Paul Shaw. Not sure it was his fault as I think we played him as a lone striker with our then direct approach.

Ian Rush. He was one of the outstanding strikers of his generation, and yet when he played briefly for us he was essentially a human lamppost.

Other (dis)honourable mentions include, but are definitely not limited to, Steve Finnieston, Brian Howard, Steven Hendrie, Samir Carruthers, Danny Cullip, and the latest in a long line of dross, Ivo Grbić.
Bit unfair that - during his time in Sheffield he won seven world titles. ;)

I was excited by Jean Phillipe Javery as a kid cos I thought his name sounded cool, turns out he was shit

To flip reverse 1973Blade 's thread. Who have we signed over the years that never lived up to the hype?

I'll start with a few:
  • Patrick Suffo
  • Leon Britton
  • Ahmed Fahti
  • James Harper
  • Lee Hendrie
Leon Britton was widely regarded as the best ball playing midfielder at the the time

Blackwell signed him and proceeded to lump the ball over his head before he retuned to Swansea

I remember his home debut and the look of bewilderment on his face every time our CB hoofed it up field

I thought Cameron Archer would be an excellent signing for us, particularly after his debut, but he faded badly and ended up on the bench most of the season. Still, he seems to be doing alright at Southampton - we were just a total shambles last season.

Steven Hendrie had an excuse though, he was a snooker player…

Lee Hendrie however was as useful as a fart in a spacesuit…

Mark Morris.

I remember as a young kid being amazed we'd spent 175k on a player.

Not sure who was our record signing before that (was it Colin Hill perhaps at 85k?), but I remember it being big money for us at that time.

Alan Young and Steve Finnieston.

After those two I stopped getting excited about signings until I'd actually seen them kick a few balls for United.
To be fair, both of those suffered with injuries. Young was actually decent when he played and I'll never forget the overhead kick winner he scored against Oxford.
