Woodward fan, you seem a nice enough guy. But seem to start a topic just to give yourself someone to talk to and then continually add contentious debate to prolong the conversation.
Remind me of an old R. E. Teacher

What can anyone say about the standard of debate?

This was a good thread until that intervention.

Silent. What should I say?

OK you do not want intelligent debate.

Fair enough. Can we have a separate section for you guys?

Foxy Can I demand to ask your opinion of this thread?

It is a mild example of your forum.

O.K. it's me again.

Sorry Blades fans. I have to say yet again that our Messiah has a blind spot for Louis Reed.

P.O.T.Y for a third time, this time at Chesterfield.. England International at three levels.

We love to sign P.O.T.S' from Southend, Portsmouth and also-rans from other clubs.

Reed is 'one of our own'. Was always going to be P.O.T.S. at Chesterfield. And he was.

Why does he not get a chance?

He's fitter than most. He's stronger than most. He holds possession like Coutts. He has a really good through ball. He creates 'assists'. He's the right sort of person every football clubs need. He's not a 'jack the lad', far from it. Great attitude.

We are letting him go. Just like Coutts and Freeman could have gone two years ago.

Think again Chris. love you to bits, always have, but this is a big mistake.
Technically, Chesterfield didn’t have a POTY for the 2017/18 season - https://www.chesterfield-fc.co.uk/news/2018/april/20180425-player-of-the-year-award-withdrawn/

Besides, Reed’s only way back in is via sentiment. CW doesn’t do sentiment.

Looks like you’re on your own on this assessment Woody.

I live in Chessy and seen a couple of their games. Reedy’s done ok most games but best of a bad lot springs to mind. I seriously doubt that he could do it 2 levels higher even though I’d love him to prove me wrong.

I actually think for the money he will be on... yeah you can, or at least a year with a year option. Especially a player that has been with us for the amount of time he has. Think a contract, another loan but in Lg1 and see how he does.
Isn't that what we've already done.......previously extended his contract, then sent him out on loan?
They've seen how he's done and decided to move him on.
We're not a charity.

I'd put Reed ahead of Regan Slater, so we may as well get rid of him as well, because he's got sfa chance of playing 1st team football for us and we're wasting wages on him. And there's no point in loaning him out to a lower league club, because no matter how well he does, and no matter if he win POTY, he'll still be wank. Better to get rid now. He'll never make it. ;)
Regan Slaters only 18, so we can give him a 3 year contract, then loan him out, to see if he's better / worse / or the same as Reed.
He might win Grimsby's player of the year or something......better than Chesterfields withdrawn award...lol ;-)

We have him on contract for another year.

We sign him up on a 3 year contract on relative peanuts.

We send him on loan with an 'escape clause' for January. He would go to League 1, SPL or Championship if Burton were still there.

Next summer with 150 games under his belt we have a much better player than Evans from Wolves/Wigan when we paid &700k for him.

Better than Stevens.

Better than Leinard £700k

Better than Lundstram £700k?

As good as Coutts before long.and could graduate to Fleck in due course.

Coutts and Fleck have 'graduated' over the years.

Do we need to buy every player?

We don't need to buy every player, but we need to develop ones that are good enough to take us forwards...or at very least keep us where we are.

With your rate of progression for Reed WWF, he will be Messi before he retires......lol

Woody has discovered a football friendly touchstone...

My concern with Reed is that he’s no attribute that makes him outstanding and he has one or two that work against him.

Let’s not get tier down with the POTY stuff.

For Chesterfield’s player of the year, this could also read ‘best of a bad bunch’. It should also be noted that Reed was dropped to the bench at a point in the season. It’s not as if he was head and shoulders above, even if deemed better than the others ultimately.

The other POTY awards were Young player awards. The competition here wasn’t stiff at all at that time.

Louis is very small in stature. This is going to work against him. Yes, i get the Messi arguments but where he plays, in the middle, short players are exceptions - Britton, Kante, Fleck etc. Look at Matic, Dier, Henderson, most are of their build and are all more physically imposing. In the case of Kante, he has the energy levels of two men, Fleck drives and dictates play and turns defence to attack plus has a nasty side if needed.

