Six Memorable Opening Day Matches

Well , strictly speaking , it's an article about 6 MEMORABLE opening matches .

Maybe the fact that there's a couple of defeats thrown in there tells us more about what's memorable for the Stars editorial team than it does us !

They've gone for:
First season back in the top division after a long absence (* 2)
First ever Premiership season and first ever Premiership goal
Season when we got promotion back to The Premiership after a long absence
Amazingly good opening match and performance (arguably the best in the last 40 years)

I really don't see how people can quibble with those five choices.

Last season at Gillingham was most definitely memorable and highly significant in foretelling what was unexpectedly to come.
I really don't see it as some sort of Anti-United propaganda. It simply fits the criteria better than most other seasons.

Reading away was Brian Deanes first game and first goal . Not only was it a resounding win in Harry Bassetts first full season in charge , it was also the season when we were promoted back to the old Second Division at the first attempt . I feel I must also mention that it was also the birth of a strike partnership that we've never got close to replicating ever since ..... Deane and Agana . Started the day with Francis Joseph and Deane upfront , Francis was taken off due to injury and off the subs bench came Agana . The rest is , as they say , history .

The very next season we had a tough assignment away at WBA as an opening fixture. A scorching hot day greeted a big following from the lane who were treated to a brilliant 3- 0 victory . The " zone man " the documentary season and Leicester last match et al followed as back to back promotions were secured .

None of that's a " quibble " it's a truly glorious part of our history .

Champions Derby were awarded a penalty in the 1st half but Jim Brown saved Bruce Rioch's spot kick. In the 2nd half Keith Eddy gave us the lead with a penalty but late in the game Charlie George equalised with a screamer in the Kop End. The New South Stand looked great and I thought we were going to be in the top tier forever!

Which two other matches would you drop if you could only choose six then?
Gillingham presumably and which other?

P.S. I love that early Bassett team as much as anybody.
I'm constantly defending them from the likes of Pinchy who sees that era as "shameful" and "embarrassing".

My first opening day as a committed Blade was the 3-1 defeat at Orient in 1970. I wasnt at the match (watched Chesterfield v Villa). The first Blade opening fixture I attended was that 3-1 win against the Saints in 1971. Woody gave us an early lead with a penalty. Geoff Salmons increased the lead with a header. After half time Brian O'Neill pulled one for the Saints but John Flynn made it 3-1 with a header off a Woody corner. There was a big thunderstorm near the end of the match

Bounced back to Division2, didn't really know what to expect, away at one of the favourites, started Tracey in goal as a surprise, fucked 'em over big time. Went on to gain the most unexpected promotion I've ever seen us get. Totally gobsmacked from The Hawthornes to Filbert Street. Great day indeed.

Gillingham , obviously .

For me the other would be the 3-1 loss to Liverpool in the Old first Division . The memorable games in that year started at Christmas .

The wba game was my most memorable missed it getting married , did have the do at the lane though and welcomed the Wizards back in the evening .
