Sheffield feels like a shithole, don’t know about owt else. But Leicester and Sunderland’s investments are bizarre.

Even Wednesday got a bloke with a serious wad in, fortunately the blokes a rock headed dunce with no idea about football.
 
Theres one big thing counting against United in terms of attracting large outside investment and it’s a lack of potential for easy growth. First we’re a two club city so unless there’s a drastic disparity between the two clubs you’re unlikely to dominate fan share within the city. Second Yorkshire has a heavy density of clubs in a relatively small geographic area. Us, Wednesday, Barnsley, Donny, Huddersfield,Rotherham, Bradford, Leeds that’s a lot of decently sized clubs close together. Third the giants clubs across the Pennines Liverpool and Manchester United are a big issue in terms of attracting new fans from outside Sheffield and in terms of attracting young players.

Sheffield is a rundown Northern city and the main thing going for it is that it's close to the Peak district. It's not even alone in that!

Most footballers want to go to nice restaurants, cinemas, clubs, fancy shops etc and we're hardly blessed. Pretty sure most 20 year old don't give a shit about he countryside.

As you say, proximity to much better cities and clubs does not help.
 
One of the richest men in the world owns part of QPR and how much have they spent. Whether he doesnt want to put money in or cant due to FFP restrictions I dont know.

As Silent says if Bournemouth don't go up they could be up sh1t creek...Solanke, Lerma, Cook, Brooks, Billing, Cahill, Danjuma will all be on very big wages.

Huge wage bill though: 100 million +. What Bournemouth showed with their foray in the prem is that you need that type of wage bill allied to a level of investment that United had. Burnley are an outlier that I don't think can be replicated.

Fulham had the right idea. Huge wage bill but just for that year. Bring a few more players in as well permanently.

Measure of Sheffields pull is we couldn’t even hang on to a John Lewis store in the city centre. One day we will be a case study of how extreme socialist council rule can grind a city into the ground.

I'd never call it a shithole, I love the place. However, everything I love about Sheffield isn't manmade. I love the Peak District, the hills, the greenery all over the city, the parks etc.

But in terms of everything else; bars, restaurants, shops etc. it's miles behind the other major Northern cities - Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, Leeds ...

Unfortunately it's the latter items that make a city attractive to investors and footballers for that matter.

I love it but still think it's a bit of a dump outside the city centre. There's nowhere as bad as Page Hall anywhere outside of London. The whole north side of Sheffield is a clear sign of multiculturalism gone wrong.

There's plenty of decent places to eat in town, but it's mainly curry houses. I think drinking in terms of bars is getting better with that street up the side of the city hall.

But still, something all these better cities have is something indoor in the centre, vibrant, with bars and restaurants and even things like laser quest or bowling alleys. We have nothing of the sort and no plans for it.

That is utter, utter clap trap 56 - an agenda squeezed into a nonsense comment. For starters SCC even subsidized part of the JLP tenancy agreement to get try and get them to stay. Typical that some people - not just on this tread - judge a the success of a city on what shops it has or hasn't got. Its not the only metric.
As for socialist council, ha ha. If only. Did you check what colour pants the ruling parties of the other magnificent Northern cities have been wearing for the best part of the last century!
 
I think we’re hammering on sheffield a little bit too much here. It’s not Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds or York but it does have a burgeoning food scene and there’s some really good entertainment amenities in the city centre in recent years you’ve seen a new mainstream cinema in the light open plus other smaller concerns like Curzon. A lane 7 bowling alley has just opened as well. Sheffield also has two very large well respected universities with all the accompanying amenities that go hand in hand with large student populations. If the proposed Adidas complex is built in the John Lewis building including rooftop pitches then that’ll be another flag ship new entertainment building in the city centre

Every city has its areas of extreme deprivation Sheffield doesn’t compare unfavourably to a Nottingham, Derby or Leicester to my mind. And is certainly much better than plenty of other towns and cities up and down the UK with similar sized clubs

I have always thought that cities like Sheffield could learn a lot from Vienna, a smallish city with a climate similar to the UK, loads to see and do, a lot of it free also with a lot of countryside around it, most of it comes from innovation, vision and a commitment to make life better for the people they serve as a local council - that is why it constantly tops the charts for one of the best places to live in Europe.

There’s certainly a need to reinvent our city centres in general the concept of the high street was dying before but the pandemic has well and truly nailed its coffin shut. Shopping is no longer a draw to attract people into cities so those city centres have to be reimagined and redesigned to accommodate new ways for people to spend their free time
 
The problem with Sheffield is a lack of money and a lack of imagination.

All we seem to do is copy. There are very few things about Sheffield which are actually unique or we were there first. And when we are, they're never fully supported.

New bars, restaurants, pubs are usually either chains or a copy of something else.

We have the same main chain shops in the centre as everywhere else but little innovation or entrepreneurism outside of that. You could go and take a trip round the northern cities and play guessing games about what is coming next.

The buildings Hitler didn't destroy have been systematically replaced with boring identikit versions of Leeds.

We are the home of football but no one has had the whit to build a football museum and it's only now the council have decided to play up on it. We had the best breweries in the UK a few years ago and instead of backing them they just carried on while other places were innovating and supporting. The beer drinkers of Sheffield largely want to drink things from outside of Sheffield. All the fancy beers but little support from breweries and bars for each other.

We create very little and what we do well in we'll either downplay it or rather have a copy of something else.

Vienna is a lovely city but it has attractions. Sheffield has....proximity. It's good that the museums are now all(ish) free but it's very limited. No better than other cities without the unique attractions.
