuade anyone quality to come here now when we appear to be on the down grade and players are already refusing to come. Thats got to ring alarm bells to any potential signings.

We have time and we have games we can win. By the end of the month we will be clear as to whether we are in a desparate panic or actually building on a solid base. If undefeated starts to become wins the world will change, BUT if it stays with draws we either put out the cash or settle for another championship year. I'll wilingly wait the month out.

By players, you mean one player who is currently at one of the three teams above us, who has just scored in his first game from returning from a loan spell. Likely to be part of a Premiership team next season, I don't think the sale of Beattie, or as you put it, "the down grade", would have influenced him to such an extent

...Only my humble though
