It was great to see Sam McCallum receive one today, following his substitution. One of those players where we've only come to appreciate his true value when the chips are down.
Recently though, I can't help but notice how cheaply they are given out, with bang average performances (or worse) rewarded by people standing to applaud when a player is substituted.
Some sort of convention required along the following lines?
Standing Ovation = Goal scorer, assist, affected the game, put a real shift in. 7 out of 10 or better.
Polite, seated applause = Largely did the job expected of them. No major errors or positive influence on the game. Left the field due to flagging energy levels, tactical reasons. 5.5 to 6.5 out of 10.
Indifference/no acknowledgement or applause = Poor performance, game affecting errors, lack of effort.
Nothing to be gained from booing, by the way. Confidence has always been a big factor, in football, and it's at its most fragile in the minds of players in a relegation dogfight.
