Souttar

Surely we can't afford him? They'll likely want near £10 million (they paid £15 millions) and if they go down I assume they'll want to play him.

If we go up, we could afford him, but I'd question how he'd cope in the Premier League. I think he'd be found out for pace. He's a top Championship CB, no doubt.

And I'm guessing he's on a bigger wage than we'd be prepared to pay.

I'm sure we'd pay £10m for him and I would expect that the new owners would love to make a statement of intent this Jan window.

By making HS a permanent signing, it should give the other players confindence and show that the club is serious and ambitious for the short term at least.

Can see what you're saying but I don't think his lack of pace would be much of a problem for us.

He reads the game really well and spots danger early. Not to mention we'd probably be playing deep most of the time so there wouldn't be as much space in behind.

The image I've got in my head is Harry Maguire for Leicester Vs Harry maguire for Manchester United. He only started getting questioned when he was asked to defend on the half way line.

Souttar and Ahmedhodzic are a superb pairing. Souttar's height, strength and reading of the game combined with Ahmedhozic's pace, tackling and aggression are a big reason why we have only conceded 5 goals in 13 games with them both on the pitch.

Presumably we've already got an agreement to loan him until summer? It would seem like a waste of money, given we could just buy him in the summer if we were in a position to?

Given how long this takeover is taking, I'm far from convinced we'll have money to burn! Better off spending 10 million on a striker!

We could ask for a change to the terms of the loan so that we would have first dibs on him in the summer.... effectively a purchase! 👍

This is surely all tied up and to be announced very soon given the 'coming out' of the new ownership.

I would rather first signing Jan

That makes zero sense, the loan deal with Leicester means we’ve got him for the full season.

Souttar will be on big money that any Championship club can’t afford. Obviously he’s not going to accept a pay cut to join us when he stay at Leicester.

Leicester don’t think he’s Premier league standard but will still want 5 to 10 million, this is a figure a normal Championship club can’t afford unless we sell players.

Common sense and logic suggests we wait until the Summer to see what division we’re in. If we’re promoted I expect us to match his current wage and extend it. Also expect us to easily afford the transfer fee.

If we fail to be promoted our parachute payments drop and we’ll need to make cuts, so due to FFP think we’ll really struggle to afford Souttar next season.

I wouldn’t see it as a statement of intent.

I’d be worried that we have idiot owners who don’t know what they are doing. Another Chansiri type who gambles spending/ wasting money when it’s not needed.

We’re in a precarious position. Next season we could be rich or poor. We’ve got Souttar for the full season so no urgency to financially commit. I’d rather buy a striker for this season and regards Souttars future wait until the Summer.

Agree, they are both unbelievably good at defending corners and crosses.
It's the first time in years, maybe decades, that when the opposition get a corner, there's no worries
because we have 6 ft 5 Moore, 6 ft 5 Ahmedhodzic and an incredible 6 ft 7 Souttar. The opposition strikers don't stand a chance.

As mentioned earlier think Souttar is particularly suited to the Championship because so many teams rely on scoring goals from corners and crosses.

Whereas in the Premier league teams use a different style with more movement and little, one touch through balls.
So the theory that Souttar might struggle more at Premier league might have foundation.

My concern is that if Leicester are relegated, then they might change their minds and prefer to keep him and push his transfer value up to nearer £20 million. So I'm hoping LC stay up and we're promoted, then I'm pretty confident we'll sign him for around £10 million.

Souttar has joined the Socceroos camp but I haven't seen him in any of the videos or pictures from the subsequent gym or grass work. Australian sports science is world class, so hopefully they are managing him well and he's in a recovery phase. Would like to see him on the bench for the game on Thursday, but given it's a WCQ, I doubt it.

Whilst he's used to the travel, he certainly isn't used to playing every minute of every game for club and country over a championship season.

Last time he played more than 20 club games in a season was 20/21 (38 games)

Fingers crossed his body can last the distance

They're training at lakeside stadium in Albert Park. I walk my dog around it twice a day so I'll keep an eye out for Harry. Might wear my blades shirt 😊

I genuinely think he's unsuited for the Premier League. I don't think he has quick enough feet. I think he'd be clumsy against world class strikers. Obviously doesn't have the pace needed to make up for it. He'd have to play in a 3 or next to an incredibly pacey and good defender in a 4.

Do get your point but I think the thing that has impressed me most is how calm and collected he is when the ball isn't up in the air.

I think in reality, there's not many better players we could afford who would let us at least scrap it in the PL.
A fair point on your first sentence, but just think of the amount of soft goals we conceded last season due to not having a dominant centre half in the defence.

I think we are both in agreement that he would be an asset to us if we could have him. In reality. If we do get promoted, who could we afford who would be better!! I can't think of any...

I love the guy. Did the grunters do any prep for the game at all, I wonder?

Lumping endless balls into an area where Souts is most comfortable. I found it bizarre. Even at the rubbish level I played at, if we were up against a giant centre-half, we got the ball on the deck and tried to get around the back of them. They didn't seem to have a plan A or B when going forward.

Get the cheque book out in Jan and get in signed. Love him.
i think they did and thats why smith didnt start they looked more dangerous in first half when they were playing it on the deck add to that the fact smith is nowhere near the class of souttar he could have played 180 minutes and still not got the better of him

That tackle on Smith ( I think?)

Fair play to the pig for shaking that off without any fuss!
I think 99% of times players go rolling in 'agony' is playing it up for the ref to try and get an advantage. Souttar punted that ball plenty far enough to leave no doubt he got it so would be worthless playing up to the ref to be honest.

It's very sad because in general players need to roll about and play up to challenge from a big meanie who went in too hard (ooer) because that's the game now. Anytime you get a player who will either take a strong challenge and shake it off or is willing to go all in and win the ball they're immediately adored by the fans. Shame we can't see it more often.

Of course he is not going to be the best defender in the PL, but will he be the best that we can afford AND who wants to play for us ?

Big Harry has done very well in the top flight without pace and by being an excellent reader of the game.

Another 90 mins done. Given it was a draw, I expect he will also start the next game away v Bahrain on Tuesday. Lad's gonna need a rest soon!
He had a rest last Sunday afternoon 😂
