Is Phillips a statement of intent, or just a waste of money?

too late for this season… probably

But. Wilder is a master at ‘something to prove’ signings

Had we not signed anyone the doom mongers would be calling the board out

Biggest takeaway, they’re backing Wilder and have given up on the AI signing bollox

I think they mean business but they put full faith in the management. The clearly know absolutely nothing about football but are happy to open the chequebook when asked. The only worry is the blind faith signings (Matos, McGuiness) could do with someone vetting them to prevent it happening again. The best signing we could make would be an experienced DoF.

What happened to the ex Bournemouth guy that was involved in the takeover?

Undecided.

Sacking Wilder and some of the summer business were big mistakes, and signing Phillips (most likely Rothwell too) for me is just the start of making up for those mistakes.

It will be interesting to see how they go about any potential business in the summer, hopefully having learned from their mistakes.

In terms of pedigree and quality it’s a statement of intent.

Financially, unsure. Imagine city are being generous in terms of helping with his wages.

He genuinely might not be costing much more than a run of the mill championship loan.

Far too early, see how he performs on the pitch, this isn’t a normal signing, Man City are giving him to us to put in the window for a summer sale, it’s upto the player to perform, West Ham’s coaches said he was lazy and uninterested when he was on loan there and Pep called him fat, on top of that when he was at West Ham and Ipswich he was prone to mistakes leading to goals/penalties and sendings off along with injuries…. Having said all that, Wilder is something of a master when it comes to turning players careers round and upping performances, see Coutts, Sharp and Didz as just three examples. So who knows.
Personally I hope I’m wrong but I can see him becoming a Ravel Morrison, remembered for a good spell with Leeds and flopped after a big move, the kind of footballer that comes up in conversation in 10 years time, “what happened to Kalvin Phillips?”

I get the point about why spend loads chasing a forlorn play off hope, but there's also a need to stave off any possibility of sliding back the other way.

Football can be a cruel game, at times, and many a club has been relegated due to a ridiculous sequence of bad luck. Take our recent run of injuries and suspensions. If that were to pan out for the rest of the season, we would be in trouble. At the very least, we've taken steps to minimise that risk, however unlikely relegation might seem today.

After all, we support the only club to be relegated with a positive goal difference, in any of our life times!!

I remember Ravel playing 40 plus times for England as well so I see the similarities.

well the signings today tell me wilder hasnt given up on top 6
And neither should he.

We're only three wins in a row from potentially being within one result of being 6th.

Whether you feel it's unlikely or not, throwing the towel in in our position would be unprofessional, let alone a bit pathetic.

Ravel Morrison?

Wasn’t actually capped for England senior team. Has <10 appearances for the England Youth teams and 20 odd caps for Jamaica.

Compare to Philips who’s played for England 30 odd times.

I’m surprised by the signings, it’s clearly too late this season now, 2 new midfielders needing to gel, could disrupt the team, so not only is it late, they’d need to hit the ground running, the big test will be summer, that’s when we’ll find out what the owners intentions are.

Not a fan of the Phillips signing tbh.

The rest I see logic in.

I wouldn't say any of them are a huge statement of intent. Only rothwell likely to be here in 6 months time

I meant the whole wasted talent scenario, a bit like how people go on about Gazza wasting his talent. I’m not slagging off his prowess on the pitch, I’m reading into the West Ham coaches comments a bit too much maybe but for coaches to come out and say he’s lazy and uninterested it rings alarm bells for me. Like I say, Wilder is the perfect manager to wobble his head back on track because there’s a player in there definitely

One thing is for sure, despite all the speculation, none of us have a fecking clue about the wealth they may or not have .

Really happy with the business we have done this month. Definitely a mark of intent, or at least proof that the coffers are not dry and the owners are still able to back the manager.

I think we are a now just a quality winger short of having the best squad in the league, but we are still very strong.

still very much a long shot though davalon but its part of the way of getting this summers promotion pushing squad together 2 strikers a winger centre back and keeper needed before kick off in august

Gazza was one of the best in the history of the game. Ravel Morrison just had Rio Ferdinand tell us how good he was in training. It couldn't be any more different.

CAA have done well out of us, some players in the shop window looking for moves in the summer.
