According to the BBC Gary Speed may have played his last game! :(

Gary Speed may have played his final game after Sheffield United revealed he needs a back operation that could keep him out for the rest of the season.

The Welsh midfielder, 39, won the old First Division title with Leeds in 1992 and scored in every Premier League season until he dropped a division.

They've also officially let on that Del Boy is out for the rest of the season like I've been saying :)

Speed is apparantly on his way to Swindon to become their new manager; there was some comment on the OS about Blackie hoping Speed would hang around to learn a few things from Sam Ellis and himself.

Without meaning to sound too harsh, a player that has worked under the likes of Howard Wilkinson, Howard Kendall, Mark Hughes, Bobby Robson, Sam Allerdyce and Joe Royal would, in my opinion, have very little to learn from our current management team.

It could be argued that the inverse is in fact true!

If Speed has played his last game i wish him all the very best for the future, he has been a model professional and an exceptional player throughout his career.

.

I think we've priced Swindon out of approaching us for him, according to reports, so McCabe/Blackwell must think he's got a big role to play for us.

Do you think they are considering taking him on as an extra first team coach??? Or possibly a youth team coach or would that be below him?

I personally think that Speed has many of the qualities that are required to be a successful manager and i fully expect him to jump straight in as a manager rather then working as a coach.

Obviously there is no gaurentee that he will be successful but i think he has the kind of profile that will see league 1/2 club come in for him...maybe even a low level championship club.

I wouldn't be surprised if Leeds have a look at him.

Speed says career is not over yet

Sheffield United midfielder Gary Speed says claims his playing career may be over are "premature and disrespectful".

The former Wales captain, 39, needs a back operation that could keep him out for the rest of the season.

He said: "I might have the operation and might not be able to continue, but that's up to me to say and decide."

Speed won the old First Division title with Leeds in 1992 and scored in every Premier League season until he dropped a division.

The midfielder injured his back in the 3-1 defeat to Wolves last month and has a disc pressing on the nerve leaving a numb feeling in his right leg.

He is due to have an operation and has set himself a target to get back on to the pitch before the season is finished.

"I would like to get back playing," he told BBC Radio Wales. "In my own mind, I have pencilled in March.

"I've read in the papers and seen on the TV that my career is over and that's a bit unfair. I haven't been too pleased with that because it certainly isn't the case."

He added: "I want to contribute to Sheffield United this season and if I can do that come the latter end, then that's great.

"All I am thinking about is getting this back right and continue playing."

United boss Kevin Blackwell said the midfielder could take up a management or coaching role with another club.

Blackwell said: "I am getting used to being without him as a player."

Speed, who has won 86 caps for his country, started his career with Leeds in 1988 and moved to Everton for £3.5m in 1996.

Two years later he joined Newcastle for £5.5m and he then signed for Bolton in the summer of 2004.

Four seasons followed at the Reebok before he joined Sheffield United in last season's January transfer window.

Looks like his career may not be over then.

I agree..............and the Blades should grab hold of him !

That would add up with the rumours of Gary Mac being dumped at the end of the season.

Hahahaha they dumped him already. Who'd really want the job at L**ds.
