We've Had A Great Season No Matter What Happens Play Offs Is A Great Achievement
Take yourself back to the start of the season and imagine being told we'll finish above:
West Brom
Stoke
Middlesbrough
Villa
Forest
Derby
Swansea
We'll have to hope it does go to the wire, because if it doesn't it will mean we've fallen out of the race
Plus, Wilder will want a longer holiday.
Hey, fingers crossed. Wouldn’t like too easy a ride would we?We'll finish 3rd.
I'm absolutely sure of it.
Rocking? Haven’t they won six on the bounce?
The play-offs are bollocks, lets all be honest about it.
Noone likes them - not even the people that aren't in them. Totally unfair that after a 46-game season where you can be far and away the 3rd best team in the league that you have to go through the rigmarole.
At the very least, there should be some advantages in the play-offs for finishing higher. Personally, i'd say:
Game 1: 5th v 6th (home advantage for 5th)
Game 2: 4th v Winner Game 1 (home advantage for 4th)
Game 3: 3rd v Winner Game 2 (home advantage for 3rd)
They'd never implement this, and even if they did the last game would have to be at Wembley to pay off the debt, but if you must say that a full 46 game season isn't enough to give 3rd place promotion when they've proven themselves better / more consistent over a prolonged period, then they should at least be handed a significant advantage.
Before the play-offs, you could finish 3rd in the league and that was it. End of your season. You might as well have finished third from bottom. You were going nowhere. End of. Kaput. Finito. You'd prefer that then would you, rather than have a chance at promotion?
For some clubs the season finished early - because the top 2 were un-catchable by Feb or March. So, nothing to play for if not in the top two. I've been to many "end of season games" which have just been a pointless stroll in the park, often with the club fielding players from the reserve side to give them experience. Because we were neither going up or going down.
The play-offs have changed all that. They keep the season alive for MOST teams in the division, right up until the end. At the present time, any of the top 10 could go up and any of the bottom 8 could go down. That's 18 teams out of 24 whose season is still very much alive, with everything to play for, with just 8 games left. Personally I think it's brilliant and far better than the old system.
Do I enjoy the play-offs? Absolutely I do. I love watching them. I find them so interesting that I try and watch all of them, in each division, no matter who's playing. I think there's nothing better than seeing two teams battling it out knowing that there is so much at stake over the 2 games. It's exciting. Of course it's horrible to watch if you're on the losing side - as us Blades know only too well. But it's great drama.
Is it unfair? Yes, I suppose you could say it is. Especially if you finish higher, buy some considerable points margin, to those below you. But in that case, you should be able to beat them over 2 games shouldn't you? I appreciate that football is also a game of chance - and luck could be against you and it could all blow up in your face. And that's what's happened to us on so many occasions - but that's no reason to curse the system. It's every reason to curse our luck though!
If i'm honest with myself, I can see us just missing out. Mostly based just on too many previous experiences like this, but I can't undo that feeling.
All the Leeds fans I’ve spoken to think they’re done for in relation to top two. They sound just like we usually do.
Means nothing though if they win Saturday and we don’t then they’ll be all but up again you watch!
Much as I might like that I’m afraid Norwich look like there off. Today will be tough for them but after that it looks much more straightforward than for us or youI think that is exactly why most Leeds fans including myself don’t think it’s over. One draw from you guys let’s us back, with it not having to be a loss, whilst your form & defensively is great you won’t play well until the end of the season they’ll be off days. I’m actually happy we’re in 3rd & chasing for the time being as the fans will feel the pressure that it’s yours to lose. One team digging in for a 0-0 against you & Leeds winning at the same time, the pressure will be great on the players, it’s if the can handle that, I honestly couldn’t call it I’d love norwhich to bottle it & is both go up but I don’t know.
Between 1973-74 and 1985-86The top 3 used to go up automatically, not just the top 2.
I appreciate your point of view, but I'm afraid we are just going to have to disagree on this one. I might have more sympathy for this line of reasoning if there was a play-off for the last relegation place (bottom 2 auto, third-bottom through 6th bottom have a play-off, for example, or even just a 2-legger between 22nd and 21st), but we don't. So how is it that the three teams that have been the most dogshit over the course of the season don't get a second chance to stay up, but the team in third that has proven itself the third-best team over those same number of games has to go through a 3-game lottery? Before the play-offs, you could finish 3rd in the league and that was it. End of your season. You might as well have finished third from bottom. You were going nowhere. End of. Kaput. Finito. You'd prefer that then would you, rather than have a chance at promotion?

No they didn’t when I started watching in the 1970’s. It was top 2 up, bottom 2 down. 11 players and 1 sub.The top 3 used to go up automatically, not just the top 2.

So yeah - I disagree wholeheartedly with your thoughts on the play-offs, but they're your views and you're entitled to them.
