Squad reshape this summer

At this rate we're probably playing Burrows LW, Seriki RW and Sasnauskas no10.

At the end of this window - as it’s too late now - I’d be sacking Bettis for negligence. He is the 1 constant over several seasons - but mostly the last 12 months have been a disaster in respect to ins/outs of players. He may be a nice guy - but he’s simply done a crap job & in most businesses he’d be dismissed.

He's clearly great at the commercial side, as is seen by all these commercial partners that are announced. He reminds me of Ed Woodward, good at these commercial deals, but an absolute calamity in the transfer market.

My only concern is that we lack depth across those forward attacking positions behind the striker - LW (no one, now Hamer has left?), only O'Hare in the CAM/#10 and Chong/Donovan are unproven entities at the lane in the RW.

I'd like to see Oné get a chance across those three positions, as well as in the CF (and as part of a duo). I'd be intrigued to see if Blaster can play a role in the #10 as after Hamer, he is the smartest player we have IMO, in terms of being able to play between the lines and pick a pass. That would take him out of the more intense hard yards of CM, ask him to do less running and avoid being the tackles as much.

Donovan one wing (wish it was Brooks, but still) and Oné on the other could be fun, if not unpredictable, if we had the balls to play it. Otherwise, I'd like to see Johnstone from WBA or Cleary from Barnsley come in.

Burrows on the LW would be a good shout been saying it for ages

No way we'll sign 6 players but I do feel like it's needed for depth. Is it 5 loans we can have in a squad?

I can’t we that at all.

It will more likely be three:

Souttar
Phillips
Clarke

Something like that I’d imagine unless we do get a genuine offer for Cannon and Wilder goes for a different type of forward.

At this rate we're probably playing Burrows LW, Seriki RW and Sasnauskas no10.
To be fair, Burrows is too good to be leaving out. Depending on how the window fares then I’d certainly look into playing him there in certain games.

He has good delivery. His build up play is decent. He can score goals. It removes the main failing of Gus that he didn’t always help out his full back consistently.

If McGuiness is still surplus to requirements, I would be shocked if we don't sign 2 CBs, assuming 1 is Souttar. Otherwise we go into a season with only Baptiste as genuine CB cover and will then be relying on McCallum and Doherty as stop gaps.

Beyond that I think you are probably right. I would love us to replace Gus and also bring in a proper LW, but suspect it's 1 out, 1 in for that position now. And unless we lose another striker, we probably go with the 4 that we already have. The positive is hopefully that One gets more opportunities this season.

The season before last he was too good to leave out, he was poor last season. McCallum way ahead of him if he’s back to fitness.

I can't see we land all three, and the phillips one makes less and less sense the further we go as CM is one of the few places we actually have depth.

I think if McGuinness & Zatterstrom go then Souttar comes in, and we desperately need some wingers/wide forwards like Clarke/Cleary/Abdulmalik

Do we need Phillips?we are well stocked in this position, though some may not be very good, I'm not so sure Phillips would be that much better.
I suppose over a 46 game season there is the niggling concern that Jairo had fitness issues, Arblaster just coming back from a lay off, you don't have 100% reliability in there.

You could shove others in there if we are short like Burrows or O'Hare or Chong (when fit again) but I can imagine he might want some insurance there.

I don't totally disagree your point by the way. That's just how I think it will be seen.

KMC-1889 I think something like that would be our first picks. Not saying we get them. It sounded like we'd missed a few targets already.

My overriding point was more than I can see 2-3 coming in. Can't see as many as 6, unless we entertain sales of players we'd like to keep.

I think the challenge is the number of games at this level. If we are playing 4-2-3-1 then in principle I would be fine to simply take the money for Cannon and stick with Bamford, One and Campbell. That's 3 for one spot. Or still 4 for 2 if you include O'Hare and the no 10 role.

The concern is that both Bamford and Campbell have had injuries or fitness concerns so lose one and suddenly you look weak.

That's another reason why there must be an attraction to Ben Brereton-Diaz as he can play both LW and CF. He also does gets goals and assists. he isn't a player that jut wracks up minutes without producing outcomes. Whoever we get as that option on the left, it has to be someone who troubles the scoreboard.

I think Burrows also becomes our main set piece taker in the absence of Hamer.

Ideally, I would like to see us in for:

2 x CBs, of 1 x CB if we are confident to include Baptiste.

1 x LW, or someone for the forward options. Cleary from Barnsley or Johnston from WBA.

Sell Cannon, sign Bim Pepple. Go with a regularly rotated forward four of Bamford, Campbell, Pepple and Oné to share the load in the absence of Hamer's creativity and to keep legs fresh. Also use Oné in the three (LW, CAM, RW) behind the the CF when setting up that way.

To me, that's 3 signings and using funds wisely and for players with a resale value in a SCR world.

Bettis doesn't choose the players he tries to get them over the line! Does a difficult job well. I don't see the anger at him, doesn't make decisions but carries out the hard bit which he does very well in my opinion.

I think it will look something like this;

Cooper
Seriki Tanganga Souttar Burrows
Jairo Blaster
Donovan O'Hare Loan
Bamford

I think Peck is yet to go and that will come to fruition over the next 5-6 days.

I think Seriki has potential to go, but is too raw for a strong offer and if you consider income from Hamer, Brooks and Peck we will probably be near where the finance wants us to be meaning offers of £1-2m dont interest as much as £5-6 would.

I can't see restrictions allowing us to change the forwards unless one of them goes, i don't think Cannon entices a bid big enough for us to see it worthwhile selling.

Think Souttar is clearly someone the club is determined to get and money will be allocated as far as it needs to go for that to make it happen but were trying to pay as little as possible by going back with increments.

That will leave another CB in on loan, Gus replacement on loan (high wages, needs to have an X factor) and another squad player on loan.

Wouldn't surprise me if McGuinness ends up going on loan late in the window just to shift him off the wages for a season if he's not fancied and no one is willing to buy him.

If the left winger on loan ends up being someone with intent like Mehmeti / Jack Clarke / Esse i fancy us top half finish and a flirt with 8th.

If its more Brereton Diaz i'll reserve expectations.

Were still crying out for constant availability, power and fitness in centre midfield and this could be our achilles. ideally a defensive minded player to partner arblaster week in week out is where i would want to be.

Assuming we can land Souttar, Jack Clarke on loan ,with an option would be brilliant for us, imo, can do left wing midfield etc and scores goals

Going against all other noise, I would be astounded if Clarke is free and Ipswich don't plan to use him regularly in the Prem.

If it was me, I'd be using the Hamer money to get Souttar in as a top priority. All the panicking every time a ball comes into the box will automatically end. Even against Mansfield, it looked shaky from corners and long throws. At least we'll be solid at the back while we sort out the "top of the pitch" so to speak.

While losing Gus is a blow, it also means that the rest of the midfield can be empowered to do something for themselves rather than the usual "win the ball and hope Gus sticks it in the top corner" tactic that we've resorted to over the last 3 years. Rothwell, Arblaster, Peck, Riedewald and O'Hare are all very decent players in this league while also proving that we could get results last season when Hamer was out of the team and play well doing it.

Hamer is very good but isn't the be all and end all.

Outside of Souttar, we need some reliable attacking players who offer a genuine goal threat, someone besides Bamford who can hit double figures because Cannon is more like a peashooter and Campbell's gone right off the boil over the last year. Is One that guy? Is Wilder willing to gamble on him?

Better loans than last year's duffers would be a good start.

wilder has missed out once before with mikey johnstone i would like us to go back in for him loads of pace and goes past players clarke and cleary would also be my 2nd and 3rd choices
