I think there might be more changes than people are expecting?
Keep all the first choices but move most or all of the fringe players on.
Everyone who comes in needs to provide genuine competition for a first team place.

Sell or Release:- Freeman, Lafferty, Bryan, Wright, Heneghan, Coutts, Lundstram, Carruthers, Holmes, Thomas, Clarke, Evans, Washington, Lavery (14)

Returned Loanees:- Johnson, Dowell, Madine, Hogan (4)

I agree with most of the above and am largely where you're at in your thinking.

The three I'd consider, given that they're already ours and won't command a huge wage but could prove useful are Coutts, Freeman and I'd also want to have another look at Heneghan - a tall, athletic, ball playing centre half. Young, may be an asset.

Lundstram staying, I think if Coutts goes it'll be at the last minute or in January, think Wilder will give him preseason to try and get him back to where he was.

Bryan will be here but might be loaned out.

Otherwise agree. Think a couple of loanees will be back, Henderson on loan, and I've a feeling we'll try and get Dowell on a permanent (Jagielka was talking about Everton on TV after their last game and he said a big thing in summer is to trim the squad down, might include fringers like Dowell)

The only thing with Coutts is whether he wants to stay. I’m sure he would but he deserves to move to a club who will build a team around him and have him as heir kingpin like he was for us.

He’s a great player and to have someone as good as him as a backup is great for us. I just wonder whether he might be thinking about moving on himself.

Better central defenders are probably more urgent than wing-backs. Unless we'd get money for Freeman, he's probably good enough for cover and we have others who could play there. Blowing a large chunk of the budget on signing on fees for back-up players is unnecessary when we already have players under contract. New signings should ideally be starters, with existing players filling out the squad. I don't see why we'd need 5 strikers either, maybe sign a David Brooks/Matt Phillips type player who can play wide, in the hole or up top. If Madine or Hogan were ours we'd probably keep them, but since they aren't we should probably try and get better.

We won't be signing 12 players.

We don't need to sign 12 players.

Well we have to name a 25 man squad.
On another thread you've all listed the players you think we shouldn't keep, which would leave us with about 15 players.
How many players do you think we should sign and who else would make up the 25 players?

Well we have to name a 25 man squad.
If that's the case I would get rid of fewer players, maybe 7 or 8.

I have no problem with signing 12 players but I fear such a change would disrupt the squad a bit too much.

You would also have to question whether signing that many would mean a compromise on quality.

Which of these 14 would you keep then for the Premiership campaign?

I wouldn't keep any of them but unfortunately it looks like we're going to have to keep some just to meet the 25 limit.

Unless we get some crazy investment in which case yes, get them all out.

So we’re keeping Freeman, Bryan and Lundstram.
Cranie out who I thought would be staying.
That’s 12 out and 15 retained leaving us needing to sign another 10 players for our 25 man squad.

So where are we now

GK
Moore, Eastwood. Need at least 1 maybe 2

CB
Basham, O’Connell, Egan, Stearman, Bryan. Need 2 (lcb and rcb cover/competition)

WB
Stevens Baldock Freeman. Need 2 (or one that can play both sides)

CM
Fleck, Norwood, Lundstram. Need 2

AM
Duffy (didsy part time). Need 1

FW
Sharp, McGoldrick. Need 2 (preferably 3)

So 9 to 12 signings needed.

Squad of 25 also means one misses out and can only play cup games.

Can only have 2 loan players from premier league clubs.

McCabe says the budget will be healthy, Bettis says we’re getting a fuck ton of cash from a new sponsor, Wilder says we’ll break our record a few times.

It’s gonna be an interesting few months

Great interview, bettis and wilder are under no illusions as to the size of the task ahead , they know exactly what we need and seem confident of getting em.

So we’re keeping Freeman, Bryan and Lundstram.
Cranie out who I thought would be staying.

