It was great to see Sam McCallum receive one today, following his substitution. One of those players where we've only come to appreciate his true value when the chips are down.

Recently though, I can't help but notice how cheaply they are given out, with bang average performances (or worse) rewarded by people standing to applaud when a player is substituted.

Some sort of convention required along the following lines? 😜

Standing Ovation = Goal scorer, assist, affected the game, put a real shift in. 7 out of 10 or better.

Polite, seated applause = Largely did the job expected of them. No major errors or positive influence on the game. Left the field due to flagging energy levels, tactical reasons. 5.5 to 6.5 out of 10.

Indifference/no acknowledgement or applause = Poor performance, game affecting errors, lack of effort.

Nothing to be gained from booing, by the way. Confidence has always been a big factor, in football, and it's at its most fragile in the minds of players in a relegation dogfight.

No one has deserved a standing ovation this season, not one single player or Managerial staff inclusive of today.
It just shows how far this club has fallen when a player that was hardly used last season for good reason (in a not too different squad) is suddenly getting praised. Has Sam magically turned into Roberto Carlos or has the group just dropped off a cliff?
We have the 4th biggest wage bill in the division, this isn't on Ruben Selles, it's on the past/current/past/current manager and the legacy he set and now can't seemingly fix.

Do you not give a player a standing ovation if they have put in a good performance then? Sounds like that a player has to be of high quality to get one.
Not if they have put in a good performance regardless of that.

Also your last paragraph is odd. Yes we have a high wage bill for this division.
But how can you pin the situation and the squad that we have on him when 12 players were signed this summer without the current manager being here?

This summer was a car crash in so many ways. And I don't just mean because we sacked wilder. The board didn't have a scooby of what to do next other than hire Selles. It's also clear that Selles training this pre season did not get many of the players conditioning up to the required levels too. Is this still Wilders fault?

Yes, let’s not forget this isn’t on Wilder not his signings
But also let not forget Wilders contribution last January and the big bag of shyte that he fetched in

If memory serves me correct last Jan the only one still here is T.Cannon.

Holding didn't play enough. Clarke wasn't that good for us. Choudhury was good and I reckon Wilder would have gone back in for him this summer. I think he will in January again.

We really did need another CB though. Would have been good to have signed 2 Holding and another.

I thought he deserved a good round of applause - maybe not a standing ovation but I think that just reflect the over reaction, both negative and positive we see these days.
I'd rather see an OTT round of applause than an embarrassing booing of a former player for little reason than they just moved on

I’d say 7.5 out of 10, rather than 7. The score can be determined by a nominated sub-committee representing the crowd, meeting every ten minutes or immediately following the announcement of the substitution, whichever is sooner. Each member of the Committee has one vote, submitting a score between 0 and 10. A mean and median will be reported, and the decision for the crowd to offer a standing ovation would be determined by both averages equaling or exceeding 7.5. In the event that a member of the Committee wishes to appeal the decision, this can be submitted anonymously and in writing to the Chair, who will call a re-vote. For the second vote, the highest and lowest votes will be discounted, with the mean and median then being calculated as normal. The decision will be final. The outcome shall be communicated via the Fourth Official’s board.

January was a bit up and down in terms of our recruitment, like you said about Holding not playing enough.

Would CW have signed Choudhury or was the Jimmy Dunne deal proof that we wouldn't have signed Choudhury.

Clarke got injured not long into his loan, with Seriki and Gilchrist injured at the same time which resulted in Choudhury moving to RB.

BBD looked unfit and did get a few goals/assists but was played out of position due to Hamer playing LW.

As for needing CB's this summer, we signed enough of them (Bindon, Godfrey, Tanganga, Zätterström, McGuinness and Mee), but only 3 of them are playing regularly.

Two of them (Bindon and Godfrey) aren't playing for different reasons, while another (Zätterström) has yet to experience English football and would probably benefit from a loan just to get him up to speed.

Standing ovations are up to the individual fan to be fair, what I can't understand is why we have to do a lap of honour every home matches it's not like we've won anything

On the other hand,if we aren't shown appreciation for the extra effort we make, aren't we more inclined to give in.

I know I do.

We're crying out for some leadership and the lad's put his head above the parapet a few times lately.

How else are we to show our appreciation ?
Send him thankyou cards🙏

The decision is final? You mean it's not subject to a VAR check?

One of the strangest standing ovations I've ever seen was at the Blackburn Rovers Beamback in 1993.

Dane Whitehouse was substituted and the South Stand rose as one to applaud him off.
He had made a surprise comeback 5 months after breaking his leg.

I've either got the date wrong or the player, but it did happen. Old age has definately crept up on me 😂😂😂

He also put in the best cross of the game. On the run, just out of the keeper’s zone, right between the sticks. His confidence is high, he’s playing well and deserves a nod.
Yes he’s playing well

Keep it up my friend

Supporters supporting? It’ll never catch on!

(P.s. I’ve been going for over 30 years and standing to applaud a player substituted off has usually been the norm)

Standing ovations for a player getting injured, has always seemed a bit strange to me. In some instances, I can see it for example going above and beyond but if you go down after tweaking your hammy doing nothing, it seems a bit of a strange custom to applaud them off the pitch, like cheers you have costed us a sub, we have to reshape and you might be MIA for 6 weeks
