With respect. which is mostly what we would all wish for, he's not good enough, never was. His brother was a few years ago though.@Fraggie

I knew he was never good enough, but it didn't stop a lot of people clamouring for us to play him and eventually renew his contract.
I just don't think Reed is good enough for us and the clamour to keep him / give him another chance seems to me really similar to Mcfadzean before he left.

Big point that Fulwood.

Exactly what is wrong with English football.

Short termism. If Wilder had security in his contract for 4/6/8 10 years he would be serving the club, the players and the fans differently.

As it is, I think Wilder is a long term thinker but it has its parameters.

I know you’re keen on this long term contract but it means bugger all other than that we’ll pay a bomb to get rid if he has a bad spell of 20 games and the shoes are off.

Similarly from Wilder he could turn around in 2 years pissed off with how it’s all gone investment wise and manufacture a move away. We haven’t got the spine to demand a fee for him.

2 or at a push 3 year rolling contracts are good and that seems to be the current approach.

Quality post if I may say so.

Hey Blades. This thread is a debate without 'sharks' or the like.

Respect your fellow posters rather than play for laughs.

Show S6 what we are. United!!

Treat infants like infants. My 11 year old grandson talks 'senior school' now, why don't you morons converse responsibly?. You'll learn far more for sure and get your views across more easily.

Chali. Tell me why? Without cartoons maybe. Talk to me with reason.

Fair enough.

I think Brooks has developed fantastically well this season, in the championship.

I think he had an impressive season and is poised to make an impact next year, when he is fully recovered and fit after his illness.

There have been games where he's had a big impact, Leeds and Wednesday away spring to mind. Would we have won those games without him? Would we have enjoyed the season as much without those wins?

I'm sure he would have excelled in league 2, the same way I would excel in an under 7s league. Based on his impact at championship level, it would have been beneath him IMO.

Derek.

Only entreprenaurs who differentiate themselves succeed big.

What I look at is what we look like without Wilder, starting again, changing the squad, learning about new players, mixing the group.

Personally I am not 'up for that' yet again. If I was 21 years old I'd give it time.English football is all over the place. We need a Brian Clough. Wilder is our only hope.

The next chance is a Robson, Blackwell, Speed, Adams, Wilson, Adkins No thanks.

Would he be a better player right now? And thank you and respect BTW.

England International at three levels.
I suspect the amateur leagues are littered with those CV’s.

If he’s as good as you suspect, someone else from the higher echelons will spot it.

My guess is that he’ll make league one at the very best.

I think Brooks benefitted far more from facing championship players, barring his unlucky illness he might have become a regular in our side.
League 2 was probably far too easy for him......might have toughened him up a bit, but don't think it would have sharpened him up as much as playing against better players.

Question is this...is he better than Coutts,Fleck,Evans or Lundstram...answer is clearly no. Unfortunately for him central midfield is our strongest position and plus those 4 Wilder brought in Leonard (3 x in a row player of season at Southend) so that's at least 5 ahead of him in the pecking order.

We.cant afford too big a squad and it's the right decision to let him go.

He can be a Clough though without having a contract that screws us over if it goes wrong.

I’ll happily play on the fact that he’s a Blade as it should give us more loyalty from him that if he supported anyone else. If he keeps performing he gets new contracts, 2 in 2 years isn’t bad, so why would he sign a long term one unless it had silly % increase clauses in it? He’d be worse off.

League 1 for a 21 year old is fine. He has 14 years after this season.

What about SPL. He would absolutely define himself as a quality player with loads of media attention.

Get a massive 'sell-on- clause' United.

That's a valid view.

Not at all sure Wilder was that comfortable with it just a week ago!

Spring to your mind they may well do. A well taken goal vs. Leeds, a turn & drag back vs. Wednesday, a cross come shot goal vs. Millwall, a goal v. Burton and a shot against the post at home v. someone who currently escapes me is about all he has done, he's not yet played 50 games and yet we're happy to laud him as the 2nd coming of Christ.

Reed is not even 21 yrs of age ffs, has over 100 games under his belt, and yet he's been written off as a footballer capable of playing in the championship. He may not make the grade, but he's worth another 3 yrs of out time to see if that's the case. If we can't do that, we may as well not have a youth set up.

We happily took Stevens at 27 from League Two and he's made the step up.

I don’t see it myself, and it seems nobody from within the club (with a more expert, close view) can see it either.

Of course, experts sometimes get it wrong too, especially in football.

No dis-respect intended at all, but when did you last see the lad play? When did you last see his physique?

you can't keep giving away 3 year contracts hoping someone may come good.
I agree Brooks has been over hyped in some quarters and is yet to prove himself at championship level consistently, but in his short time on the pitch he's shown more potential than Reed has.

We have him on contract for another year.

We sign him up on a 3 year contract on relative peanuts.

We send him on loan with an 'escape clause' for January. He would go to League 1, SPL or Championship if Burton were still there.

Next summer with 150 games under his belt we have a much better player than Evans from Wolves/Wigan when we paid &700k for him.

Better than Stevens.

Better than Leinard £700k

Better than Lundstram £700k?

As good as Coutts before long.and could graduate to Fleck in due course.

Coutts and Fleck have 'graduated' over the years.

Do we need to buy every player?

Didn't spend my time watching Chesterfield last season so I don't feel that I could offer an opinion. However, I assume that a club of our calibre did have LR watched and appraised throughout and a responsible person decided his fate. Another matter may weigh in the balance though. Can we get a fee for LR? If we can then this may be part of a CW wheel and deal to get a bit of cash in for somebody he does need rather than another midfielder.

Reed's already a winner. The percentage of players making it through academies to become pro's is that small, he's done well so far and i'm sure he can hold down a position in a LG 1 or 2 side. But I personally think that is it.

Not for a while, unlike all those within the club that seem to share my view.

Big point alco.

Wilder has the interests of the club at heart.

I disagree with him.

Any team needs its introverts and extroverts, it's 'stars' and its 'watercarriers'.

Reed does both roles for me but hey ho...

Who were top performers at clubs a division and a half higher than Chesterfield.

Wilder’s transfer dealings have been the best we’ve had for over a decade. He can’t see anything worth keeping in Reed, and I’m happy to trust his judgement.

Just the one league's difference between One & Two. Reed didn't disgrace himself when he played in League One nor did he look out of his depth vs. Spurs in the cup over 2 legs, admittedly 3 seasons ago. Leonard has yet to do anything whatsoever as a midfielder that assures me he isn't wasted money, and yet he's now being proclaimed as a championship level centre back. The less said about Holmes the better.
