Souttar

In fairness, the two performances prior to the international break weren't great from him, so it's 4 poor games. Shame, given how well he started & when he's switched on fully - rock solid. Maybe missing what 1 game, might be good for him.
Not sure having relatively small pairing of Gilchrist and Robbo against the WBA giants will be good for my heart though!

Before the international break?
He was MOTM against Wednesday. He put in a colossal performance.
He was fine against Bristol & Blackburn too.

He has looked a little leggy since the break, a couple of uncharacteristic errors at Coventry and another big one tonight.
Hopefully the break does him some good. He should be allowed to rest up for a few days and recover.

As already stated he only made 16 appearances last season not all of them starters. The travelling and 3 games in a week seem to have caught up with him. He missed Anels pace and covering tonight maybe that is why he pulled the player back as he didn't trust what was behind him to stop the run through. It was unnecessary but we had been exposed by their pace for around 25 minutes leading to a penalty and maybe that was in his thinking. We'll miss him for WBA.

Think his missteps since the International Break have all been down to fatigue and him being just a touch off the pace.

Got enough credit in the bank for me to not be too concerned about an apparent dip in form.

Be interesting how we set up for the Baggies. Souza is our only fit, tall, outfield player. Be like the Clough years again.

Good to see Souttar taking a well earned break at last! Might have picked another game to do it though.

Beat WBA with a weaker side, and get a few players back for Millwall away.

Not ideal they come at once but these suspensions could be a blessing long term.

We’ve been forced to rotate up front. We have rotated at fullback and now Pack has come in fresh in midfield and others are sharing minutes.

Centre back are the two that played a lot consecutively. Hopefully they rest well.

If Gilchrist moves over then it gives the added bonus that he’s quick and adds to the attack.

Though I wasn’t in favour of switching to 5 against Leeds, especially with Gilchrist at RWB, I wonder if he will consider 3-5-2 for West Brom? Gilchrist, Robbo and Norrington-Davies and then giving licence to Seriki and Burrows/McCallum? You’ve got Souza and Peck and then you could have Hamer or O’Hare (probably the former) and then Rak-Sayki off Campbell.

I wonder if he might prefer this than just going with Robbo and Gilchrist at centre back. Maybe having Norrington-Davies in there adds more value than O’Hare if you have your two first pick centre backs out.

Either way, playing and winning on a Friday has worked in our favour now. All weekend off, then the bonus of not playing midweek or Saturday as additional prep or recovery days.

We were chatting about Souttar last night.

He looks fantastic dealing with crosses and long balls.......which is the style of play used by 80% of Championship teams.
Therefore at Championship level....he's easily one of the best central defenders in the league,

However last night Sunderland attacked more centrally using pace and short quick passes.
Notice how Souttar looked uncomfortable? This is a style of play used by 90% of Premier league teams.

So we did wonder whether Souttar is just not suited to play in the Premier league, hence why Leicester don't want him.

Excellent observation something we talked about at half time - very similar performance from him at Coventry

The defence seemed to hold a high line and they were making fast breaks, and as we were losing the ball frequently on the edge of their area we were caught too far up,Souttar hasn't the pace to be defending just inside their half and got caught out.

Pretty much what I was suggesting at the game last night.

I think it makes sense to go to a back 5. If nothing else we're going to be struggling in the air against a big side. An extra 6ft will be beneficial.

There's got to be a case for resting him for the first game after the next international break, which is Coventry end of March. In hindsight we should have done it last time and gone with Anel and Robbo, always easy though in hindsight.

Those specific attributes never held Harry McGuire back ;)

Genuine question, how does Harry perform for Australia? Same level as Utd or is their formation different?

He's just looked a bit off it last couple of games and despite a daft sending off yesterday, in the bigger picture there was no real harm done. We won the game, Gilchrist looked better at centre half than at full back and Souttar gets a chance of some rest and a recharge of his batteries.I

Big test at West Brom now, interesting to see how he shuffles the pack but with Seriki looking good, slotting Gilchrist in at centre half should work. Lack of height is the main concern but that's an issue Wilder gets paid to resolve so let's wait and see.

UTBFTP 👊👊👊

I think if I could be bothered and tried really really reeeeally hard I could try and claim the second yellow was a tad harsh but I thought it was an outright second yellow and the right decision. Agree with others opinions though, he has certainly looked a tad leggy of late and perhaps the short quick style that's being adopted my lower league teams like us and others is putting him out a bit. Needs to sharpen up a little.

Still an amazing signing though, one of my favourites to wear the shirt.

I think he is knacked . Long haul travelling really takes it toll ' I have done a few of them and it is a really ball breaker . In a way him having a forced break could do him good .

He looked fucked after there equaliser. He isn’t firing on all cylinders for sure. Somehow needs to be rested for the Oxford game. Just don’t know how!
In retrospect we might have rested him from Oxford and played the defence which finished v Mackems

It won't but RND is no taller so we are now stuck with our 3 x 6'0" guys so there's no one bigger available -
This was always a bit of a risk when your best two are 6'7" & 6'5"

They've only scored 3 goals in their last 6 matches, averaging 1 goal per 180 minutes.

In fact they have scored the least amount of goals of any team in the top 11.

Fuck me if we go to a back 5 because we're scared of them will show an unprecedented level of cowardness.. worse than at Leeds.

Agree....think the Souttar - Anel partnership works well because Souttar can lead and Anel is there to mop up and does have decent pace.

Think Souttar and Robbo are too similar....both excellent at Championship level but neither can handle pace.
