South stand-brutal architecture

I used to think that brutalist architecture was ugly as fuck but it's grown on me over the years. That idea of the future from the 60's and 70's which ironically looks more like a reminder of the past than anything else. In years to come it'll look like a design classic, much like Park Hill in that respect which is why it was understandably grade 2 listed.

I couldn't think of anything worse than sticking cladding all over the ground and making it look like every other stadium in the country.

Me too. I think as you get older you appreciate more how our architecture reflects time - things that were happening, the way people lived, worked etc. Went to see Corbusiers Unité d'habitation while I was in Marseille for the Euros and it was really interesting, the ideas all based on improving and creating a community way of living, giving ordinary families things that previously only the wealthy had, even en suite bathrooms etc. I think the name Brutalist is a bit of a contradiction really. The concept probably got "brutalised" over time. I love the ideas behind it all, and the modular appeal.

it's a classic example of the late brutal period, other examples are afforded grade ll listing..because of all the cladding etc it's hard to imagine what it originally looked like..

fantastic OP. it is brutal and should be stripped back to concrete shell. let the wind blow down the concourse as it used to.

I've been to Marseille twice myself and seen the extensive social housing projects there and I agree, people now associate these places with crime and destitution, which is sad because their original intention was to take working class people out of the slums and provide a better quality of life.
Same with Park Hill, it's had a terrible reputation in previous years (some of it justified), but that's nothing to do with the design or its intended purpose.

Needs knocking down and a new one building!! Failing that, lots of black glass!!!

I hope you're kidding.

That stand, to me, is absolutely beautiful.

It's as much a part of Sheffield United as Tony Currie, Brian Deane or red and white stripes.

String will be along in 1, 2, 3........
stringjunior if I'm not wrong our old man The String Senior™ whilst working at Husband & Co Struc. Engineers was asked his opinion on the then design of the South Stand. Originally it was designed to have a full steel cantilever frame similar to the piece of crap one up the road. Big Roy said (I'm paraphrasing) ... Bollocks to that it'll just rust, so thereafter the distinctive drop reinforced concrete slabs were conceived to counter the roof weight, minimising the amount of steelwork bla bla bla... Anyway Brutilism love it... With relatives living in the Barbican I guess we know it quite well.... Always been an underrated vernacular.

Some would say that our demise started when we kicked out Yorkshire cricket and built that stand instead.

There was a curse placed upon SUFC when we evicted Yorkshire CCC and given our track record since who could refute it.
We should have an exorcism performed plus someone off Redmires or wherever to do a lucky heather clothes peg ritual.
That`ll sort Longs inadequacies out quick sticks.

Wasn't there some sort of "service" years ago?

We could always get Saint Colin to do it though. I'm sure he will if the money's right, him being a big Blade an all.

I believe there was some token gesture.
What we need is a proper fuck off Wicker Man malarky with a proper burnt offering and definately a latter day Britt Ekland bean flicking.
And yes a big role for Colin.
Oh and Ingrid Pitt in the bath.

Old social club.......Norman and Mary.......mmmmm
Those were the days...m.....m. Signed Ebbrell. I went on hols . Came back . He was finished.....Chuffin Ell............Thats Lucky

Bloody hell. I was there for his debut. Went for a slash , came back and he was finished.

Sringsenior - at the cutting edge of the brutalist movement.
Stringjunior - just had a brutal movement

Remember those grand plans for the failed bid? I actually began to dream!

Christ I'd forgotten about how good it looked, I also remember dreaming, still am,more nightmares now though

You two actually were dreaming if you thought that a successful bid for the WC would have gone anywhere but Hillsborough.

Ya kinda think there are bits of bad luck we seem to suffer.
Steve Finieston?
Dane Whitehouse?

With Finnieston i think it was a tackle frim Phil Thompson that did him.
Remember it being an evening match. Met him once or twice.
Think he lived at Stannington.
Postman now i think.

Finnieston did have a bad injury record at Chelsea. It was a mistake signing him and selling Edwards

Simon Inglis says in his football grounds book that the South Stand had one of the most impressive frontages to any stadium in England (this was in 1996, granted). He liked the fact that the car park gave you the space to admire the stand, and that there was minimal signage.

Now it looks a mess. The adverts plastered all over it are cheap and nasty and the hotel ruins the symmetry. What a shame. (Plus there's a statue of a Wednesday player, manager and supporter in the car park for reasons that escape me, but let's not go there).

That Wednesday player etc,was a fundamental reason we enjoyed our best era since John Harris, and his sad,sad loss a major reason we started on the decline heralding what could yet eclipse the one that took us to Division 4.
