Speed's Assistant?

Brilliant...

I'd rather a new assistant come in with Ellis dropping down to coach, or preferably leaving!

Speed's first mistake and he's only been in the job 2 minutes!

McDermott at Hudds and Poyet with Wise show the benfits of having a good assistant manager.

Look forward to big Sam's legendary post-match interviews whenever Gazza's busy.
Beginning to look more and more like a panic measure with the added side benefit of cutting costs.

On what basis do you think it is a mistake ?...GS must trust his judgement and advice. What do you think is the definition of a good AM ?

Brilliant. Press conference only ended seconds ago and you're already being negative. Speed out!!!! Thought I'd get in before you.

I can see why Speedo could have done this.

Much as I dislike Ellis because of his pig connections, he is an old warhorse that Speedo probably sees as an ally - none of us really know what went on behind closed doors and it may be that Ellis could well have been a calming influence in the dressing room and it's the kind of support that Speedo will need in the early years of his managerial career.

Ellis won't be coach and that to me is the important thing - Speedo is getting his own man in it would appear.

I'm prepared, as we all should be, to give the new team a chance to knuckle down and get on with it.

I think the role of AM depends on the manager. Apparently some successful managers (Souness?/Dalglish/George Graham?) never take training etc and the AM does all that & much more. Other times you here that the AM is more 'matey' with the players and forms a bridge between the players and the manager.

I'm surprised that an (albeit experienced) AM is being retained from the old guard when a new broom is needed (IMHO).

I also think its surprising given that the current incumbent is unpopular with the fans, divides opinion within the game and has connections with our main local rivals.

Perhaps the main consideration is can the manager work with him and GS obviously thinks so... Or is he waiting for someone to leave a role at another club first???

Seems to be held in high regard within the game from reports I've read. You've still not said why you think this is a mistake by GS.

Some in football like Ellis (ternent/Blackwell) some don't (Warnock), although I don't think I would trust any of them.
Seriously I think GS could have done better or with someone who had a better track record (Sbragia say?). Having said that I don't know if we can afford a good appointment.

I personally think the press conferences Ellis has done have been pathetic and I hope he is better (more honest) behind the scenes.

Mentions of john carver in the sheffield star this evening.he`s currently at mighty plymouth holding peter reids tail for him.

Got to be experienced in my opinion to compliment G.S.

Sounds like he's wanting him in place in next couple of days.
