Worst Ever Performances at the lane

Today's over all performance wasn't anywhere near as bad as many I've seen.

However, we made three appalling mistakes for their goals.

The initial set up and subs were poor imho but whilst the bigger picture clearly isn't good enough, I actually thought we looked better going forward than we have in most.

I suppose what I'm saying is, there's much to be concerned about at present but in my 40 odd years watching us, I've seen many worse perfirnances than today.

The comparisons of today’s game with the woeful premier league season seem silly. In that season we genuinely looked two divisions below the standard of every team we faced - every player looked miles beneath the standard of every opposition player. We couldn’t get from our keeper to the halfway line without losing the ball. We looked like conceding from every single attack (and sometimes did). We regularly had about 20% possession, sometimes 1 or 0 shots on target, and conceded 5, 6 or 8 goals repeatedly.
Today we played in a fairly similar manner to the way we’ve played over the whole of 2025, but made two errors (Peck’s misplaced pass, and nobody attacking the corner), and were on the wrong end of a dubious penalty decision.
I think there were two slightly below average championship sides on display, and they did a little bit better than us and 3-1 flattered them a bit. I don’t think it was the worst performances I’ve ever seen.

There’s no excuse in my assessment.
We made basic mistakes today that cost us the points.
We are a lower-level championship side with a squad that is nothing to write home about.
Our target is now getting enough points to stay up.

My statement that is ‘wasn’t the worst performances I’ve I’ve ever seen’ wasn’t an off-hand way of saying it was a decent performance: I just literally think there have been some worse performances in the last 50 years at Bramall Lane.

What about the 0-5 v Oldham in January 1988? Billy McEwan's last game. Blades fans were chanting "Woah, you're shit, AHH!!" when our keeper Andy Leaning, who later became our goalkeeping coach, took a goal kick.
I don't think anyone who was there was in any doubt at the end of the game that McEwan's time was up.

The 1-0 defeat to Burton Albion was pretty spineless too, even though it was only 1-0.

People forget how bad that game was because it was in amongst plenty of other horror shows.

It was the worst I’ve ever seen. Players openly displaying their desire to be anywhere but on that pitch.

I’d add the game that cost Billy McEwan his job. Was it Oldham?

Yes i think that was the worse of the lot, I dont count Premier league games in recent seasons as the behind closed doors games were a charade that shouldn't count and the last time we were there the club gave up when we got promoted. Although letting 8 in at home was a stain on our history.

We got turned over in Adkins season by Shrewsbury which was bad.

Must've been the only time the kop did sing cos I didn't hear a thing from them all afternoon. Not much to shout about admittedly but the atmosphere was terrible.

There was plenty of singing around me but I admit it started flat, I mentioned it in ShoutBox.

It’s all subjective and of course depends on how long you’ve been going.

Me, since just before we got relegated to the fourth.

I’ve seen highs, and some really grim lows.

Met some great people too

Today was as bad as any performance in recent years including EPL.. at least in the EPL, we were there.

There is no other way to look at this and say that I see NO signs that we can pick up this crappy season and stave off relegation.

If we lose on Tuesday, that's it, we aren't coming back to save this season.

Some of the signings have been horrendous...

toledo
Absolute bollocks.

As others have said, yesterday wasn't even the worst performance of the season. I assume you didn't watch the Ipswich game?

I'm not Wilder apologist, but this 'woe is me' attitude from our fans is ridiculous.

Lose Tuesday, We aren't coming back? Bed wetting drivel.

Grow a pair of bollocks and stop wanking each other off with each others tears.

I think it was before then.

Probably early eighties.

There were two kids who had brought a bucket of putty onto the almost deserted kop, and we're balling it up, and throwing it at players.

It was December and snowing.

I wondered what the F**k am I doing here.

A lot like today - minus the putty and snow.

What a thoroughly depressing day (then and now)
Used to love the smell of putty, proper putty sniffer. Leaves the coke sniffers standing.

In the Adkins season we conceded 4 at home to Shrewsbury and 3 at home to Bury, plus the pathetic last day defeat to Scunthorpe. Yes things are bad at the moment but they been much worse not that long ago.
So , we're not as shit as we have been at times in the past ...
Is that supposed to be encouragement ? 🤣

Yep. I think that one is hard to argue against.

I think the second half disaster against Millwall on 28th March 1981 was pretty dreadful. 2-0 up at half time and we end up losing 3-2. In the context of the season at that time I think that was a priceless 2 points thrown away. If we had won that match I really don't think we would have gone down. But we didn't and we only won one of our remaining 8 games.
And of course there was the 3-2 home defeat to already relegated Fulham in April 1968, after being 2-0 up in the second half. However, I would put the Millwall game ahead of that one because it led to us sinking to depths never before experienced by this club.
