Stevens long term replacement

Great innit. I offer critique of Norwood and most everyone pisses their pants, including a 'be careful what you say because staff at the club read this site'.

Then we get an Enda Stevens is shit and needs replacing thread with all sorts of bollocks on it.

Do you have trouble understanding English?

I'm happy to leave it to the manager to decide when any player has outgrown his worth to the team.
What do we really know?
Opinions are fine but do people take them seriously?

Do you have trouble understanding English?

Yeah, I'm just conscious that the sensitive souls at the club who read this site avidly (like Norwood apparently) might take it to heart and top themselves or summat.

Good = goose

Good = gander

We need two viable options for each position - if you're playing well, you keep the shirt...if you're not, your replacement is given the chance.
At present, Enda hasn't got any genuine competition (maybe Osborn, but he's had to be deployed elsewhere).
There will be those who advocate playing players back into form, but there comes a point when players need some time out of the starting line-up to re-assess, rest and re-set. At present we haven't been able to do this with Enda.
Add to this how key our wingbacks are to our style of play and we've got a genuine issue.

Norrington-Davies?

It's clear we need to have the ability to rest Enda. He's had a bad spell the last couple of seasons and that must be down to tiredness. He plays every game, not getting any younger and plays in an extremely taxing position.

The perfect solution would be to sign a younger player who can gradually take over the roll. Not sure how good RND is.

Back to the OP, I’d say that they time to look at replacing Enda is when he’s losing his pace (a major part of his game), he’s still fast as fuck so let’s give him a year or 2 first. Never too early to contingency plan though.

RND is a player, definitely. But L1 relegation scrap to Prem is a big old step...
If he's got the potential and CWAK think he is the heir to Stevens I wouldn't be averse to sending him to Rotherham or somewhere next season and having someone like Schlupp come in and compete with Enda for a year
Schlupp has gone from CF to LW to LB! Apart from not being able to defend for toffee, why would you bring his name up?

I said it the first game after lockdown. These lads 👽👽👽were so impressed with his tekkeroonies this season that they abducted him to the mother ship, and cloned him. We got the copy, and he is struggling to get close to the the same standards of his maker. The classic nature/nurture debate in living action.

The true (brainwashed) Enda is now ripping it up in the Alpha Centuri A League.

He won the PL complimenting Fuchs as LB, he's not particularly bad.
It was brought up in Rumour Mill, I think it's a good shout for cheap

Fuchs barely missed a game! When he played he played LW. What makes you think he’d be cheap? Is his contract up?

Wilder will know who has reached the end of the road,if he wants to evolve the team with better (thats always been his aim) then he will.

Wilder mentioned "max" last nite,he wants it every game, trouble is lots of the players could be burning out having functioned at 120% for a long time now,Wilder said we did not make a tackle until the 92nd minute (was that Flecks good tackle on Ndidi that got a booking).

When you are tired bodily and mentally its hard to function doing anything, nevermind pro football.

Stevens has been, and still is, brilliant and will no doubt be our first choice for another season or two. Not seen enough of RND to judge how realistic him sticking around might be. It’ll be hard finding a long term replacement.

He’s not exactly playing much at Palace is he?
Who would you suggest then, since we obviously need competition for Enda

That the same Robinson who was signed as back up to JOC and hasn’t played LWB? He’s played LB, but not LWB. He is quite obviously not as good as Enda. Bit of a silly suggestion

Your eyes must be painted on mate. Liverpool’s youngest ever debutant at 16 as a left back. Played CB, LB & LWB regularly for qpr and Fores.

Just a bit of a dip in form since the restart IMO, seem to remember he had one before in the Championship, think it was in that first season with us, don't think it lasted long. He'll be reyt for a while yet I think.

Good attacking full backs are at a premium, especially left footers. They are also flavour of the month for top clubs. Look at the Liverpool lads and Traore at Woves.
We are not really in a position to buy PL challengers for back up players. Ends probably needs a rest is all. Still lots of football in him.
Baldock is only 27 so less rush to back him up.
RND is a good shout and doesn’t hurt our budget. No need to panic just yet. Let Wilder do the juggling.

Not being reactionary after yesterday,

Whenever anyone starts a sentence like this I think it's a sure sign that it's part of the reason they are saying it.

Anyhow...