He will make it in League One, might squeeze into the Championship with an unfancied team but I don’t see more. Whiteman eclipsed him let’s not forget and he was also deemed not good enough for where we are heading.

He’s also got far too much traffic ahead of him as has been mentioned already. For all the jury being out on Leonard, he’s been 3 times POTY in League One. Even that is a far cry from being voted best of the worst.

Nobody knows if he's good enough but surely it's fair to say that based on his previous performances for United we would need to see a huge improvement for him to be anywhere near Lundstram never mind Coutts and Fleck.

I'm sure he'll be afforded the same opportunity as Brooks and if he's good enough then he'll be around the squad. If he isn't then it's time for him to find a permanent move.

He’s had a chance Woody. At first I also thought he’d be making a good player. But there’s been too many false dawns with him. You’ve listed out some attributes there that I think are questionable. I’ve never seen him as being particularly fit and strong for a start. Fitness wise, no different to anyone else, strengthwise I’d say “weaker” than most, due to his height. His passing was the one thing I thought made him stand out as a strong future prospect, but he’s so inconsistent with it. Do you remember the last time he played for us from the start? He was subbed at half time because he really was bad, losing the ball all the time. He even looked frustrated with himself.

I’m glad to hear the lad has done well at Chesterfield. Shouldn’t be hard to shine in a team like that though! But, Woody, we’re moving on mate. If you saw the way Wolves and Fulham’s midfield steamrollered us in the away games last season you’ll know that even our best current midfield falls short of what is required to be the best at this level, never mind the next level.

Reed, Lavery, Donaldson, Hussey, and several more like them, they come here, they make an impression, but ultimately decisions have to be made on whether they are for now and the future.

Mistakes will be made about some players, that’s football. Look at Jamie Vardy! But it’s difficult to know how a player will be in the future. And we aren’t a nursery that can wait until these players eventually come into full bloom.

We need players here who can do it today.

Reed is yesterday’s man. Time to let go mate.

Would he be a better player right now? And thank you and respect BTW.

I think he would be a worse player for going to league 2 for the season, rather than pick up valuable championship experience.

Regardless, its not about what's best for Brooks, it's about what's best for SUFC.

Spring to your mind they may well do. A well taken goal vs. Leeds, a turn & drag back vs. Wednesday, a cross come shot goal vs. Millwall, a goal v. Burton and a shot against the post at home v. someone who currently escapes me is about all he has done, he's not yet played 50 games and yet we're happy to laud him as the 2nd coming of Christ.

Reed is not even 21 yrs of age ffs, has over 100 games under his belt, and yet he's been written off as a footballer capable of playing in the championship. He may not make the grade, but he's worth another 3 yrs of out time to see if that's the case. If we can't do that, we may as well not have a youth set up.

We happily took Stevens at 27 from League Two and he's made the step up.

Firstly, I'm not calling him the second coming: I'm just stating his development was better served being part of the squad in the Championship, rather than being loaned to Chestefield.

Secondly, I didnt mention Reed. I would agree with you that he's worth keeping though: a loan to L1 would seem logical.

But Reed isn’t yesterday’s man and is highly rated by wilder and a few others. I imagine a loan to Barnsley or Doncaster may suit. Obviously we may move on quality rise by the time he comes back again. As I have said in previous threads let’s see what contracts Long and Reed get or don’t before writing them off.

Fulwood. respect as always.

Do you seriously think Evans, Lundstram, Stevens, Baldock, Carruthers, Thomas, Hussey, Holmes as yet, Leonard as yet, are all better than Reed who is 21 years old and so much ahead of him?

The football club will be there when the manager and these player above have long gone by the time Reed retires in another 15 years.

2 more years investment and we have a winner.
fuck me.

Take away the fact he used to play for us, player of the season for a team relegated from league 2 is not where we should be looking.

Should we look at Barnets player of the season too?
without looking, John Akinde? I'm sure people have mentioned that we should sign him anyways! (at least from before the start of the 17/18 season)

Is this thread serious or a piss take ? I'm not sure anymore. Louis Reed ............................
