Hi All,

First time poster from North Wales here.

Excited for the new season, however slightly concerned at the lack of business up to now in the transfer window.
I dont want to sound like many other posters within the forum, yet we can all see the gaping holes currently within the squad.
It frustrates me hearing Ruben (who, Im excited to see what he brings to us) saying that we're only targeting loans and free agents, yet Hecky's able to bid almost 4 million for Richard Kone, Charlton, who've been in the financial doldrums for years have (when Knibbs signs) the biggest net spend currently in the transfer window.

Barry and Bindon will be excellent additions, yet last season we had 6 loans that needed replacing, id rather have replaced those with 6 permanent signings.

Please forgive my ignorance on financial matters however, I'd have thought we would've been in a position to spend. Im sure Ruben would have liked to bring more players in than this by now...

Not a good start from you. Selles has not said that we're only targeting loans and free agents.

Go back through the last three seasons and see when we signed players.

It’s fine. Calm down. We’re always busier in August

This! Wait until the window closes before judging how good or bad it’s been.

Better players are always going to be harder to sign and take more time to complete.

I think a lot of people are looking at the current set-up negatively.

Under CW, lets be honest. Our best players, were attacking players who were mainly on shackles. I'm looking forward to us going 1-0 up and going for 2-0, 3-0. Yeah we might lose a few 2/3-0 but we'll win more than we lose.

There is no way we will go into the season without reinforcements at RB, CB and CM. Moore leaving may also see us invest in another attacker and hopefully a wide player too.

It's always frustrating waiting for them to come, but it also seems like leaks have been largely plugged since Wilder left. So whilst there are a general lack of rumours, I have no doubt loads will be going on behind the scenes.

We just have to hope we do do the business in August, we know the gaps that need to be plugged/ added too. Especially for this style of play we've seen over Pre-season, you'd have hoped maybe under new stewardship we might have been more forward thinking and proactive in the window, so its a reasonable thread...

Thing is, that was under the prince, I was hoping under the new ownership things may be different?

And yes Selles did say he was targeting loans and free agents after the York match
He did, but not exclusively. If we are in the market to buy then it doesn’t pay to tell the media !

As a fan i hate this cat and mouse nonsense that has to be played to the media, speak to us, the fans, it hardly gets us excited hearing that we're targeting loans and free agents, and there is money to be spent should we feel the need to, i dont understand why we haven't gone out and bought more suitable players for Selles' system.
Especially in defence.
Im sorry for bringing this thread up, but Im raising a concern that I believe is a valid one based on how the transfer window has gone.
Dunne, Kenny, Darling etc were all available on free transfers and that was regardless of Wilder being here or not back in May, club knew we only had Anel and Robbo as the only two senior CB's registered..

The below article is one of a number of places where Selles has been quoted as saying:

"We are able to, if that's what we need,” said Selles, on paying transfer fees. “For the moment right now we are more focused on the market of loans and free agents, and we are monitoring ones where we'd need to pay transfer fees. We can do that but our target right now is loans and the free agent market."

It's pretty apparent that the owners don't want an approach of throwing a load of shit at a wall to see what sticks. They blew a load of money in January on the transfer fee for Cannon, plus wages for him and all the loans, and had nothing to show for it come the end of the season. So a more considered approach is seemingly being taken now where we work much more deliberately to identify players that would bolster the first team squad, and that we want to sign.

It's quite impressive that somehow, despite you being a new poster, you're already spouting the same nonsense as a bunch of pre-existing bedwetting, when it comes to our transfer plans for the summer.

I dont think its nonsense, its called being a passionate fan who wants the best for my club, Im not expecting millions to be thrown around, would just have liked more than two loans who are guaranteed to return to their parent club, signed before the first game of the season...

The best for the club is to spend unsustainable amounts of money we can’t afford to satisfy immature fans football manager urges?

Welcome.

While you are right in that Selles said we were targeting frees and loans at the time (as everyone will do in the EFL), he did also mention that we will have money to spend on transfer fees if we need to spend it, so it's not just targeting frees and loans only.

Transfer window is open for another month yet, and we'll definitely see more business (with us and most other teams) over the next few weeks, so I wouldn't worry too much.

6 loan signings last season doesn't necessarily mean we need 6 permanent signings to replace them, especially as 3 of them were RB's.

Squad we've got right now (with no new arrivals/departures) should be enough to get us in and around the top 6, a few more quality additions should push us into the top 6 and hopefully challenge for top 2.

Moore leaving for Wrexham should suggest that we will be signing another ST to replace him, been linked with Issac Romero and Mcburnie within the last week.

Kone will go for more than £4m, I expect Wycombe will probably get a bidding war going as he's attracting interest from several Championship clubs, expect to see a fee of around £6-7m before he leaves.

Not sure where Charlton are getting this money from, but it looks like their Harvey Knibbs move has collapsed, he won't be at Reading in September.

I wouldn’t panic just yet. Take Morgan Gibbs-White for example, arguably the best player we’ve had in the last 5 years, for one he was a loan and secondly he was signed after the season had started. I’m sure Selles will be well aware of the areas that need strengthening and I’m confident that we won’t be ending the window without having bolstered those areas.

It's weird to have no real opinion on the owners, the transfer window or the manager but that's me.

There's some general points I'd make. We were massively short last summer, patched things up with loans in Jan and are inevitably back to being massively short again at this juncture.

We've signed, what, two senior loans replacing three senior permanent outgoings (assuming Moore leaves)? We're well short of permanents and I believe this must be significantly addressed this window. I think One will step up but apart from that I don't see any fringe youth players bolstering things. Three high earners have left leaving us with few remaining - especially for a recently relegated PL team. FFP shouldn't be a huge issue with the lack of PL spending and the recentish pure profit academy player sales. I think the scope to invest big is there if the owners have the money. It's wait and see time.

I see what you’re saying.

Have you considered contacting Prince William?

🤣

Henderson was a loan.

Gibbs White was a loan.

McAtee was a loan

Diddsy was free

The last few seasons a good chnk of our squad were loans and we've been (relatively) successful.

We have a good squad anyway.

I'm not worried, it's usually like this.

How are we 'massively short'?

That's a ridiculous statement

We need to make some permanent signings though. I agree on that front.

I'll reiterate what I've been saying, Im not looking for us to spend unsustainable money, I'm looking for the owners to show some intent and fill the current and obvious gaps in the squad. We've hardly heard the owners since the take over was completed.
Again, according to their statement, they would like us to be a regular fixture of the premier league. To do that, we're going to havd to speculate to accumulate. We wont do that with loans only.

I get that we've usually done a lot of our business in august previously, but just because we've done that before, why do we have to continue that way?

I dont, for instance want to buy Kone as I think hes way too expensive for half a season in league one. Knibbs on the other hand would be perfect as another 8 in the Rubens' system.
There's been plenty of free agents that haven't even been looked at, and most of the better ones have been picked up.

Except for Oli (who I think isnt that good), can anybody name 3 free agents who we realistically could go for that would strengthen us?

I get what you are saying. Many have spent money and are building decent squads.

I’m sure though by the end of August we will have team more than good enough to challenge for promotion places.

Oh and
Just ignore the clique responses. They do know it all you know.

Brownhill is a very obvious one but I suspect will get Premier League interest.