I'd put it like this.

Stevens was rubbish v Leicester. He would have been my choice to come off at half-time. I'd have moved Osborn to left back and played Fleck in his natural position at left midfield. I think that was probably the only substitution required at that point in the game. That and a stern talking to that more substitutions would quickly follow if we didn't buck our ideas up and start making the ball stick a bit better - and passing to our own players rather than passing it to theirs.

I think the three half-time substitutions were a mistake by Wilder. Bless him, he hasn't made many - but I'm saying what I think and here's why I think it...

Although Didzy wasn't having his best game he at least is the type of player who can "nurse the ball" a bit in a situation where we are letting it loose like it's a hot potato. He'd have stayed on for me. The Berge v Lundstram debate will rage on for as long as people see them as being midfield competitors I suppose (or until we cash in Lundstram - which I think we really should). They do at least have one thing in common - both are capable of great moments of skill and technique and even longer periods when they simply don't exert themselves on the game. I'm not sure swopping one for the other made any noticeable difference. And as for Moose...well...I really wouldn't rely on him to change a game. He reminds me of one of my old Scalextric cars. There's a very sudden and short burst of energy, then it's spun off the track and nothing comes of it. Normally it takes me a while to get to really like a player, I'm sceptical at first, but in his case it's the other way round. I really liked him at first and now I'm getting more sceptical as I see more of him!

Back to the main point of your post - and I think the thing is we need to be looking to strengthen in depth in every single position on the park. Every one. At least we do have the option of Osborn for that left back, left wing half role - and he looks a good one. But the squad lacks quality in depth. We've achieved an awful lot based on effort, teamwork and organisation. Now is the time to add some quality to it. It costs money though and much more money than we've spent on anyone so far.

In both matches v Leicester I've been really impressed with this guy...

Youri Tielemans.

He was all over the park in both games. Winning tackles, linking up play, laying off some beautiful inch perfect passes, just running the whole midfield by himself tbh! He's just 23 years old. In 2019 Leicester paid Monaco £40M for him. (He's probably worth double that now).

That's the kind of money (£40M) that we will have to pay to pick up a "promising" not "proven" international standard midfield player on the continent. And that's the type of quality we need to be adding to this squad, if we want to push on from here.

If we get the recruitment right then we'll be looking back in 12 months time at this current team and appreciating them for what they are. In fact, we'll be amazed at what they've achieved because they've done absolutely fantastic for us - without being blessed with players of Tieleman's cost or quality.

Mate - there you go y' see..."Cheap".

Let me tell you and any other "Sheffielder's" that are reading this about "Cheap".

"Buy Cheap - Buy Twice".

That's what you get for "cheap".

We need to add "Quality".

Quality doesn't come cheap.

We're now talking about centre forwards are we? They are the least "cheap" of all.

Go get Mitrovic from Fulham if we want a good centre forward who can lead the line, score goals and scare the shit out of defenders. He'll cost about £60M though! 🤔

We have a finite budget this season apparently and we have a lot to spend it on... is left back a priority or scoring goals and creating chances?

My #1 choice would be Jamal Lewis but he would not be cheap. At all.

Have you actually seen him play? 🤣
He’s nothing like competition for Enda. He couldn’t perform that LWB role the way we need it performing. Hence why Enda hasn’t yet missed a minute despite his poor form.

If you think Robinson is up to it but Schlupp wouldn’t be I question your sanity.

So what if he’s Liverpool’s youngest debutant? What’s that got to do with anything?

Enda Stevens is brilliant.
Can control ridiculous cross field balls. Can cross, can chip in with goals and can keep up in one of the most physically demanding positions in our team. Some of his skill you would expect to see from a out and out winger.

We would be very lucky to find a better player and not even in our top 5 priorities to replace.

Of course it will be hard, no one said it would be easy did they?
But we need competition there now so if we can afford it why not invest in Stevens long term replacement rather than getting someone there purely incase he gets injured?

Christ above, nobody is saying to replace him now. Nobody 😂

But the complete loss of form post lockdown and lack of options to replace him shows something is missing from the squad.

Planning for the future isn’t a crime.

Planning for the future isn't a crime no. But given that will be endas spot for a long time yet, and that we have good cover in the form of Osborn I can't see finding a long term replacement high on the priority list.
