Signings that you were excited by at the time but disappointed you in the end

I never saw him play but from what I've read, Chris Guthrie would fall nicely into this category.

Probably Alan Warboys too, who arrived with a good goalscoring record.

Howard would be the big one, remember everyone on bladesmad being hyped we had finally got our goalscoring midfielder.

Will throw a controversial one in. Sharp from Scunthorpe. Expected alot of goals from him. Instead he spent alot of time around the corner flag and seemed to be constantly offside. We didn't play to his strengths and sold him despite proving on his loan to Donny that he could score if played right. Fortunately he got another go.

Alan Young and Steve Finnieston.

After those two I stopped getting excited about signings until I'd actually seen them kick a few balls for United.
Alan Young scored a winner in a game v Oxford in 1982(?). Overhead kick so he gets a pass, plus the atmosphere was amazing on the Kop with 12K in the ground.
Steve Finnieston - granted, remember being at the cricket nets on a hot August night seeing we'd signed a bloke I'd heard of, from Chelsea. What could possibly go wrong?

85/86 season, first game of season away at Stoke the old Victoria ground, just finnised work that Saturday dinnertime. Decided to go to the game we won 3-1, I know Withe got 1 possibly two that day.
Twas a bit feisty after the match, walking back to my car
I was in Rhodes, learned of the win by buying the Sunday People on the Monday morning.

How we used to live.

Horsfield, I did an air punch when we signed him I was so pleased, he was lethal for Fulham! I seem to remember we were effectively forced into signing him?
The wonderful Chris Morgan excepted, we don't seem to do very well with ex-Barnsley players. As mentioned, Ashley Ward, Geoff Horsfield and Brian Howard didn't exactly pull up any trees.
I still love Chris Morgan though, no fannyin' abart!! 😍

He might already be hiding in the thread, but Luke Freeman. Always seemed to be the best player on the pitch against us but never quite replicated it, albeit in the PL.

Remember that away day very well , a good few of us set off in the back of a removals van it was fkg boiling .. we got as far as the Parkway before the plod pulled us in 😂 … Jesus if we’d have made it Stoke they’d have been 70 patients in A&E with heat exhaustion !!
There was a hasty arranged coach but we ended up on a bus that stopped at every bus stop & signpost between here & Stoke !! I’ve been to the other side of the world quicker !! .. Eventually got to ground 30 mins into the game .. won 3-1 , reyt atmosphere at the Olld Victoria ground ..no fkg way were we busing it back .. ‘lively’ walk back to mini buses that we’d blagged a return on ,… great days not like all the organised shite nowadays.. different & happy times & met some great lads who are still friends to the day 👍 ⚔️⚔️

Danny Bogdanovic too!
Muck n nettles Morgs made up for all of them 😍

If we had not signed Vinnie Jones we would have been relegated 1990/1991 season.
Well you were a lot closer to it than I was, though that’s not how it looked from the kop. If you’d said the same about Glyn Hodges I’d agree 100 per cent.

Mind you, Jones missed 4 games after we signed him. We won all 4, including the 7-2 v Oldham and 4-1 v Southampton. I always thought this was telling.

Sabella £160K in summer 1978
Signed because the board had agreed to sign a different player for £200,000, but the military junta put the price up by another £150,000. Harry Haslam thought this was too much, and so we didn’t sign the 17 year old Diego Maradona.

Bit weird to see Austen Trusty & Cameron Carter-Vickers forming the CB partnership for Celtic in the Champions League tonight !

I just dunno how Trusty can be a CL player , thought he was useless in PL for us , no strength in him.
Thought he'd be a great LCB to replace Robbo but what went wrong ?
And what did Celtic see or do that we couldn't ?

Always liked CCV though , tough cookie

Yes, Glyn Hodges was the signing that turned our season also Tracey's return from injury before Xmas was a boost. In Vinnie's book he said some things to belittle the club and was full of himself. I cant stand him!
