My parents came from a generation (& location) where they had to rely on charity for healthcare & the like. I discussed it with them often. And it sounded awful. "We" made great steps forward to make sure we had greater security across society. And of course, with the recent Furlough Scheme correctly placing many more people on benefits & welfare we continue to have (some) of that underpinning now. But, my basic concern remains - people having to rely on charity, for food, in 2020, seems a backward step to me

Absolutely. I'm happy to pull back on P. But, still feel strongly enough to say - kids down my street having to rely on charity to eat - seems wrong to me.

I take that point. May I ask, what do you think we should do to change the minds of the people who can make foodbanks unnecessary? (Genuine question, not point scoring, although I am good at that.....)
For eg, what if we gave £10 to foodbanks, and tried to use the remaining £4.99 to change minds.

I have sympathy with Phil’s view and we have discussed it before. My view for what it’s worth is that this gesture is a good one and is a way to make our point while aiding a worthwhile cause at the same time. Whether there should be a need for charities in this day and age is a good debate but the reality is that that is where we are currently and until that changes to not fund what they do in the forlorn (in my view) hope that that will bring about change is naive and leaves more people to suffer. I don’t view it as a salve to my conscience but instead a way of indirectly taxing myself to help others when I can afford to do so.

I hate food banks. I hate the fact they’re necessary. I’m not a communist, I don’t believe everyone should have the same but I do think that in a modern western society people shouldn’t be so skint they can’t afford basic food. I still put food in them, because people need to eat now and my good intentions and words won’t make a meal.

I have NO capacity for retaining information like that. I am unashamedly a digger into resources. I don't think our first team played any post 73/74 or pre 74/75 season fixtures on English non league grounds (ie Summer 74). The CBF Records do not show the Reserves playing any games on non league grounds either.
Tell me I'm wrong, or give me a clue as to the nature of the game. (Do not fucking tell me it was played to raise funds for a foodbank)

Charity, well intentioned though it may be, allows those with power (Government) to opt out of providing essential services (end of life care) and allows the wealthy to continue shovelling millions into off shore accounts.

Edit: The "wealthy" include Sheffield United players.

What is so disturbing are the thousands of tons (literally) of food that is wasted by people and retailers every year.
I don’t know what can be done to stop that, but if it could be diverted to food banks at least then there would be enough for all.

I'm for everyone making their own choices. I won't hear a word against anyone who makes a donation. I chose a different path. For instance I worked on the UK Overseas Aid effort during the Ethiopian Famine Crisis. I also worked in Education for a lot of my career. I was proud to think I was doing my bit to improve the life chances of kids in this country.
I prefer to "donate" to campaigns trying to change things. I overpay Taxes & National Insurance as I believe the State should provide an adequate safety net & I can afford it. I'm for everyone making their own choices. But, fair question. I would never personally donate to a foodbank.

Don't want to be rude, but overpaying your taxes and NI won't help anybody.
The political choices made render your tiny donations meaningless.
You personally will get far better "value for money" by donating to small, local charities.
I honestly believe that food banks are a fantastic example of small local charities and offer more direct and useful help than any other I can think of.
And by the way, fantastic that you actually took part in overseas charity work - I never had the bottle to do anything like that!
