Look. I don't mind being rude. I do alright. Haven't worked since I was 51. Live the life of Riley. Every leg up I've had in life has been through State Intervention. Free School Milk to get me going. Vaccines & jabs to keep me safe. Committed teachers to motivate & nurture me. Financial support & fees paid to get my qualifications. Secure employment. Quick & free at point of use health care when I've been struggling. I'm the opposite of a self made man. I'm a state made man. Every leg up. And many of them. I feel like the luckiest bloke alive. Puts a smile on my face everyday. Rudely - I fucking believe passionately in State Support, because....me.

My wife did a small amount of voluntary work at Fare Share. They can speak for themselves. But it's basically rescuing food that would go to waste & channeling it to foodbanks. I provided her with a tremendous amount of support. (That is, I bought her the steel toe cappers she'd need to work in the warehouse - I'm good like that)

Exactly right, jobs galore on leaving school, many in town halls, NHS, Gas Board, Water Board, Steel Works or even Pits.
And to cap that, choices of decent council houses or truly affordable mortgages.

It really was the best of times

I am rubbish at remembering matches this century! If McAlister hadnt broken his leg again at Altrincham then I would have completely forgotten about that match.

The CBF had to deploy all our research resources on that one. One guy had the game on his radar as he'd never ticked Rochdale. And he remembered his contact at the club phoning him with some urgency to say it'd been switched on the day to an afternoon game at Accrington. So, he couldn't make it as he was at work. Once he dropped that bombshell years later, one of the CBF knew a Rochdale fan who collects programmes. So, we got him to trawl the relevant Rochdale first team programmes with reserve match reports in them. To finally confirm it as played at Accrington. We have yet to find a Utd supporter who was actually at the match
 



I’ve donated, but like others here I hate the reasons that we have charities. Money that should come from the public purse is instead cajoled from those who feel sympathy, empathy, guilt, or whatever else.

It won’t stop me giving but I do hate that people are reliant on the good will of others when it should be the duty of the country to provide either help or a better system that means charitable donations to keep essential services running are a thing of the past.

Well put. Sums up the argument well. Whilst, like many, happy to give money to charities, it is effectively a regressive tax.

Alf Tupper were in the "Victor" comic weren't he plus a couple of others before and after I think.
I remember him drilling holes in his bike frame to make more lightweight...for his training, or am I thinking of another character.

That’s Alf from the Victors Tough of the Track. Used to diet on fish-n-chips after training as a runner