Think it will be more than 10 signings as I think the likes of Bryan will be on loan

I honestly don't think Moore or Eastwood are good enough for the prem.
Hopefully we get Henderson back, but I think we need a better keeper as back up.
Bash isn't getting any younger eather, and although I think he's brilliant, I could see him slowly fiddling out over next season, but I hope I'm wrong!, so we need someone in now Cranie has gone.
Both wing backs need cover as does Duffy, back up for the mids, and some strikers.
So all in all, were looking for another team.

Can't wait to see who arrives.

The budget must be bigger than I imagined (30m) if we get Henderson back (loan), we'll still need to sign 6 players even if we run with only 22 genuine first teamers. 6 top Championship players, even if we get a couple in who our released which I can't imagine given the recruitment policy, we've got to be looking at 8 figure fees.

6 top championship players will cost 8-12m each?

Players like Assombalonga were purchased for 14m Mepham 12m Brooks 12m etc.

This is what was scary as I thought the same as you maybe 40/50m allows us to bring in top championship players. But in reality it’s probably 3.

For me, this is the situation and what CW will be looking at for next season:

Goalkeepers
New GK
New GK
Simon Moore

Centre Defenders
New RCB
Chris Basham
John Egan
Richard Stearman
Jack O'Connell
New LCB

Wing Backs/Wide Defenders
George Baldock
New RWB
Enda Stevens
New LWB

Midfielders
Oli Norwood
John Fleck
John Lundstram
New CM
New CM

Attacking Midfielders/No 10
Mark Duffy
New ACM

Strikers/Wide Forwards
Billy Sharp
David McGoldrick
New CF
New CF
New CF

Not in 25 named squad (loans or permanent moves to come)
Eastwood, Freeman, Bryan, Wright, Heneghan, Carruthers, Holmes, Thomas, Clarke, Evans.

Therefore i could see us signing up to 12 new players (maybe less if Freeman and Bryan get a squad number). Either way we are definately looking at 10 plus this pre season. That's a lot of new blood to integrate into the squad in one go....

Whilst some of the recruits will cost a chunk of money (mostly the new forwards) we can still look.to get decent players in throughout the rest of the squad without it costing an arm and a leg. For example, if Hendo comes in on a loan, and we go and get Marshall in from Hull whos out of contract, we have sorted thr keepers out without a transfer fee being paid (yes i know there are signing on fees, loan fees, etc and there isnt such a thing as a free transfer) but the point still stands.

If we are canny in the market we can pay relatively decent wages now and attract the better players from the championship without it costing a fortune. They dont all have to be costing us north of £5m.

Dowell is another one id try and pick up.on the cheap. I think CW will enjoy the challenge of remoulding us and freshening us up.

No doubt about that at all. I was more making the point the finances in the premier league are crazy. 30m not so many years ago would build you a squad now it’s 3 championship players. It’s crazy.

New signings in bold in their primary positions. Players included in all positions they can play.

GK: Henderson/Sluga/Eastwood

RWB: James/Baldock/Freeman - RCB: Basham/James/Egan - CB: Egan/Cooper/Stearman - LCB: O'Connell/Cooper/Stevens - LWB: Stevens/Bell

RCM: Fer/Norwood/James/Sawyers/Lundstram - LCM: Fleck/Fer/Sawyers/Norwood/Lundstram

AM: Freeman/Duffy/Sawyers/McGoldrick/Robinson/Roofe

CF: McBurnie/McGoldrick - CF: Sharp/Roofe/Robinson

That would be a very reasonable squad to assemble for about £40m.

If our manager runs true to form half the new signings will be " Who * ?
and given many of the names mentioned that'll do for me!
Question to everybody though: 25 man squad how do teams work it, do they name 22 and leave a couple of slots free for January signings or can you move names in and out?

Plus Dowell, Madine and Hogan in Jan

That seemed to go Ok

Who is Bell?
His name doesn’t ring one for me

Reading the first few suggestions I just started to laugh and zoned out.
